When I was 12 I almost died in a freak accident (long story) requiring emergency surgery that left me bed-ridden for a week, with 9 months of PT to look forward to. I'd just started skateboarding that year & was told I shouldn't even be thinking about it for awhile (or even quit). I was pretty depressed.
To cheer me up, my mom bought me a Big Brother mag & my first skate video "Label Kills" which'd just came out (2001). I must've watched it 5+ times that day, 30+ times that week. I didn't know any of the skaters & only knew what half the tricks were but my level of excitement was unprecedented. The skating, music, and style of the whole video was something I'd never seen before. I'd never been so S T O K E D watching a video. Those feelings alone made my recovery process speed up. A week or so later I was getting yelled at by my parents for trying to secretly skate in my room. Halfway through PT I was on the streets again.
A decade & a half later I watch this video & still remember & feel the same feelings I felt as a kid. The strange, overwhelming urge to quit moping & go outside & just push a piece of wood on wheels around. It can't be topped. It's so weird & I don't get it & I fucking l love it. This video really made me realize that, & really helped me through that unfortunate slump in my life. I'm not sure if I'd be the same person if my mom had bought me something lame like an Xbox instead.
