Channel your inner (or outer jew) at Kutsher’s TriBeCa
I am a wasp to the core, but have a deep love for Jewish food (minus gefilte fish). Last Sunday, I decided to give Kutsher’s TriBeCa or “KT” a try and brought my friend (who is in the tribe) along for the ride.
Where: Kutsher's Tribeca (186 Franklin Street at Greenwich Street, TriBeCa).
About Kutshers: KT serves modern Jewish food that even gentiles can enjoy. Opened in November 2011 by Zach Kutsher and restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow, KT is an extension of the renowned Kutsher’s Country Club resort in the Catskills. Known for their brunch, KT’s expansive menu has something for everyone. It includes classic Jewish staples with a contemporary twist, such as Matzo Brei with berry compote and Borscht with roast duck. However, what really impressed me was their desserts: all homemade, unique and most involved ice cream (my favorite food). The price point was a tad high, but to be expected given the location (I think it’s $5 every time you breathe down there).
The Vibe: Couples, adults and strollers (consistent with TriBeCa’s general population, aside from the bachelor hedge funders).
The Space: Large and in charge at 140 seats, KT has booths, two tops and circular tables to accommodate family style. The décor is casual art deco: light wood, whitewash walls, leather seats and gold light fixtures.
What we ordered:
The Reuben – (Emmentaler, sauerkraut and Thousand Island Dressing on seeded rye for $16.50) – One of their signature dishes, this heavy sammy is made with Kutsher’s legendary pastrami (thick and packed with flavor).
Challah French Toast (Fresh berries, house-made whipped cream and local maple syrup for $16) – I love when people disguise dessert as a main dish. IMO, few people do Challah French toast well and KT hit it out of the park. Side note: the homemade whipped cream was fantastic.
Smoked Fish Platter (Pastrami Salmon, Nova, Smoked Whitefish, Pickled Herring, Sable, Hot Smoked Salmon Salad with bagel, chive cream cheese, tomatoes, onions and capers – Pick three for $23, the works is $29. Add Japanese “caviar” for $6) – It’s is your standard bagel and lox on amphetamines. A little pricy for a brunch dish, but a good lesson in all things Jewish.
Black & White Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich (With vanilla ice cream and dark chocolate dip for $9) – This was hands down one of my favorite desserts I have ever had. Made with homemade everything, the chances this will not make my weekly Food Porn Friday is slim to very slim.
