GIRL TIME RUSH:
1 / 2 / 3 / espresso* / espresso2 (wip) / i got it bad*
* by @myloveforhergoeson
Kendall was tired.
The dayâs dance rehearsals really took it out of her. She couldnât understand how Roxy could return to Rocque Records for more. Or how Carlota and Logan still had it in them to jump, yell, hootâeven bark, at one pointâright by her ear.
Carlota shoved her side. âRight, Kendall?â
âHm?â
She looked at the tv screen. Then to Loganâs victory dance.
Oh, right. The Flyers scored.
Crib hockey night always energised Kendall. No matter how worn out she was, the spread of snacks, sub-zero temperatures, team merchandise, and the energy her friends brought with them never failed to perk her up.
âOh yeah! Suck it, Logan!â Carlota cheered.
Except for tonight it seemed.
âRight, girls,â Mom announced from the kitchen. She had been clearing the dishwasher once she gave up on keeping the couch or floors crumb-freeâan impossible task with how much aforementioned jumping, yelling, and hooting were involved. And still, every game night, sheâd try. âI need to run a few late errands,â she continued. âKendall? Give me a hand?â
Kendall glanced at the game. Any other day she wouldâve bargained for one more goal, one more shot. But frankly, she was bored. So she shrugged off her thick Minnesota Wild jersey and threw it at the blanket pile in the corner sectional.
âHey! Iâm only on one life left!â Katie yelled from her wool-acrylic blend fortress. She shook the jersey off to reveal only her concentrated face and the thumbs mashing buttons on her DS. She then threw it down on her lap with a huge huff. âDammit!â
âLanguage,â Mom warned, though she fondly shook her head. Then to the other two, âGirls, look after Katie.â
âCopy that, Mama Knight.â Logan and Carlota flashed a pair of thumbs ups. Their eyes stayed stuck to the plasma screen.
Kendall stared out the window as they drove towards the grocery store. Because of tonightâs game, they needed a top-up on snacks, Mom said, âEspecially for your video shoot tomorrow.â
âWe usually have a craft table on set, you know that, Mom.â
It was weird to think that just a month ago, all these sights were new, unfamiliar. The streetlights and shopfronts smeared into ribbons of colour, providing a visualiser for the love song currently crooning through the radio.
Why couldnât they just have thatâan abstract visualiser? Their voices were already attached to the suggestive lyrics. She didnât need the world to also see her sway her hips and lay in undignified poses while mouthing along. Plus, itâll be so much easier on Griffinâs deep, deep pocketsânot that the current budget made any dent, Kendall imagined, being the fourth richest CEO of the world or whatever.
âSo I heard youâre not happy with your new song,â Mom said, turning down the radio.
âDid Gustavo go to you?â Kendall groaned in her seat. âMom, itâs fine, Iâm doing it. Thereâs nothing to worry about.â
âSo you want to do it?â
Silence.
âHoney,â Mom began, her gentle maternal tone caressing painfully between Kendallâs ribs, âI know youâre an independent girl and youâre used to solving your own problems, but please let meââ
âNo, Mom,â Kendall sighed. She wanted nothing more than to fuse into the car upholstery, to have polyester plug her mouth and ears from this conversation. But last she heard, science hadnât gotten that far yet. So Kendall was stuck there, in the car, on the highway, with Momâs hurt look boring from the corner of her eye.
Fuck. It wasnât a rejection, Kendall wanted to yell. Her sigh came out a huff but not to her momâs offer but because there was just so much on her mind that she wouldnât even know how to explain or express right andâ
âNo, I donât want to,â Kendall finally pushed out. âBut everyone in the band is cool with it,â and then quieter, âand everyone outside of it thinks itâs cool too.â
Mom quirked an eyebrow. âSince when did you, Kendall Donna Knight, care about being cool?â
After a rehearsal, Big Time Rush were going through their group choreo by the poolâthree of them at least. Kendall was sat on a deck chair with her arms defiantly crossed over her chest. Camille took the vacant spot, the other girls guiding her through each step because âteaching is a great method of memorisation,â Logan vouched (though Kendall knew very well that Logan had the moves down already).
Halfway through the chorus, Jo came up to them with furrowed brows and a confused smile. âWhat are you guys doing?â she asked. âAnd why arenât you joining in, Kendall?â
Kendall was ready to tell her all about it, from Griffinâs ridiculous ask for a single thatâs âhot and sizzling!â to Jamesâ infuriatingly efficient work ethic to provide just that. And oh, Jo wouldnât believe howâ
âWait, that move was so cool! Teach me!â
Kendall shut up after that. She didnât want to show her ass (both literally and figuratively) to Jo of all people. So she just sat down on it and let the complaints die in her throat. If the coolest girl she knew thought it was coolâand the other girls, of courseâthen maybe Kendall could suck it up and be cool with it too.
Which was too embarrassing to admit to her own mom. She didnât need a lecture on the dangers of peer pressure or whatever. So instead, Kendall revealed the second more pressing truth.
âBecause if I donât do this, itâll be the end of Big Time Rush,â she explained, just as Kelly did to her a few days ago. âIâŚâ Kendall sighed. âI canât do that to the band. I canât crush their dreamsâRoxyâs dream.â
Because thatâs the whole reason Kendall did all this in the first place, wasnât it? For Roxy? Kendall remembered just how crushed she was when Gustavo rejected her audition. And again when Kendall was chosen instead later that night.
Week after week, their future in Hollywood kept getting threatened by reasons outside their control. This oneâs in their controlâin Kendallâs control. And she canât do that to the girls, especially Roxy, knowing what happened with her last band.
Mom shot a look. âYou have to remember that youâre in this band too, honey.â
âI know, Mom, butââ
âNo buts,â she interrupted. She was firm. She drummed her fingertips on the steering wheel before blowing out a breath. âI know when you were little, I wasnât able to be there for you girlsââ
âMom, donât say thatââ
âBut now I can,â she barrelled through. âAnd Iâm here for you, Katieâs here for you. And so are your friendsâespecially your friends,â Mom continued. âSo at the very least, talk to them, okay? To all of them.â
Kendall slumped back in her seat. âFine,â she murmured. âI will.â
She wonât.
Kendall looked out as they rounded into the grocery store parking lot. Surprisingly, it was still fairly populated this late on a weekday. Her shifts back in Minnesota used to end earlier, and even then, her final hours were pretty slow. She didnât miss it. Sheâd much rather be here with her friends. Even if it meant doing songs she hated and moves that made her want to crawl out of her skin.
âI promise you,â Mom said, setting the parking brake before looking right at Kendall. âThey will understand.â
âSheâs right, yâknow.â
The two Knights screamed at the voice from the back seat.
âKatie!â Mom yelped, half scolding, half startled. âHow did youâWhen didâDonât scare us like that! What if we were on the road?â
âWhich is why I waited til we parked?â An unsaid âduhâ ghosted the end of Katieâs statement. âNow can I please go to the toilet? I drank too much juice and now I really really need to go.â
Katie plead innocence with a jut of her lip and big watery eyes that shone even under the shadow of night. The parking lot floodlights bounced just the right angles under the cover of the vehicle, reminding them of the little girl she was.
Mom exhaled a sigh of resignation. There was no use arguing about it, not to her baby girl, and not right then. And she certainly didnât want to lose the deposit for the rental car. She looked over to her eldest. âKendall?â She motioned.
That was permission enough.
Katie shot off for the toilets, her stepped-in sneakers squeaking past staring shoppers and tired clerks, with her sister right on her tailâjust until the stall door slammed shut.
âDonât listen to me pee.â
âI canât not listen to you pee. What, you want me to wait outside? âCause I can.â
âNo! Stay. Turn on the tap, singâsomething.â
Kendall rolled her eyes yet entertained her little sister all the same, just as she had for over nine whole years. Sheâd been wrapped around Katieâs little finger even before they were long enough to fully grip hers. And they both knew it.
Kendall ran her fingers under the running water, babbling out a melody and eventually some half-coherent lyrics about peeing. She didnât bother telling Katie that her business was still audible.
âWe all need a spot to piss, no buts about it. No bu-utts,â Kendall sang, âPiss.â
âThatâs so gross,â Katie chided, despite the childish grin on her face when she left the stall.
Kendall snorted. âAnd the giant turd song was fine?â
Itâs a good shout that she and the rest of her bandmates were relieved from songwriting. Their whole discography wouldâve all been about bodily excretions. Kendall used to balk at the idea of singers who donât compose their own lyrics. She also used to balk at the whole concept of girl groups, yet here she was in one.
Katie took over the open tap with her now sudsy hands. âSo, whatâs the plan?â she asked. She had that familiar twinkle in her eye, the one that meant she was ready to do something rule-breakingâpotentially law-breakingâand was equally ready to wiggle out of each and every one of them.
âKatie,ââand Kendall hated to put it outâ âThere is no plan.â
âButââ
âNo buts, Katie.â
âWhat? No, but you saidââ
âNo buts.â Kendall repeated, more firmly this time.
Katieâs eyes flicked back and forth, scanning every bit of Kendallâs stern look. Until finally, sensing her defeat, Katie looked away with a huff. âPiss,â she grumbled under her breath.
Thanks to her assigned verse (and general stompy demeanour through the whole process), Kendall didnât have to dance with a partner. At least, not all the way through. Her only bit of partnerwork was pushing away âthis one boyâ as per the lyrics James so kindly wrote for them, a move she was a little too happy to do in rehearsals. Her dance partner later informed her of the concept of blocking.
âTo save energy, dancers donât go full out every time,â he explained.
A bit passive aggressive, sure, but Kendall meant to get him an apology gift card. It was just one timeâshe didnât mean to elbow him so hard. In her defence, Mr X didnât warn that theyâll be going full-speed and not half- like theyâve been rehearsing. She was too focused on not smashing her knees when dropping into her twist-half-squat thing (she had to do some floorwork to compensate for the lack of âdynam-X,â in the words of Mr X, who then uncrossed his arms and shimmied away).
âCut!â the director yelled. He motioned for his assistant to rub his temples.
Griffinâs budget landed them with an experienced music video director, âthe biggest in the business,â apparently. But heâs also the biggest pain in the ass, having the most bizarre demands for a light to be turned half a degree to the left, the music a decibel higher, his water a unit fresher (whatever that means).
Griffin didnât seem fazed. He was for some reason posted up in his own little directorâs chair a little further back, most probably directing his own bizarre demands to his personal posse. He was happy to hand the reins to this bigshot director, silently overlooking the whole thingâperhaps having learnt from their near-disaster of a photoshoot weeks ago (Kendall doubted it). But as difficult as it was to work with Marcos Del Posey, he at least treated them like people.
âYou, blondie,â the director barked, talking at Kendall than to her. He even snapped his fingers at her, like she was some sort of dog with no grasp on language nor the shit spewing from his mouth. âLook more⌠alive. From the top!â
âActually, letâs take five,â Kelly interjected. He didnât like that, but had the humility and self-preservation instincts to shrink under her glare. âLogan, warm up,â she instructed. âWeâll do your backflip takes while your staminaâs still up.â
From her final position on the floor, Kendall sighed, letting her overworked muscles slacken until she was flat on her back. She pressed the heels of her palms into her eye sockets, hoping itâll squeeze down all the frustration foaming up behind them.
It didnât.
Kendallâs view of the unremarkable steel rafters was then blocked by a hand. It helped her up to her feet.
âOn the real takes is when you go full out.â
âYes, I got that, Cameron,â Kendall said through gritted teeth. âThank you.â
Cameron flashed a smile thatâs just begging to be elbowed before regrouping with the other dancers.
And they said Kendall was difficult to work with.
As she trudged behind the directorâs chair, Kendall caught a glimpse of her last take replaying on his monitor. She looked like an actual popstar. Mostly thanks to makeup and wardrobe, who adorned her with twinkly powders and trendy pieces, bibbidi bobbidi booing her into a girl many back in Minnesota seemed to effortlessly emulate.
Every lunch, Kendall would pass by her classmates poring over the latest issues of Top Pop Tiger Teeny Bopper Gasp! magazine. The next day theyâd return looking like a Top Pop Teen that had strutted straight out of the pages. With BTRâs recent centrefold feature, Kendall realised that sheâs now one of them.
She frowned.
She shoved her arms into the giant button-up by the craft table. âSo you donât stain your video outfits,â Kelly explained earlier, which Kendall thought was stupid. Who at their age couldnât drink bottled fruit water without getting it all over themselves?
Kendall Knight, apparently.
One moment she had a mouthful of the overpriced sugar water when out of nowhere, she was ambushed with a tsunami of questions.
âKendall, whatâs going on?â
âAre you hurt? Did you get an injury?â
âDo you need to go over the choreo? We could ask Mr X.â
As she coughed and sputtered, Kendallâs gaze followed Carlotaâs finger over Loganâs lunges and toward their choreographer. Heâs doing a solo salsa across the warehouse floor. Or was it a merengue? Kendall couldnât care less.
âGuys, Iâm fine,â Kendall wheezed out, accepting the napkin Roxy handed her. And she was fine, before she had to hack out diluted dye from her airways. âAnd nothingâs going on,â she reassured them, dabbing at the overshirt before it soaked through. âIâm doing the right moves at the right time, arenât I?â
How could she not? When Mr X was behind the cameras blocking the mirrored moves back to her. At least, it mightâve been blocking? His full-out body rolls and sharp transitions suggest otherwise. And not to mention all the scatting that had been burned right into Kendallâs brain (tch-tch-ah! And one, two, push and turn-down!).
âI guess youâre right, but...â Roxy hesitated, sharing a look with the other two. âYouâre missing the fire.â
Kendall scrunched her nose. âThe... fire?â
Kendall knew what Roxy meant. To be honest, she had found herself spacing out all day. Each time the playback started, her conscious mind just shut off to let muscle memory take over. With how many times Mr X had them run it, you bet every joint and fibre in her body remembered, even when her skull felt full of ash.
The fire was what got her here. The fire caught Gustavoâs eye. But it was also what slowed them down. Thatâs just what Kendall does, sheâd defy Gustavo and rile him up just because. Most of the time it was well deservedâKendallâs just standing up for her friends. Other times⌠well, sheâs not above that. But today she figured sheâd save him the headacheâhe probably needed it.
Kendall snuck a glance Gustavoâs way. His lips continued flapping at Kelly and James, the latter two doing their best to calm him down. Gustavoâs voice stayed a stunningly low decibel (for once, he wasnât yelling for the whole of California to hear), yet the signature scowl remained. Kendall blinked. Guess heâs just like that.
âAre you sure thereâs nothing?â Logan pressed, now jogging in place.
âYou know you could tell us anything, right?â added Roxy.
Carlota nodded. âYeah. Like, it was kinda weird last night when you didnâtâ"
âStop the production!â
All heads whipped to the source.
Kendall was thankfully relieved from the heat of the interrogation lamp. But the dial of the thermostat continued to go lower and lower as realisation steeped in. Kendall was frozen. She couldnât even react when a light guy muttered, âwho the hell is that?â
In marched Katie wearing a matching two-piece suit and an official looking briefcase in hand, followed by Mom in a more casual attire, clearly struggling to keep up with her daughterâs strides, yet walked with a certain swagger Kendall was certain sheâd been instructed to embody. And finally, tailing both of them was Freight Train.
âSorry, boss. I couldnât stop them,â said the hulking bodyguard to Gustavoâs deepening frown.
Kelly, perhaps sensing the shitshow about to happen, immediately took action. âKatie, this is not the time,â she hissed, tilting her head Griffinâs way.
âAh, Mr Griffin. Just the man I want to see.â Katie swiftly dodged Kellyâs attempts at blocking and approached the CEO with an outstretched hand. âKatie Knight, Knight Management. Youâre making the biggest financial mistake of your life.â
Katie then prattled on about target demographics, internal market research, core consumer bases, ultimate buying powerâall these big corporate buzzwords Kendall couldnât help but tune out, even at the few big girl roundtable meetings Gustavo let them sit in (at one point, Katie even mentioned aliensâKendallâs still trying to figure out what that had to do with anything).
From wardrobe to lighting, dancers to runners, and not least of all, CEO Arthur Griffin himself; everyone raptly watched the nine-year-old present all her findings, supported by supplemental graphs and documents. Katie commanded the room as if she was thrice her age, twice her height, with one hell of an attitudeâthe last of which she clearly already had.
âThese parents,â Katie continued, gesturing to a flowchart, âtheyâll smear, not only Big Time Rush, but the rest of RCM CBT Globalnet Sanyoidâs musical acts. Then the electronics, home appliances, missile defence systems. And thatâs bye bye to your place as fourth most powerful CEO in America.â Katie dramatically ripped and balled up a magazine cover with Griffinâs face on it. âYouâll be lucky to just slide to fifth.â
Griffin nodded. âI hate prime numbers.â
Watching Katie in her element, Kendall felt the warmth of pride wash over, thawing her paralysed muscles. But the dial of the thermostat continued to go higher and higher as realisation steeped in. It was getting hard to breathe.
Kendall quietly excused herself and slipped outside. She almost collapsed onto the metal railing by the doors.
Itâs all over.
Itâs actually over.
A Griffinâs not gonna barge through those doors being all, âActually, itâs not over because I donât have the final sayâa chimp does.â The only primate they need to convince this time round was Arthur Griffin, and he just received very compelling evidence to shut this whole shit down.
Kendall drummed her fingertips on the railing and blew out a breath. When their demos were accepted, and they found out they could stay in Los Angeles, Kendall remembered the relief on Momâs face, of not having to work long hours again; Katie, to stay where she finally felt she thrived; the girls, to continue chasing this dream; andâŚ
âDid you hear? Weâre not doing the song anymore.â The heavy door slammed shut behind James.
Kendallâs gaze stayed at the distance.
âHello? Did you hear me? You got what you wanted. Weâre not doing theââ
Kendall just grunted.
In return, James scoffed. âWhy are you so mad at me?â
âIâm not mad at you.â
âThen why are you yelling?!â No, she wasnât. âWhy do you hate the song so much? Why do you hate mââ
âBecause Iâm not ready!â And this time Kendall did yell, finally facing the boy. âTo be seen likeâŚâI basically had to be a second mother, while my own was busting her ass off waiting tables to put food on ours. And I love herâI really doâshe did her best and made it work. But I had to grow up quick. For Mom, for Katie. Especially after my dadââ Kendall swallowed. She finally registered the look on Jamesâ face. She finally registered his presence.
Maybe she shouldnât have spewed all that.
Kendall turned away, embarrassed. Then, in a smaller voice, clarified, âIâm not ready to be seen as⌠a woman.â
The admission was met with quiet. The rustle of leaves, the rumble of engines, and the ruffle of feathers all worked together to mask the small âohâ from behind her.
âIt doesnât matter anyway.â Kendall sniffed. âWeâre not gonna be seen as anything when we go back to Minnesota.â
âHold on, Kendall, what are you talking about?â
Kendall shouldâve known better than to doubt her sister. To the undisclosed amount allocated to the project, Katie made sure it wonât go to waste. She suggested giving the song to Kidzie Channel alum Serena R. Pender, who just signed to Rocque Records with hopes of breaking out of her clean, shiny family-friendly box. The actress-turned-singer apparently loved the snippet Katie sent and was excited to get her vocals on itâwith Griffinâs blessing.
âIâm getting my first writing credit outside BTR!â James beamed. âSo Griffin better not kick us out just yet.â
âWeâre staying,â Kendall breathed. She couldnât believe it. How many more close calls would they run into before their luck ran out? Or before her body gave outâwhichever came first. Either way, at that moment, Kendall was eternally grateful to get to stay at her new home with her mom, her sister, and all her friends beside her, old and new.
âWho youâre thinking of every night? That you canât sleep?â
âOh my god, Kendall, shut up.â
âWalked inâŚâ She sighed dreamily. âDream-came-trued it forâow!â Even with the slight throb of pain on her arm, Kendall couldnât help the bubble of laughter that escaped her.
Beside her, James cradled his face in his hands, as if Kendall hadnât already seen how red it turned. âCan you go back to being mad at me?â he groaned. âI wish we never made up.â
âNo, you donât.â Kendall grinned.
âNo, I donât.â James repeated, a wide smile mirrored on his own face.

bonus little scene i set up at the end of gtr3 but never finished writing. happens directly after the dance, way before espresso. super rough
-
james walked down the rocque records hallway as fast as his legs could take him. [even though 2am, couldnât sleep. he wrote til the actual crack of dawn. allowed himself to sleep for an hour.] james knew for a fact that gustavo had a meeting that morning, which would be the perfect time for him to slip in and delete the recording.
he slept for six.
[rushed to the studio]
rounded the door to see gustavo.
[...]
âno, gustavo, i donât think thatâs necessary.â james chuckled nervously. âitâs just a little personal and very, very rough and you really donât have toâ"
âFUCK YOU, EAT SHIT, CHOKE ON YOUR SALIVA.â
Kelly let out a small but audible squeak at the obscene lyrics blaring from the speakers. the audio quality wasnât great as james didnât bother to set up the mics last night. the instrumental bled into the vocal track. but it was unfortunately clean enough to hear each and every word clearly. and for each and every word replayed through the speakers, james sank further and further into the creaky swivel chair.
âFUCK YOU, EAT SHITââ
gustavo paused it.
the room was silent.
uncomfortably so.
the soundproofed walls were doing so good a job, james swore gustavo and Kelly could also hear the rush of blood in his ears. his heart working overtime even when itâs dropped all the way to his ass. james braced himself for gustavoâs next words.
introducing girl time rush featuring kengirl, girlos, logirl and... james. who isn't in the band. but @myloveforhergoeson's roxy is!!
anyway i had uhh too many ideas and it's way longer than i planned it to be sooo yeah :o)
[based on ash @myloveforhergoeson's au idea from her poll here]
~
Besides his handsome looks and perfectly styled hair, one defining trait of James Diamond is that he sings. Heâs the performer. Heâs not one to shy away from the spotlight, usually being the first in line for every karaoke, taking it way too seriously with pretty boy hair flicks to make the likes of Dak Zevon hurl, interspersed between âspur of the momentâ (read: heavily rehearsed) dance moves engineered to make teenage girls swoon. If superlatives were a thing before senior year, heâd be voted most likely to go to Hollywood.
And so the possibility that world famous producer Gustavo Rocque might reject him didnât even cross his mind.
âN-no? Well, I can sing another one of my songs. Out of everybody in this room, the only girl I see isââ
âYOU,â yelled Gustavo, âneed to get off MY STAGE.â
âWait! No! I canââ
He stopped himself. Jamesâ eyes dart to the shifting security guards by the door. One wrong move and they will not hesitate to throw him and his dream out the door, down the drain, and all other relevant idioms that had escaped his mind at that moment.
He canât get rejected. Heâs James Diamond, for godâs sake! This Diamondâs too big for Minnesota, heâd always said. It would then be followed by supportive shoulder claps and the occasional âhell yeah, brother!â
And to reject him in his lucky white v-neck? Not cool. Should he not have worn his ultra-cool Hollywood-ready blazer jacket? Was an extra layer of fabric interfering with its luck?
He reached between the unbuttoned garment to wipe a sweaty palm on the white cotton-polyester blend. Before he could, the fabric snagged onto a corner of plastic. His eyes widen.
If he canât be a star, heâd take any ticket out of the Midwest.
So James took out from his jacket â slowly, as to not startle the intimidating security guards â a hastily put together CV and portfolio. He handed it off to Gustavo Rocque and the woman beside him (his assistant?), all the while nervously rambling of its contents: every school performance heâd done, every bar and bat mitzvah heâd DJâd (rounded up to the next⌠10), his inflated familiarity with audio equipment.
He also went on about the transcriptions of the best five songs heâd written, attached with a CD containing recordings of said songs played on the piano. And that he can play the piano. And the guitar (he could strum, like, four chords, but with a capo, heâs practically set for any radio-quality pop song).
âAnd so because of that, I thinkâI know I would be a great asset to Rocque Records,â was the only thing James remembered saying despite the avalanche of words that preceded it. âSir,â he quickly added.
Okay, so maybe rejection had crossed his mind before facing Gustavo Rocque, just long enough to put the folder together. But he wasnât willing to admit it back then, instead choosing to continue living in delusion.
James gulped. His usual confident demeanour was gone. His gaze flicked to the security guards.
The open plastic folder.
Gustavo Rocqueâs permanent scowl.
His 8âx10â personalised headshots on the ground.
The woman muttering something or another to the uncharacteristically quiet producer.
Then finally, âGo wait in the lobby.â
So James Diamond left the audition room with⌠hope? Did he dare entertain the possibility that his dream of going to Hollywood might actually become a reality? Gustavo didnât say no, but he didnât say yes either. The sight of upset rejected auditionees milling about the space almost sobered him.
âYOU.â James snapped back to reality to an angry blonde girl storming right up to him. âIt was funny, wasnât it? Turning the sprinklers on?â Her lips were stretched into a smile too wide, as if daring him to laugh. The look in her eyes said itâd be a bad idea. âWe had to miss half our practice because of you.â
âIâum, I mean it wasnâtâit was more of my friendsâ idea andââ
She scoffed. âOf course! âCause James Diamond can do no wrong! Well listen here, you littleââ
âKendall!â Carlota Garcia waved her over from the sign-up desk, beside Logan Mitchell and another girl James didnât recognise. The woman from earlier was quickly approaching the girls with a stack of fresh sign-up sheets.
Kendall Knight jabbed a threatening finger two inches from his face. âThis conversation isnât over.â She huffed and rushed back towards her friends.
As the talent scout gave all four girls a number and a sheet, James tried to catch her eye for any hints if not a straight up answer. Had they decided? How long was he supposed to wait? Was this one of those things where they never call you back if you werenât accepted?
â810,â she announced before retreating back into the theatre. She didnât even glance his way.
âJames!â Carlota greeted, an 812 now proudly stuck on her shirt. Tucked under one arm was the black helmet James swore she never leaves home without, even to all the house parties heâd seen her at. âSorry for almost busting your face open with a hockey stick. Hopefully the rest of you wonât bruise too badly.â She grinned sheepishly.
âOh, uh. Apology accepted,â James said, because what are you supposed to say to that?
To be fair, she did seem genuinely apologetic. Even if earlier that afternoon Carlota had the loudest battle cry and was in the frontlines as the entire girlsâ field hockey team descended upon James and his friends (rightfully so).
Carlota sat next to her friends, bar Logan, then patted the empty seat beside her. James quickly glanced a few chairs over at Kendall whoâs pretending not to care. Though itâs not fun to face the wrath of Kendall Knight, captain of said girlsâ field hockey team, his other option was to wait alone surrounded by people whose dreams were definitely crushed. With his own fate up in the air, he canât be around all that negative energy. So James gingerly accepted her offer.
Carlota poked the 809 stuck to his chest. âSo howâd it go? Is he nice?â
âWellâŚâ
The doors clicked open. Carlota shot up from her seat. Logan emerged from the audition room visibly shaken up. âHeâs satan,â she reported with a trembling hiss before curling up into Carlotaâs chair. They never ran in the same circles, but James had seen Logan freak out before presentations, and then crushing it (he predicts her future valedictorian speech will go the same). To his memory, she was never this affected.
âIâm gonna need another minute,â the new girl muttered. Her 811 sticker looked lopsided as she tensely leaned back into her chair.
â811? 811âs up.â James tried once again to get the womanâs attention. He was once again ignored.
âHey, you got this!â Carlota said encouragingly. The girl was frozen in her seat. It didnât seem like she got it. With a curt nod from Kendall, Carlota swiftly swapped numbers with the girl. âI got this.â Carlota put on her helmet and smacked the side of it. She then shot playful finger guns to the rest of them, clearly undeterred by her friendâs testimony.
The doors closed behind her with a bang. It seemed to echo around the space, now quiet, unlike earlier when it had been filled with the nervous energy of hundreds of hopeful applicants. It was now filled by the nervous energy of two â or one, as Kendall managed to comfort Logan from a full on breakdown over the other girlâs paralysed body.
James shifted in his seat. Without Carlota as a balm, he felt out of place. Which felt wrong. Heâd arguably been the most popular guy of their year for a few years now, and so being the odd one out felt⌠odd.
He cleared his throat. âSo are you gonna introduce us?â he said, referring to the still frozen girl. âI donât think Iâve seen you at Mountain Aire before.â
âRoxy?â Loganâs eyebrows furrowed, confused. James blinked. âRoxanne Somerset,â she repeated, as if James was supposed to know. When he still clearly didnât, she added, âSheâs been at Mountain Aire since the start of the semester.â
âYeah,â Kendall scoffed. âYou literally have chemistry together.â
âYou think so? I mean, obviously Iâm irresistible. And I guess with a pretty girl like herâŚâ Ever the chronic flirt, James couldnât help but take the accidental set up. The corner of his mouth curled into the smirk heâd perfected as soon as puberty hit and he shot up a foot taller.
He at least had the decency to falter a little when the new girl broke from her catatonic state to shoot him a bewildered look, one that perfectly encapsulated the sentiment of âseriously?â
Kendall had a similar look. âNot the fucking time, Diamond.â
The doors open, Carlota practically bouncing out of them despite the yelling emanating from within. âNot going to Hollywood!â she announced with a giant grin.
The talent scout emerged once again. â812.â She looked straight at Roxy. James had given up on getting her attention. â812 is next,â she said pointedly.
Roxy crumpled and gasped for air. âI donât think I can do this,â she said. âThank you guys, for coming all this way with me, but I donât think Iâm what theyâreââ
Kendall clamped onto Roxyâs shoulders, forcing her to sit up straight. âRox, this is your dream,â Kendall said. She looked straight into her friendâs eyes to make sure each and every word was received.
There was a reason Kendall Knightâs the captain of the MAHS girlsâ field hockey team. Sheâs great at the sport, sure, but more important was her ability to instill confidence in others. She had a gift of making you believe you can make it through the end of the world alive. And maybe even make you see that the world wasnât ending after all.
âNow grab that opportunity with both hands and go big time!â Kendall practically shoved Roxy through the doors. The girl stumbled a little (Kendall clearly overshot it with her hockey playerâs strength) but walked the rest of the way with her head held high.
When the door fully shut, Kendall turned to the rest of them. âNow how do we get in?â
The group managed to sneak in through the back without attracting attention from security (turned out they were only posted at the front doorâa lousy job on the venueâs part, James thought). James had every intention to stay back in case the talent scout or Gustavo Rocque himself came out to look for him. But Carlota had a tight grip on his arm and so it didnât seem like he had a choice.
They settled in behind a row of seats halfway down the theatre. As Roxy started singing, Jamesâ ears perked up. If he ended up getting rejected over her, heâd be disappointed of course, but heâd honestly understand. She looked like she belonged up there on stage â a bigger one even, with a whole crowd of people screaming her name, singing the lyrics back to her. Thereâs no way Gustavo wouldâ
But he did. A barrage of insults poured out of his mouth one after the next after the next after the next. Roxy stood frozen in the centre of the stage, mouth gaping open at every insult slung her way. âBecause YOU,â Gustavo yelled, âhave NO TALENT!â
âNo talent?! No talent?!â Before any of them could process what was happening, Kendall was up and out of her hiding spot, marching right up to the front. The rest of them simply watched as Kendall gave the producer a taste of his own medicine. She insulted his lack of recent success, mocked his last big hit. She even went as far as jumping onto the table, kicking all the stuff off it (James hoped none of them were his folder).
âHey, hereâs a new hit for ya! Oh, youâre such a turd! Oh yeah, a giant turd! And you look like a turd, and you smell like aâlet go of me!â
James didnât thinkâhe didnât have to. What else was he meant to do but rush down the aisle and attempt to break Kendall free from the security guardsâ grasp? Before long, the rest of their party were also caught in the tussle of limbs and war cries and threats of violence.
The party soon grew bigger when the cops showed up.
-
The teens were all eventually escorted to Kendallâs house. Thankfully, no charges were pressed against them, much to Loganâs relief, who all the way had been muttering anxiously of juvie and community service and permanent records.
They stood before the modest two-storey home, each of them chattering partly from the biting Minnesota chill, but mostly nerves. The door opened. Before Kendall could say anything to smooth over whatâs clearly an incriminating situation, her mom beat her to it.
âJames?â
âHi, Mrs Knight.â
After a quick group interrogation and a reprise of the giant turd song to an audience of one (Kendallâs little sister insisted), James found himself standing outside the bathroom door. A set of multicoloured lines etched by the doorway caught his eye â a height chart. He ran a finger up the entire length, as if strumming a rotated harp, from pinks to a mix of greens and purples. He stopped at the topmost line. The green mark fell right by his shoulders.
He quickly dropped his hand when he heard footsteps approaching. It was Roxy. She was pacing back and forth deep in her thoughts.
âHey,â James said.
Roxy startled. She realised she wasnât alone. âHi.â
They stared at each other.
She blinked. âSorry, I shouldââ
âAre you okay?â
âYes. No? I donât know.â She sighed. She leaned against the wall and examined the family photos across her. Kendall in her hockey gear, Katie with a missing tooth, the three Knights with their arms around each other. Roxy tilted her head. âWhat if heâs right?â
âWhat?â
âGustavo. Shouldâve known Iâm not cut out for Hollywood.â She chuckled dryly. âItâs sweet the others pushed me to audition, but shouldnât I have learned by now? How brutal the music industry is? From dad? FromâŚâ Her face settled into a frown. She swallowed. âWhat if I really have no talent?â
âHey.â Jamesâ voice was stern. âYou are talented. Gustavoâs a giant idiot not to see that. The biggest giantest turd, if you will.â
James wasnât sure Roxy was convinced (he was no Kendall Knight), but it at least elicited a smile.
The doorbell rang.
âHey, come on.â James motioned to the living room. âLetâs get back to the others.â
What they didnât expect was for Gustavo Rocque to get back to them.
-
They finally landed at LAX. It had been a turbulent journey â both literally and figuratively.
Logan and Carlota went to the bathroom to help Roxy through her motion sickness. Mrs Knight had gone to buy her whatever might be useful, and Katie joined to look at keychains. Which left James and Kendall to keep guard of the bags.
They sat in silence.
It was awkward.
The two hadnât really talked since they bumped into each other at the grocery store, where Kendall successfully negotiated for Gustavo to extend his initial offer to her (with James as her assistant) to all four of them as a girl group (with James as their assistant).
When Kendall first rejected her ticket to Hollywood, thus by extension rescinding Jamesâ, he had been pissed. He was ready to never see Kendall ever again and live the rest of his life in bitter misery. And so a few⌠choice words were exchanged between them that night outside the Knightsâ humble abode. No one was more surprised than James when his name was tacked on the end of Kendallâs final deal with the producer.
James couldnât take the silence. He made a comment on the newsstand in their line of vision. Something about Joey Carmichael from first grade? Kendall shot back to defend Joeyâs name even though neither of them have seen him since then. They bantered comfortably back and forth for a moment before the laughter eventually petered out.
Awkwardness seeped back in.
Silence weighed down on them.
James debated whether to bring up what he said the night of the audition. They were brutal. And so were Kendallâs words â they unfortunately knew just which bruises to poke. James knew she didnât really mean them and very quickly forgave her. He wasnât sure if she felt the same. He opened his mouth.
âKatie missed you,â Kendall said. Her tone was flat. She kept her gaze forward.
âOh yeah?â James said instead. He didnât miss the way Katie practically ran down the stairs when she heard him at their front door that night. Or how every time she stretched her legs on the flight, she stopped by his aisle almost as often as she did her own sisterâs. Guilt tugged at his gut.
Kendall hummed. âSo did my mom.â
James observed the new wave of passengers passing by. Families, businessmen, wide eyed teens and young adults with guitar cases on their backs hoping to get their big break â not unlike themselves.
âDid you?â he wanted to ask. Did she ever think of him? Did she ever think of how much he fucked up? Pushing her away at a time he really needed a friend? Destroying the only constant in his life when so many changes were happening, from voice cracks to growth spurts to his parentsâ eventual divorce. Did Kendall ever think of how much he missed her?
All these words and more danced at the back of his throat, all of them refusing to come out. But finally, after too long a pause, he mustered enough courage to stutter out a âDidââ
âYou? Surviving a zombie apocalypse? Donât be ridiculous.â Logan, Roxy and Carlota finally returned. Roxy chugging a bottle of water looking a little rough, the other two locked in a heated debate over their friendâs head. Logan turned to the two of them. âKendall, tell Carlota itâs impossible to survive a zombie apocalypse with just a jetpack.â
Carlota groaned. âLook, Iâm just saying, if I had one, a zombie apocalypse wouldnât even beââ
Kendall ignored them. âHey, Rox, you good?â
Roxy unhooked her arm from Loganâs to sit on Kendallâs other side. She leaned her head on the blondeâs shoulder. âIâm just so glad weâre finally here.â Her voice was weak, but the awe and excitement of being so close to Hollywood was still clear. It was clear on all their faces.
Kendall patted Roxyâs hand. âAnd Iâm glad to be here with all of you.â Everyone exchanged smiles and echoed her sentiment. Kendallâs gaze stayed on her hands.
Carlota then slung an arm over Loganâs shoulders and lifted her half-full water bottle in a toast. âHereâs to the beginning of our musical journey!â

James was ready to forget about Dak after that â for real, this time. He was ready to get over the whole thing and bury his head into more pressing matters, like work (no, there will not be a song written about He Who Shall Not Be Named). But, James learned, itâs really hard to avoid thinking of someone whose face was plastered on just about every billboard, TV screen, and magazine cover in existence. It also doesnât help that Jamesâ phone kept buzzing with new notifications from the yet to be named contact.
On set rn & drive me batty sounds great :D
Recording more vv2 songs w gustavo. wish u were here instead D.
Man last minute script changes are the wooorrst D:
And of course James had to reply to every single one of them (what? Itâd be rude not to). More often than not, a simple reply would spiral into full on conversations about a video game they both play, an obscure cartoon they both grew up watching, or the best hairstyling products to wear on screen (who knew Dak Zevon was a Cuda fan too?). The text chains only stop when they have a responsibility to get back to, or if one of them fell asleep mid-convo.
James found these conversations to be helpingâreally. When youâre talking about the most menial everyday things, like which LA pizza chain was the best (Panucciâs, obviously), it was easier to see Dak as just another guy who happened to work in Hollywood, rather than Dak Zevon, Varsity Vampire star â untouchable, larger than life, crushed on by every teen and tween attuned even a little bit to pop culture.
Which James was not one of. Not anymore.
Yo u at the palm woods? D.
Yeah whats up?
âJames,â Bitters called, stopping him in his tracks.
James sighed. What trouble have the girls gotten up to this time? He ignored the incoming texts for now and dragged his feet to the front desk, not before sending one last longing look to the pool chair calling his name. He double checked for the Rocque Records company card in his pockets.
Turned out, this time, there werenât any complaints filed against the group of teens. Nor any exorbitant damage fees to be paid (James suspected Bitters upcharged them compared to if any other Palm Woods guest had done it â maybe heâll get Logan on the case).
âDelivery came for you,â Bitters said, already disinterested in the conversation. He then took out a lush bouquet of flowers, which James only had a moment to admire before it was slammed onto the desk with a hefty thump. A few red petals fluttered off.
âWhatâis this a prank? I wasnât expecting anything.â James carefully scooped up the beautifully wrapped bouquet to prevent any further damage. And to inspect it for any fart bombs, fake spiders, or at least some indication of who couldâve sent it.
Thereâs a card. And the initials on it made his stomach flip.
âI donât know. I donât care.â Bitters already had his crossword puzzle out. âDelivery guy said itâs from Zac Efron or whatever.â He waved James off.
James probably said a quick thank you, he wasnât sure, and headed towards the general direction of the elevators â he wasnât sure about that either, but he mustâve since he ended up in one of them. He was dazed. James checked again.
His stomach flipped again.
The swoopy messy calligraphy on the outside of the card definitely read âD.z.â
The buzzing in his pockets didnât do much other than remind him of the texts he missed.
Sent some flowers
Thought iâd be all cute and have it sent right outside the door
But the delivery guy couldnât go up past the lobby
Palm woods policy or something? I dunno
They said its at reception
Jamesâ head continued to spin. It was getting hard to read the texts. Or anything, really. The fragrant roses right by his face were not helping.
He sent a selfie of himself cradling the bouquet, kissing the flower heads like a mother would a baby. He hoped it was a silly enough composition to mask the blaring âwhat the fuckâs circling round his head. It was probably evident on his face too.
Pretty right? Dak responded almost instantly. So can you drop it by roxyâs door? I wanna surprise her.
That immediately grounded him.
Of course. James side eyed the pretty flower arrangement. Of course it was.
Despite his illuminating insight the night of the date, James still would rather not hear about Dakâs budding relationship. He thought itâd be hard to avoid since heâs kind of contractually obligated to be around the girl group, which of course, included the other half of that relationship. But much to his relief, Roxy seemed to be hesitant to talk about it. Probably because it was so new.
And the other girls werenât exactly the best at girl talk, at least from what James observed from their weekly movie nights. Every time a romcom comes on, Logan would spout her illogical âlogical arguments on love theoryâ, whatever that is. Kendall would announce âdump him!â at every misstep the male love interest made as if booing the opposition team of a sports game. Whilst on the other end of the spectrum was Carlota, whoâd get distraught at even the side couples breaking up for any misstep big or small, because âloveâs meant to be stronger than that!â
Yeah, James wouldnât go to them for dating advice either (âŚif he had any dates to get advice on).
On the other hand, it seemed like Dak made it his mission to make it as hard as possible for James. Theyâd just be having a vulnerable conversation on how frustrating it was to live up to familial success (his mom, for James; his medical drama actor brother, for Dak), then suddenly Dak would bring up Roxy out of the blue and rope James into similarly confusing wingman-like activities. Heâs already got the charm, the reputation, the girl â what more could James possibly offer?
Take for example the night before. Dak arrived very late to 2Jâs party-not-party get-together, long after it had migrated to the pool. He insisted on spending the entire time hanging around James â which was fine, Dak didnât really know anyone else at the Palm Woods. They were probably three topics in when Dak brought up if James would be mad if he were in Roxyâs shoes or if he shouldâve just not come at all. With the dark sunglasses permanently perched on his nose, he might as well not have been, as Roxy only found him ten minutes before the not-party finally died down. Dak dipped shortly after, something about paparazzi and early call-times, which Roxy was understandably upset about.
Hence, todayâs surprise.
James was about to ding dong ditch, drop the gift off like Dak intended. But unfortunately for lover boy, the door to apartment 2J clicked open before he could. So James simply held out the bunch of flowers.
Roxy remained frozen at the doorway. She did not make any move to accept it. âRoses?â she asked, as if it wasnât obvious. She continued to stare at it, stunned. It was starting to weigh Jamesâ arms down. âForâŚâ Roxy cleared her throat, then said slowly, âwhoâs it from?â
âWho else?â James replied. It came out more clipped than he intended. He pushed his way inside to join the others and passed the bouquet to its intended recipient. A few red petals fluttered off.
James flopped onto the orange couch and observed the arts and crafts session before him. He mindlessly picked up a glitter-glued colander, to which Katie instantly barked at him to put down. The other girls, upon seeing the roses in Roxyâs arms, abandoned their work to tease her. Roxy fended them off as she looked for a vase to put them in.
James wasnât upset that Dakâs dating someone â really, he wasnât. Heâs happy that theyâre even friends, that Dak trusts him enough to divulge into his private life, to bring James out on a personalised midnight tour of the city after a stressful day of shootingâDak even revealed his favourite spot to watch the light-polluted yet breath taking Los Angeles skyline (⌠before inevitably asking if it would be a great date spot, in Jamesâ opinion).
In hindsight, all that anger and bitterness towards the new couple stemmed from embarrassment, if anything. Itâs laughable, to think that Dak would even consider James as anything more. While James had managed to woo a few people at the Palm Woods, none of them really went anywhere beyond that. Back in Minnesota, he had dates like every other week. Since moving, he had none.
Except for that one date with Roxy. Which was fake. They only pretended to be together to chase off some new boyband at Galactic Records who couldn't take no for an answer â that was until another dude was involved (this was before Dak even came into the picture which was why James stepped up to the role).
And then the next day with Jo, when those same boys shifted their sights on a new victim. But Jo basically laughed him off when James put an arm around her shoulder, then reassured him that she got it. Guess she did, as she and Kendall concocted a scheme which ended with the boys literally having their asses kicked. James was surprised to learn that it was Jo doing the ass kicking and not Kendall as he first thought.
And maybe James wasnât really over the whole Hollywood dream, like he said he was. There was a part of him that fantasised of being on an established celebrityâs arm thus catapulting him to stardom (he technically wouldnât be stealing the girlsâ spotlight, like Gustavo warned him against, if he was brought under someone elseâs). He thought maybe then he could skip all the gruelling work of constantly proving themselves to CEOs, businessmen, and at one point an actual ape, so he could finally reap the rewards of fame â for Big Time Rush too (that part didnât cross his mind until much later, but he had to convince himself otherwise to not feel as big of a selfish prick).
But maybe his future as a celebutante wasnât over. James cherished the friendship theyâre building, donât get him wrong, but perhaps he could two-birds-one-stone it and be the Kim K to Dakâs Paris Hilton â without the leaked sex tape part, thank you very much.
Because who even was James Diamond if no one wanted to be him, be with him, or gained a raging bloodlust to destroy him after failing the first two?
-
It was finally the last day of school and they were having the first ever Palm Woods school dance. In true Big Time Rush fashion, the role of dance committee fell to the five of them. In truer Big Time Rush fashion, the responsibility ended up falling to just James and Kendall. The others decided they had more important things to do like finding dates, maintaining dates, shopping â whatever.
James didnât have time for any of that. He had to uphold his reign as Hollywood Super Party King of Hollywood. And for that to happen, he needed to throw the most memorable and epic party the Palm Woods student body will ever see â or as epic as last-minute planning, adult chaperones, and it being an official school event allowed it be. In just a few hours, they had a fully decorated venue (Studio A of Rocque Records), a decked-out snack table (thanks to Jo, though James had to vet every option), a choreographed live performance by Big Time Rush (Gustavo had Mr X chase each girl down with 16 counts of choreo) â he even wore a horse head for Loganâs sake.
And it was perfect.
Until it wasnât.
âVictoria Hodgekiss?!â James cried in anguish. He paced along the length of the control room. âVictoria fucking Hodgeââ he took a breath. âShe might be a perfectly nice person actually.â
Roxy let out a sigh as long as it took to revolve a full 360° in one of the spinny chairs. âWhy are you more fired up than I am? Iâm the one going through a breakup here,â she said flatly.
âYeah, well, I canât get mad on your behalf?â James sputtered. He felt his face heat up. âPlus, someone has to since youâre so weirdly calm about it.â
The âitâ heâs referring to was the scene that went down just 20 minutes ago. In his attempts to help Logan ask Camille out (before getting shooed off because âitâs different for a boy!â), James accidentally asked seven other girls, all of whom unhappy with the misunderstanding and collectively decided to chase him down. This time, while no hockey sticks were involved, some of them had stilettos on. And James wasnât in the mood to find out which was worse. So he took refuge in Gustavoâs office.
Which turned out to be occupied by Roxy, Dak, and a highly incriminating E! News headline.
âYouâve got to believe meâshe means nothing to me. Victoriaâitâs just a PR stunt. James, tell her!â Dakâs eyes were wide, almost pleading. James almost felt sorry for him. But the confusing cocktail of emotions rumbling in his gut (none of them good) was much stronger than whatever shred of sympathy the boy before him was begging for.
âI think weâre done here.â James said.
But Dak continued to put up a fight, more so with James. All Roxy could do was stare at the computer screen as it played a carousel of clips of Dak and his co-star in various romantic situations. Even when Kendall, Carlota, and Logan showed up (James had to call for back up), Dak doubled down even further. He only took Jamesâ suggestion to leave after Logan swung a fist at him for making an unsolicited comment of Roxy (Loganâs no doubt the biggest nerd ever, but sheâd also been playing hockey for over half her life).
Dak then turned straight at James, revealing the bruise blooming around his right eye. âThought you were cool, man,â he spat out, needing to get the last word in. By that point, most of the aggression had worn off, which left room for a tinge of sadness James wasnât sure to trust was real.
It took much convincing, but Roxy managed to shrug off the other girls, insisting they have fun at the dance rather than obsessively cycle through the many ways they could hurt âthat fucking blood sucking asshatâ. She tried to do the same with James, but he wasnât yet ready to face the mob of accidental dates again. And it really seemed like Roxy shouldnât be alone.
So they migrated to Studio B. It was the only place they had access to both private enough for Roxy to collect her thoughts in and hadnât been tainted by the memory ofâughâDak Zevon. At least on Roxyâs part. James stared down the spot through the glass where, just weeks ago, the blood sucking asshat had stood.
âGet in there.â
âWhat?â
James wove around the studio, pushing buttons and plugging wires in what he hoped were the right places (his notes were back at his apartmentâhe didnât think he needed them that night). He did that all while pacifying Roxyâs âthis is stupidâ and âhowâs this supposed to help?â by agreeing to join her in the live room. Finally, the speakers came to life with the synth riff he and Gustavo had laid down just a week ago.
âNow what?â Roxy said over the thumping drum loop.
James adjusted the guitar strap on his shoulder then shot her an incredulous look. âRoxy, weâve got an entire soundproofed room all to ourselves.â He clipped on a capo. âAnd you clearly have some complicated feelings to work out.â
âWhat âcomplicated feelingsâ?â Roxy snorted. âMy first official relationship lasted a little over six hours. Like I even have a right to feel anything. What âfeelingsâ are there to even work out?â
âExactly. Complicated feelings.â James strummed along to the track, a simple I-V-vi-IV placeholder chord progression that would most likely remain in the final version. âCome on! What do you wanna say to him? Arenât you mad? Donât you think you deserve better?â
The drums cut out. James could see all the emotions bubbling up inside Roxy with the swell of the risers. Then, as the beat dropped, the bubble finally burst. âFuck you, eat shit, choke on your saliva!â
âYes! Drive into a big ditch, get bit by piranhas!â James chimed in.
âI swear Iâll do anything that I have to!â
âTo get rid of you!â
The two teens repeated the little verse they came up with somehow even more enthusiastically. They jumped up and down to the beat as they yelled their lungs out. James was a blur of purple, the electric guitar swinging all around. Roxyâs hair unravelled from its done-up state as she headbanged with all her might.
âI swear Iâll do anything that I have to!â Roxy pointed to James to finish it off.
ââTil I forget about youâŚâ It came out as a whisper. The riff played once again, the sawtooth wave sounding much sharper than it did the first time. He clutched the guitar neck a little tighter. It went back to the A-section.
âYâknow what?â Roxy was out of breath from all the jumping they did yet had a big grin on her face. âWhy am I letting him ruin my stupid night? I should be out there on the dance floor, having fun with all our friends!â
Roxy tugged on Jamesâ arm, but was just patient enough to let him put everything away (she tried to help to speed things up, but knew how particular Gustavo was and decided not to). James went to shut the monitor off and felt his heart leap to his throat. Thereâs a new track on the DAW. He mustâve accidentally pressed record in his haste.
âCome on!â Roxy called, already halfway down the hallway.
James relented. Guess itâll have to wait âtil tomorrow.
He quickly locked up and followed Roxy towards the booming bass from Studio A. And as they danced the night away, James wondered how things couldâve gone if all those weeks ago, he had just asked Roxy out on a real date.

~
The past few weeks had been full on. By the end of their first day, the four girls had christened themselves Big Time Rush, the perfect name for the group of hockey players â and Roxy, who didnât quite get the reference but was enthusiastic all the same. James had written a few songs for the group since then, including one to showcase Rocque Recordsâ new talents to the higher ups. Despite that, âsongwriterâ hadnât been added to his official job title just yet â heâs working on it.
It's hard to with Gustavoâs constant threats to send him back to the Midwest if he even thinks of taking the spotlight for himself. Ever the drama queen, Gustavo even made him take a hand over heart oath to do everything âfor the greater good of the girl groupâ (a goofy bit of alliteration, James noted, from the seasoned songwriter).
It was, to be fair, a perfectly reasonable warning to make. After all, James came to the audition with intentions of one day being fawned over by millions of girls worldwide. But heâs actually starting to enjoy working behind the scenes, to see the cogs turn behind all that flash and pizzazz he used to hunger for so badly â he does not envy the non-stop dance practices and vocal exercises the girl group were subjected to.
James easily figured out that he had not been hired for his less than stellar cv. It seemed Kendallâs jabs at Gustavoâs outdated lyrics hit a sore spot. And continue to â Kendall basically laughed in his face when handed the lyrics to âBoy Timeâ, a new Gustavo Rocque original to fit right in with the rest of his Boy- and Girl-filled discography (though the platinum records displayed in the studio leaned more âGirlâ. Guess boybands were more commercially successful â ah, misogyny).
So James had been unofficially appointed as Rocque Recordsâ cool teen consultant. As in all his cool teen input immediately gets shot down by Gustavo, who asserted to have the final say, before his authority gets overridden by all five teens. His short stint doing admin for his momâs then-growing cosmetic business did nothing to prepare James for this job â somehow Gustavo was even more demanding (actually, that wasnât entirely true, nobody could ever beat out Brooke Diamond).
Assisting Big Time Rush, as in what his job actually entails, was slightly easier â only because itâs so much fun. Whoever said girls were more put together than boys were havenât met enough girls â especially not these four. James swore the level of chaos this group can cause rivalled his boys back in Minnesota. Since James left, they havenât really talked much, except for a few texts here and there. Theyâve probably got their own things to worry about.
James was definitely busy. It was no joke trying to balance school and work and writing and what was essentially babysitting (ignore the fact that heâs responsible for a fifth of the chaos in their wake). Not to mention building and maintaining a reputation among his peers at the Palm Woods. Itâs proving to be a lot harder than he thought. Despite all the business trips his mom took all over the Midwest, James had only ever lived in Duluth â heâd never been the new guy. And while he loved hanging around the girl group (plus Jo and Camille on occasion), he was ready to branch out. Maybe get some guy friends.
And so the perfect opportunity arose when James was left in charge of a recording session with Hollywoodâs latest fascination Dak Zevon.
âSo,â James said, making conversation as he set up Studio B. âHow does it feel to have a mob of girls chasing after you?â
The Varsity Vampire star stood patiently in the centre of the live room looking effortlessly cool. Iconic teen idol photographer Marcos Del Posey could get a drive-by snapshot of him right that moment and itâd be good enough for a Pop Tiger centrefold. âIâm sure you could answer that question,â he said. âYou must have girls chasing you all the time, with your looks.â
James almost dropped the very important and very expensive equipment from his hands. Sure heâs looking for a new friend, but if thatâs the trajectory their relationship was going, James wasnât gonna object.
But surely Dak Zevon didnât mean for it to come out that way. Especially not to him. So James laughed it off.
âThe only time that happened they were all holding hockey sticks and had every intention of hurting me.â James turned straight at the star. âAnd they did.â
Dak Zevon chuckled along at Jamesâ misfortune. âWell, good thing they left your pretty face intact.â
Soon after arriving in LA, James very quickly realised Minnesota pretty is nothing compared to Hollywood pretty (the Jennifersâ rejection of him on his first day still slightly stung, not gonna lie). So if seasoned actor Dak Zevon was calling him pretty, thatâs not just an observation â Dak Zevonâs actually flirting.
At this realisation, James felt his apparently pretty face go red and busied himself with something out of the starâs view.
James was the flirt â he wasnât used to being on the other side.
The rest of the session ran as smooth as an amateur like James was able to make it. He was thankful Gustavo made him take notes during every Big Time Rush recording, even if it felt a little repetitive after a while. There was a little hold up as the girls begged for his help in Studio A, but otherwise his first solo gig went well. If Gustavo had a heart (which James was slowly suspecting to be true), James felt like heâd be proud.
âAnd thatâs a wrap! Great work today.â James hoped he was saying the right things. He suspected Gustavoâs usual script of âthat wasnât horrible,â wasnât intended for world-famous musical movie leads paying big sums of money to use the studio (actually, knowing GustavoâŚ). James entered the live room to pack everything up. âLet me just shoot one quick text and⌠hey!â
James managed to press send before his phone got snatched away. He looked up to see Dak Zevon tapping away at it.
âYou mentioned only working here for a month, right? You know, I know a thing or two about the industry if youâre looking for some tips,â he said, handing the phone back. The screen now showed a text to an unknown number reading âDak ďâ. James could only stare at it. âMaybe we could discuss it overââ
BOOM!
There wasnât any time to dissect the starâs intentions as a flood of fangirls breached the studio doors and filled every inch of the control room (seriously, security needed to step up their game). Luckily, before the mob could locate their target beyond the glass, Katie came to the rescue and led them through a maze of vents (she was being very cool about it despite being one of those girls just hours ago).
They emerged into Gustavoâs office. It was almost as chaotic as the scene they just fled from, with discarded frilly bonnets littering the floor, Gustavo & Kelly plugging desk lamps in opposite corners, poofy petticoats filling out the bottom half of the room. The girls had already shed the equally poofy jackets Griffin had them wear, revealing the clothes they initially chose to get photographed in.
âJames! Youâre here!â Logan cried out.
To be fair, it had been a stressful afternoon on the girlsâ end (and perhaps even Gustavo and Kelly, with the orange jumpsuits they were sporting). It was unfortunate, yet unsurprising when it comes to the four of them, what was meant to be a simple photoshoot turned into⌠all that.
Roxy had just finished redoing Loganâs braid when she noticed the new arrivals â in particular, Dak Zevon. Earlier, she had been the only one of the four excited to be in the same building as the teen celebrity, endlessly rehearsing all the things sheâd say to him if they crossed paths. Now they have, and sheâs stunned into silence.
âHey,â Dak said.
âHi,â Roxy squeaked, suddenly shy.
James glanced between the two of them. His gut churned. Was thereâŚ? A look at Katieâs amused expression confirmed it â there was definitely some kind of vibe going on with those two.
âJames, catch!â He snapped out of it fast enough to see a DSLR flying towards him. It landed unharmed in his hands thanks to Kendallâs amazing hand-eye coordination (though they would have to talk later about throwing expensive equipment â the damages the teens were responsible for must bite them in the ass someday). James adjusted the camera settings as the girls finished up some last-minute lint brushing and hair smoothing. Finally, through the viewfinder, the girlsâ top-halves were practically picture perfect.
âSmile pretty pretty!â
James sighed. Guess this pretty boy got it pretty wrong.
-
James sulked for the rest of the day.
And the day after that.
And the day after that.
He couldn't even get excited to receive the first few copies of next month's Pop Tiger â which Katie and Roxy immediately tore through, the former promptly asking to get it signed because âthis will be worth so much money when youâre famousâ. As everyone at the Palm Woods pool gathered round to congratulate the group on their first centrefold feature, James stared daggers at the opposite side of the poster, which was graced with a flawlessly airbrushed portrait ofâughâDak Zevon.
James knew glaring at a picture was ultimately useless, but he just needed to do something to stop feeling⌠feelings (he's a hormonal teenage boy with poor emotional regulation skills, sue him). He tried penning a new song, which he decided should never see the light of day. He tried dancing it off to loud music, ignoring the thin walls and stacking noise complaints. He even let Camille drag him to some wizard audition, Gustavoâs repetitive threats be damned.
At one point, James was even desperate enough to sample a dose of delusionâno, not delusion, logical reasoning. Because a look shouldn't mean anything, James reassured himself, channelling his inner Logan Mitchell. Just because a boy and a girl looked at each other it shouldn't mean that something was going on between them â this wasnât a cheesy overdramatic teen sitcom. And maybe Hollywood actor Dak Zevon gives his number out to just about anyone. Which seemed to be terrible, security and privacy wise. But hey, James wasnât gonna judge. Plus, Dak even offered to⌠James wasnât exactly sure what his offer was, but the fact there was an offer in the first place must meanâ
Buzz.
James scrambled to get his phone outâa new text.
And this time it wasnât Kelly with next weekâs Big Time Rush schedules.
Nor was it Carlota with a stunt video she wanted to recreate.
And it wasnât Katie asking James to steal more snacks from the Rocque Records staff kitchen.
It was a text from the still unnamed contact he had been pretending not to look at all afternoon.
Thinking of bringing roxy to chez fancee. What do u think? D.
What does he think? James scoffed. What does he think?! Not even a Hello, James! Or even a It was really nice meeting you. No Thank you for the recording session! Itâs Dak Zevon btw even though i dialled in my own number into your phone! â none of that. Just straight onto What do u think? Jamesâ thumbs darted all around the phone keyboard. Bigshot Hollywood actor Dak Zevon wants to know what James thinks? Oh, James will tell him exactly what he thinks. James thinks that itâs soâ
Cool. Sounds fancy. Have fun!
James huffed and practically threw his phone down. He was mad â not an asshole.
Whoosh!
The black rubber disc whizzed past Kendallâs shoulder, completely missing the two planters that acted as their goal, and smacked the exterior wall of the Palm Woodsâhard. Kendallâs head whipped back to Jamesâ heaving form. Her mouth twisted into an unreadable expression before she ran to retrieve the puck.
James ran a hand through his sweaty hair and let out a breath. His DIAMOND jersey stuck to his back despite the chill evening air. It was the third time he missed his shotâout of only three times he had control of the puck to even shoot it. Heâd blame it on the fact that he was an ice hockey player, so of course Kendall would have the upper hand. Then Kendall would jeer at him, but would entertain his idea of a rematch on skates, in which she will gladly destroy him once again.
But Kendall didnât say anything. Maybe for the same reason she was down here playing parking lot hockey with James, rather than up there in 2J helping Roxy get ready for her⌠outing. But then again, Kendall was never one for dressing up and makeovers, as evidenced by her almost daily uniform of a flannel over jeans and perpetually unbrushed ponytail.
Theyâve never been the type to talk their feelings out, and they werenât about to start just after a month of hanging out again. Unless it was a passionate rant on how their respective hockey teams shouldnât have lost their last games, their conversations usually went a little like the following:
âWhatâs up with you?â
âNothing.â
âCome on.â
âNothing! Iâm pre-menstrual, is that what you wanna hearâow!â
âNot funny, James.â
Kendall set the puck between them. With a nod from James, they counted down and the game restarted. James had to really focus to gain control of the puck once again, even though Kendall was definitely throwing the game in his favour (he pretended not to notice). He had a clear view of the goal. One straight shot and James could finally claim one win under his belt. Exceptâ
Honk!
Kendall scored.
James groaned and lightly hit his head on one end of his hockey stick. His head whipped round to cuss out, or at least shoot a pointed glare at, whoever was responsible for yet another lost game. James finally spotted the silver Chevy Camaro that had just parked. The car door clicked open to revealâugh, of course.
âSorry, James!â Dak Zevon said, greeting James with a bro hug. âDidnât mean to make you lose, man.â
âItâs whatever. I was losing anyway.â James swallowed his annoyance. He figured it best not to burn bridges before theyâre even built, if he wants to have a long career in Hollywood. If not for his own sake, for the girl groupâs future.
James introduced Kendall and Dak. For real this time. Last time their meeting got cut short as the same stampede of fangirls rerouted straight into Gustavoâs office after Katieâs cool finally broke (James was proud she even lasted that long). Dak had ducked back down into the vents and managed to escape undetected, hence him still standing in one piece.
Dak shifted his weight to his other foot. âSo are you twoâŚ?â
Kendall snorted. âMe and him? No, ew. As if weâd everâow!â Kendall righted herself before crashing her shoulder right back into James.
âSeriously? Ew?â James whined, rubbing his side, as if he hadnât started it.
Not that he ever thought about Kendall that way. And he doubted Kendall ever thought of him like that either. He suggested it once in second grade, after being in the same room as his mom who was watching some movie, to get married if they havenât found anyone else by the age of 20 (which, when he thought of it, was way too young to get married at all). Kendall laughed at him then, maybe also said ew. But that evening, his ego was bruised enough without yet another reminder of how undesirable he was.
Kendall snickered. âSorry, but no.â She turned to Dak. âWeâre definitely not.â
âOh,â Dak said. âGood to know.â
The double doors of the Palm Woods entrance swung open. Roxy emerged from them in a deep blue dress, her hair curled and face made up. On either side of her were Logan and Carlota, both of whom James felt werenât the dress up types either. Last he heard, Carlota was occupied with getting rid of the smell of cured meat off her helmet, and Logan blood off her math textbook â it had been an eventful day, to say the least. So James had a feeling Jo and Camille were involved, if all the squealing through the walls were any indication.
The two escorts were shooting all sorts of advice into Roxyâs ears: to call if anything goes wrong, to bring home any leftovers, to remind her of the stapler in her purse for any wardrobe malfunctions, or as a weapon â Roxy shushed them when she noticed Dak Zevon approaching. Logan and Carlota sent her off with good lucks before falling in line beside James and Kendall.
James looked away as the two greeted each other, instead paying very close attention to the hockey puck by his feet. It seemed to be an intimate moment he wasnât meant to witness. The other girls seemed to think otherwise, huddled together very obviously trying to listen in, all giddy for their friend. It must be nice, to have so many people cheering on the success of your romantic pursuits.
James instinctively looked up at the sound of a car door slamming shut. Dak was circling round from the passenger side of his silver Chevy. Dak was looking right at him. Dak smiled. James smiled back.
At that moment, James decided, that if it was anyone else Dak Zevonâs bringing to dinner, heâs glad itâs Roxy.
