The streets were emptier in the storm’s wake, gray and littered with debris, broken glass and flooding. Only the most essential of business were still operating in the days after, and only at a limited capacity. Elistra wasn’t worried, the town would pick itself back up, just as it always did. The community was a strong one, and a tightness had finally released its grip on Elistra’s heart now that she couldn't see the dark clouds looming on the horizon. She knew this didn’t fix everything, didn’t change the fact that sirens and mermaids were pouring into Port Vale and threatening to start their fighting anew, but she at least felt better prepared to deal with it all. And it was a relief, knowing the pendant was gone. One less thing for them to fight over.
But Elistra was startled from her thoughts by a tug of the leash she had wrapped several times around her wrist. Excalabur, as she’d come to call him, was a massive dog who seemingly did not know the capacity of his size and strength. He tugged her towards a large, murky puddle and began trying to sniff it.
“No. Excalibur, no. That is not good for you.” She pulled back on the leash, trying to steer him towards a safer part of the sidewalk. In her satchel there was a stack of flyers informing the reader that a stray newfoundland dog had been found and that the owner should contact Beacon Chapel in order to retrieve him. Walking him through the streets of Port Vale and hanging up the fliers was the only way Elistra could think to notify the dog’s owners of his safety besides putting an ad out in the paper.
As she tried to wrestle Excalibur away from the puddle she looked up to see that someone was exiting the library. “Kyree!” she called, waving. Excalibur, having also spotted Kyree, started trotting along on a direct path towards her, excited even in his old age. Elistra could only be pulled along. “Hey. Come on. Calm down. You’ve seen people before. Be polite, Excalibur.” She glanced up to try and discern if Kyree might have been upset by the sight of a small black bear coming at her and to determine if she’d have to throw her arms around Excalibur and wrestle him away from her friend if she didn’t like dogs. “I’m sorry, Kyree, he’s very friendly and gentle.”
