Aphrodite: What did you love most about the place you grew up? What about it did you love the least?

I loved that I had a lot of freedom growing up, but at the same time hated it. We weren’t a family that ate meals together or shared how our day was. I used to watch my friends negotiate with their parents about us going out or doing anything and the concept was completely alien to me. Funny thing was I was usually the sensible one of the friendship group, guess you’re not as keen to push boundaries when you don’t really have anyone to answer to but yourself lol! I can’t wait to say to my teenage daughter, "where do you think you’re going?!" While trying not to giggle at myself, all while turning to my husband and whispering, I’m parenting! 😂

The house itself I grew up in was great, I had my own room, could blast my own music to my hearts content, we had a pool and I had a giant dog as a pet who weighed almost as much as me. I just didn’t like that I lived far enough from my friends that I had to use taxis to go see them. They were much more affordable back then, but it still chewed into the money I was making at work. My best friend used to pay half for me as incentive to get my lazy arse over to her place, but I also knew her mum would be cooking something awesome for dinner so that always sealed the deal too lol.

Hades: If you could find out the date of your death, would you want to know?

Once again I'm so sorry I've taken so long to answer!

I’ve only ever been on one date in my entire life. It’s up there with one of the worst things I’ve EVER had to do. I only did it because I had friends who encouraged me to give it a try, like it was supposed to be some right of passage thing.

It was SO AWKWARD. I’ve never been so uncomfortable. From the moment he picked me up from my house til it ended I wanted to throw up, have an outer body experience so I could be somewhere else, have the guts to say to him, “I’m so sorry but I can’t just CAN’T DO THIS.” There was nothing wrong with him, he was a really nice guy, bought me dinner, paid for a movie, treated me like royalty. I’ve never hated anything so much in my life 🤣 I just didn’t get it, it felt like I was on display to be judged all night on appearance, personality, attitude. Blergh! 😖 I just spent the whole night sitting there like a stunned mullet. My favourite part of the night was getting out of his car and giving him my last big fake smile. Never spoke to the poor boy again and felt terrible about it for months years. I still think about that night and cringe!

Any other relationships I've been in were with people I met slowly and just started hanging out with a lot. Much slower, calmer way to get to know someone.

I’m lying, I’ve been on two dates, BUT! I didn’t know the one with my husband was a first date. Sneaky sneaky boy! I thought we were going to the Tim Burton exhibition as friends since I’d kind of known him through another friend for years without really knowing him at all, and he’d told me he really wanted to see it but didn’t know anyone he could go with. I also thought he was in a relationship with his housemate, so I was safe right? Wrong! Totally pulled the moves on me without me registering, I accused him of trying it on when he has a girlfriend. Yeah... no girlfriend lol, and I was so comfortable because I didn’t think it was a date, I’d shared all my Tim Burton knowledge, talked about why I like his stuff so much, essentially blah blah blahed all night, argued with him, and had some in depth talk about art. He thought I was loud, ridiculous, insane and perfect for him.

Guess he was right, here we are 10 years later 😁❤

overgrowth 🌿 - what’s a fact about yourself you’ve never had the opportunity to tell?

When I was a kid I was shy and awkward, had hardly any friends and was terrified of what others thought of me. I read giant novels too advanced for me so I could escape the real world and everything about it that scared me. I was really into the macabre but everyone I knew thought that was weird and wrong. It wasn’t until mid way through high school something in me snapped and I chose to embrace my inner “weirdo” and realised no one was really interested in what I did or didn’t do, I started dressing in goth and the confidence that came with my new big black boots and purple eyeliner was a real boost.

echo 🕳️ - what’s a habit you want to start?

Start doing my hobbies again and try to find more time to read! I am adjusting to being a new mother and I think it’s important to find a good balance between motherhood and my personal interests. I’ve seen some friends lose their minds trying to just be perfect mothers and end up being resentful and depressed. I want to share these hobbies with my daughter when she’s older too. My garden has been neglected for far too long!

Poseidon: Where is your favorite place to go on a weekday afternoon when you have no plans or obligations?

This would have to be the National Gallery of Victoria or the Melbourne Museum or both! I love it when it’s a weekday and no one is around, you can spend ages admiring your favourite art pieces without heads getting in the way, you can get up close to the dinosaurs without feeling obliged to let other people’s kids in front of you (fairs fair, they’re shorter and weekends belong to the youth). And both have excellent outdoor areas to lounge around with a good book and good music. And VERY few people visit either between 9 and 5 weekdays.

Ares: Do you still remember arguments or upsets from over 5 years ago? Do they still bother you today?

Yep, I’m a Scorpio. Memory like an elephant. Ridiculously stubborn. And I like my quarrels to have purpose and reason. Pointless squabbles never acknowledged again will gnaw at the back of my brain and fester.

This is my number one favourite Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds song. I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t use it as our first-dance song at our wedding. Husband talked me out of it and by the time we were picking music last minute I was too tired to argue. We did use Into My Arms for walking down the aisle though, so at least I have that.
