The tension between the two council members stayed heated, untouched, and for who knows how long â irrevocably silent that everybody around them thought they despised each other. It wasn't entirely false. Maybe that 'hate' was something much deeper.
Good evening, to whom this may concern.
I've wrote this email to you in regards to an incident that had happened between us this semester. One that included proximity too intimate for two colleagues.
I sincerely apologize â that line of action from you must have stemmed from something I had did â that served solely as punishment. I am aware that our partnership, from the outside, looks like it threatens your position as the President of the Council.
I assure you â you are, and will stay â the Saikou Heiress, the President, and the leader we all look up to.
I will stay as your vice president in command, yours truly.
To my dear, superior: Saikou, Megami.
"My dear, superior."
Was it an accidental mis-click for you to add a comma before the word 'superior?' Or had you meant it, Kamenaga?
Throughout all these years, I have seen you as an equal, my right hand in command, a.. partner. In a colleague point of view.
That show of intimacy was not a punishment. You must hate me that much to see my love as punishment, Vice President.
I kissed you because I wanted to. I look at you and I do not see someone below me, I see someone who is fully capable of holding her place.
I had always admired that aspect of you, Kuroko.
I always had.
Do not take my affection as a sign of pity.
I want you to take it as wholeheartedly, and as pure as possible. What tension between us has always been a taut string, and I've been destined to break it.
Signed by yours, truly: Saikou, Megami.

Kagami didnât mean to get so drunk, really. Itâs just that Alex had bought alcohol, and Himuro was some kind of magical bartender, mixing gin slings (why had Alex bought gin? Who drinks gin?) like it was second nature to him. Heâd had beer a couple times before, also courtesy of Alex, and knew that he could handle about four drinks with no real problem. Call him a lightweight, but at least he knew his limits.
It turns out, beer drinks and gin drinks are very different. Kagami found himself uncomfortably drunk. Sloppily drunk. Just a real mess of a drunk.
âTaiga, are you okay?â Himuro asked.
Kagami blinked slowly. âMistakes were made.â
Himuro frowned. âI should have cut you off.â
âBros donât let bros get sloppy drunk,â Kagami said, frowning right back at him.
âYou are remarkably self-aware,â Himuro said.
Kagami was beginning to wonder how much Himuro had imbibed himself. His voice was about the same, but his movements were a little slower than his usual lightnihg-quick reflexes. Â âI miss Kuroko,â Kagami said. He plopped down on the couch and frowned harder.
âTaiga. Heâs right there.â
Kuroko was either smarter than Kagami, more skeptical of Himuroâs bartending skills, or wasnât a fan of gin (which probably also fell under âsmarter than Kagamiâ), because he was still stone-cold sober.
Kagami looked over at Kuroko and his face lit up. Kuroko was standing across the room, deep in conversation with Kiyoshi and Furihata.
âKuroko!â he yelled across the room. âCome here!â
Kuroko made his excuses and hurried over to check on Kagami. âKagami-kun, are you all right?â he asked when he got there.
âI am pretty sure you poisoned yourself,â Kuroko said. âItâs the alcohol, you see. You drank a good bit of it.â
âI drank a perfectly normal amount for a big guy. But thenâŚNow Iâm drunk.â
He wasnât the only one. Kuroko looked over to where Murasakibara was asleep on the floor. But then again, Murasakibara was known for consuming anything that got near him, and heâd been able to pregame by charming his boyfriend into giving him drinks for âpractice bartending.â He also noticed that Kiyoshi was flushed and grinning more than usual.
And then there was Akashi.
He walked over to Kuroko and slung an arm around his shoulders.
âKuroko! Is everything all right?â
He grinned at him and Kagami.
âKagami! Are you all right? You look a bit out of sorts. Is there anything I can do?â
âIâm drunk,â Kagami said. He frowned at Akashi. âYouâre drunk.â Kagami did a lot of frowning while he was drunk, it seemed.
âI may have imbibed, yes,â Akashi said. âYouâre one to talk. You seem pretty out of it.â He moved from where heâd draped himself around Kuroko to put a hand on Kagamiâs head. âI donât say this enough, but I value your friendship. I hope that you are not overly intoxicated.â
Kagami looked at Kuroko in horror. âWho is this, and what has he done with Akashi?â
âIâll have you know Iâm just fine,â Akashi said.
Kagami looked around the room, desperately wishing for someone to come disentangle the obviously very drunk Akashi from them. His eyes landed on Midorima, who was tangled up with Takao on the couch.
âOi!â Kagami yelled. âKeep your shirt on!â
Midorima sat up, blushing furiously. âTakao I told youââ
âLoosen up,â Takao said. âItâs a party! Donât be so serious all the time.â
Takao was bright red for another reason: the gin slings. He climbed out of Midorimaâs lap and took a sip of one.
âDo you regret the chaos youâve unleashed?â Kagami turned and yelled at Himuro, who was attempting to rouse his giant boyfriend.
âYes. Yes I do.â
âDo you regret it enough to not get us drunk next time?â
Himuro grinned. âAbsolutely not.â
âDonât worry so much,â Akashi said. âEverything is going to be fine.â
Kagami turned to Kuroko. âIâm going to wake up to a bunch of hungover Miracles in my apartment, arenât I?â
âAbsolutely, yes you are.â Kuroko said. âYou should have asked me that before you let Himuro-kun start mixing drinks.â
âTo be fair, itâs not like he actually asked me. He just shoved one in my face, like âhere, Taiga, drink this Taigaâ and then suddenly there was Seirin and the entire Generation of Miracles in my apartment drunk off their multicolored asses.â
âWell I hope that you are able to get them all out of your apartment tomorrow with minimal property damage,â Kuroko said, holding back laughter.
âWhy arenât you drunk, anyway?â Kagami asked. âYouâre so tiny. Real tiny. Bet youâre a total lightweight. I bet I could bench-press you. Why havenât I tried to bench-press you, Kuroko?â
âPlease do not.â
âHere, câmere. Why havenât I tried to lift you? I wanna lift you. I wanna do lots of things.â
âKagami-kun, please come with me,â Kuroko said. âBefore you embarass yourself in front of everyone.â
âAm I embarassing you?â Kagami asked.
âNot yet,â Kuroko said. âBut I suspect you are about to, and I am concerned you may say something youâd rather not say in front of Akashi.â
Akashi waved lazily from where heâd returned to being wound around Kurokoâs neck.
âSo those two get to suck face all they want and I canât say nothing?â Kagami asked. âAll I was gonna say is youâre nice, and pretty, andââ
âAnd taking you outside!â Kuroko finished.
Kise wolf-whistled as Kuroko disentangled himself from Akashi, grabbed Kagamiâs wrist, and dragged him outside onto the balcony.
âI was just gonna say you smell nice,â Kagami said.
Kuroko turned red enough that if Kagami didnât know better, heâd think heâd been drinking too.
âSo why are you sober anyhow?â Kagami asked.
âI thought that someone had to be,â Kuroko said, shrugging. âI have seen my friends drunk before and it is not a pretty picture, overall.â
Kagami thought back to the scene in his apartment and nodded.
âFair enough,â he said. âBut next time youâre getting drunk. âS not fair Iâm the only one thinking âbout how nice you are, and pretty, and handsome, andâŚâ he trailed off. âLotsa stuff.â
âThank you, Kagami-kun.â
âNo, no, no,â Kagami said. âCall me Taiga. Weâve been through more ân enough for that.â
âYouâre very welcome,â Kagami said. âThe most welcome. You deserve all the nice compliments and things. People should be nicer to you, Kuroko.â
âYou can call me Tetsuya,â Kuroko said in a moment of impossible courage.
âTetsuya,â Kagami said. The flush on his face wasnât only from the alcohol. âPeople should be nicer to you.â
âI think they just donât notice me,â Kuroko said.
Kagamiâs frown deepened. âWell they should. Because youâre the best. And I really like you.â
Kuroko smiled. âThank you, KagaâTaiga-kun.â
Kagami shook his head. âNo, you donât get it. I like you, Tetsuya.â
âYouâŚâ Kurokoâs eyes widened, but he rearranged his face into a mask of impassivity. âAre you sure you want to do this while youâre drunk?â
âI sure as hell wasnât gonna do it sober,â Kagami said. âSo Iâll do it drunk if I have to.â
âYou better remember this tomorrow,â Kuroko said.
âArenât you going to respond to my confession?â Kagami said. His frown returned. âUnless⌠Oh no. Did I ruin everything? Did I ruin our friendship? Do you not like me? I hoped you did, but I should have known that there was no way you couldââ
âStop talking, KâTaiga-kun,â Kuroko said. âPlease. Youâre working yourself up.â
âBut I ruined our friendship! Please just let me be friends with you, even if you donât lââ
âI love you,â Kuroko said. Even he was shocked by how frankly the words came out, and stone-cold sober to boot.
âYou what?â Kagami said. âYouâŚreally?â
âI love you, Taiga-kun. I have since the day we first played Kaijo.â
Kagami stared at Kuroko with something that looked a lot like wonder.
âCanâŚcan I kiss you?â he asked.
âYouâre drunk,â Kuroko said. âYour breath smells like a still and I canât kiss you knowing you might regret it tomorrow.â
âIâm not going to regret it tomorrow,â Kagami said.
âI hope not,â Kuroko said. âBut still. Youâre drunk. Iâm not going to kiss you.â
Kagami wrapped Kuroko in his arms. âWell, I can still do this.â
He pulled Kuroko close and nestled his head on top of Kurokoâs, pressing a kiss to pale blue hair.
âI love you, Tetsuya,â he said. âCan I kiss you tomorrow?â
Kuroko smiled. âOf course you can. If you still want to kiss me in the morning, you can kiss me as much as you want.â
Kagami pushed Kuroko back and looked him in the eyes, holding onto his shoulders.
âAll I want? Really?â
âAll you want. Really.â
âPinky swear?â Kagami said, holding up his pinky.
Kuroko smiled. âPinky swear.â He linked pinkies with Kagami and Kagami shook their hands.
âYou two making out out there?â Aomine said, pushing the door to the balcony open. âYou better be, dipshits. Stop pining andââ He looked at Kagami and Kuroko staring into each otherâs eyes, grinning, and grimaced. âOkay, I didnât actually mean it!â
âMidorima-kun is making out with Takao-kun and you did not protest.â Kuroko shrugged.
âThatâs because heâs a kissy drunk and I donât want him kissing me.â
âWait, are we going to make out?â Kagami said.
Aomine gaped at them. âWait a second. You mean you actuallyâ I mean, you reallyâGood on you, Tetsu!â
âActually, Taiga-kun was the one to confess,â Kuroko said.
âWow, first names and everything,â Aomine said. âWhatâd I miss? Wait, actually, donât tell me.â
âI got drunk, I confessed, KâTetsuya confessed back, and now weâreâwait, Tetsuya. What are we?â
âBoyfriends, I think?â
âWell we sure arenât girlfriends,â Kagami said, grinning. âNow weâre boyfriends, and Tetsuya said that tomorrow I canââ
Kuroko slapped his hand over Kagamiâs mouth. âMake yourself a nutritious breakfast to stave off the hangover!â
âYouâre going to make out,â Aomine said. âThanks for sharing, gross, I hate it.â
âStop trying to pick fights over me,â Kuroko said. âItâs childish and embarassing and Aomine-kun doesnât see me like that anyway.â
âHeâs just jealous that I won,â Kagami said. âWho wouldnât see you like that?â
Kuroko shrugged. âMost people.â
âWell, theyâre all clueless,â Kagami said. âI donât know why they wouldnât see in you what I see in you.â He wrapped Kuroko back up in his arms.
âWelp! Thatâs enough of this absolutely cavity-inducing public display of intense devotion for me,â Aomine said. âIâm going back to where the worst display of affection is Midorima and Takao sucking face on the couch.â
âOh gross,â Kagami said. âTetsuya is way cuter than that.â He kissed Kurokoâs hair again, and Kuroko beamed.
âWait a second,â Kagami said. âThatâs my couch. This is my apartment!â
âGood job, Bakagami,â Aomine said. âThis is your apartment.â
âWell Iâd prefer they donât make out on my couch!â
âWould you prefer they make out on your floor? Because I donât think you should be encouraging them to get any more horizontal than they already are.â
âTetsuyaaaaa,â Kagami whined. âWill you kick your friends out of my apartment?â
âFine,â Aomine said. âI get the hint. Iâll leave you lovebirds alone.â
âFirst,â Kuroko said as he closed the balcony door,â theyâre your friends too.â
âTheyâre your friends when theyâre being shitheads.â
âSecond, how do you expect them to get home when theyâre this drunk?â
âLet overly-affectionate Akashi figure it out. Heâs resourceful. Iâm sure he can handle it.â
âThird, what about Himuro-kun? Who all am I kicking out of your apartment?â
âHeâs got a place to stay! He and his giant boyfriend can stay there!â
âSo you want everyone gone?â
Kagami pouted. âItâs too loud and I just want to go to bed.â
âIâll see what I can do,â Kuroko said, âBut Murasakibara-kun might be hard to wake up. Then Iâll head home so you can get some rest.â
âNo,â Kagami said, catching Kurokoâs wrist as he turned to go inside. âStay.â He looked at Kuroko pleadingly. âSnuggle.â
Kuroko turned around and went inside at lightning speed. âAll right!â he said, louder than Kagami had ever heard him. âEverybody out! Wake up and go home!â
âBut Kurokoââ Akashi said from where heâd wrapped himself around Kise. Kise was just standing there talking to Kiyoshi, completely disregarding the koala clinging to his side.
âBut Kuroko nothing,â Kagami said, coming in from the balcony. âIt is cold out there and I want to go to bed!â
He took Kurokoâs hand and Kiseâs gaze almost visibly zoomed in on the two of them.
âWait,â he said. âYou twoâŚfinally?â
Kagami nodded, and cheerfully said, âGet out of my apartment so I can cuddle my boyfriend.â
This wasnât exactly how theyâd envisioned making the announcement, and he was pretty sure some of them wouldnât remember it tomorrow. But it was a good way, anyway.
Eventually they were able to sweep the last few stragglers out of his apartment. Kiyoshi, who somehow became even jollier when drunk, volunteered to stay and help until everyone was left, and then started cleaning up a bit before he gave them each a long, warm hug goodbye, congratulating them enthusiastically on their newfound relationship, and headed out. It was definitely the second-best hug Kagami had had in a long time, first place obviously going to the hug he'd given Kuroko after theyâd confessed to each other.
âSo,â Kagami said once the door closed behind Kiyoshi. âSnuggles?â
âSnuggles,â Kuroko said, nodding. âBut brush your teeth first.â
âYes sir!â Kagami said, making for the bathroom. âDid you bring your pajamas?â
âI have no idea where my bag went in the chaos,â Kuroko confessed.
âThatâs fine,â Kagami said. âYou can wear some of my stuff.â
He secretly thrilled at Kuroko wearing his clothes, though he wouldnât admit it out loud. He turned from his current trajectory towards the bathroom and went into his room, where he rummaged through the drawers to find some basketball shorts heâd worn in middle school and a t-shirt that would be too large on Kuroko by far. He handed them to Kuroko, grabbing a set of pajamas of his own, and went to brush his teeth.
âYou can change while Iâm in the bathroom,â Kagami said. âIf you like. Or you can change in the bathroom when Iâm done.â
Kuroko nodded. âThank you, Taiga-kun.â
Kagami brushed his teeth and changed into his own pajamas.
âYou know where your toothbrush is?â Kagami said, walking out of the bathroom to find Kuroko still in his own clothes. At some point, Kuroko had stayed over enough times that it made more sense to just leave him a toothbrush at Kagamiâs. Plus, it made Kagamiâs toothbrush look a little less lonely in the holder to have a blue one beside it.
Wow. That was pretty gay of him, in retrospect. Then again, he was gay, so what harm was it, really? And besides, itâd paid off. Because Kuroko would be more comfortable tonight. While they shared a bed. And cuddled.
He was going to have to send Himuro a fruit basket for getting him drunk enough to admit his feelings.
âI know,â Kuroko said, and smiled at Kagami. âYou get situated, okay? Iâll be right back.â
Kagami climbed into bed and yawned. He carefully situated himself, leaving enough space for Kuroko. He wondered if Kuroko would want to be the big spoon or the little spoon. Their sizes said little spoon, but was Kuroko really a little spoon kind of person? Kagami mused about it until Kuroko opened the door to the bedroom, dressed in Kagamiâs clothes.
âYou look nice,â Kagami said, face red again. He did. There was something primal in Kagamiâs gut that was soothed by seeing Kuroko wearing his clothes, the shirt hanging off his shoulders and exposing his collarbones.
Kuroko ducked his head. âThank you.â
He climbed into bed next to Kagami, who asked, âHow do you want to do this?â
Kuroko situated himself so his head was resting on Kagamiâs chest, and pulled one of Kagamiâs arms so it wrapped around him.
âThatâs very nice,â Kagami said, âThank you.â He mentally smacked himself for how he must have sounded. Thanking his boyfriend for cuddling with him? âPlease donât judge me Tetsuya; I am still so drunk right now.â
âI know,â Kuroko said, and stretched up to peck his cheek. âYouâre doing amazing.â
Kagami blushed. âThank you,â he said. âI love you.â
âI love you too, Taiga-kun,â Kuroko said. He reached over and turned off the light. âRest time now.â
âSweet dreams, Tetsuya,â Kagami whispered.
âSweet dreams.â
The next morning, Kagami woke to an empty bed, and wondered if it was all an elaborate dream. Then the sunset his his eyes and he grimaced, distracted from his thoughts by the pain.
âGood morning, Taiga-kun,â Kuroko said quietly, walking into the room holding a water bottle and two asprin.
âI love you,â Kagami said, popping the asprin into his mouth and swallowing them. âYouâre so good to me.â
âYou deserve it,â Kuroko said. âI made breakfast?â He phrased it as a question, in case Kagami didnât feel up to it.
Kagamiâs stomach rebelled at the thought of food, but he knew that heâd feel better once he got something in him.
âYouâre an angel.â
âI thought I was a phantom,â Kuroko said.
âYou can be more than one thing. Like Iâm a basketball star and a lovestruck idiot.â
âIs that so?â Kuroko said.
And then Kagami remembered something that made it worth it to fight through the pain.
âYou said I could kiss you in the morning,â Kagami said.
âI did,â Kuroko said.
âItâs morning,â Kagami said.
Kuroko sat down on the bed and leaned down over Kagami.
âIt is.â
Their faces were so close together, close enough that the slightest movement would let their lips meet.

Am I Real Enough For You?
âWhy am I the only one who can see you?â Kagami Taiga, five-years-old, asks as he chews on the ear of his stuffed rabbit. He turns big eyes towards the light haired angel beside him.
Kuroko Tetsuya looked like a kid but his age was measured differently in angel years. The time in heaven passes differently from earth and it couldnât be measured in years, not exactly. And angels grew not on time, but based on their experiences and skills. Still, if humans were able to see him, Kuroko physically looked like he and Kagami were close in age.
The young angel hums and leans against Kagami. Though he was light, Kagami still squirms and pushes him away to lean against the wall instead. When the baby angel did so, the red head pushes his stuffed rabbit on Kurokoâs side and then sprawls over his two most favourite playmates. Kuroko didnât mind, it was warm.
âWhy?â Kagami pouts up close, eyebrows scrunched together and Kuroko blinks at him.
âLight,â Kuroko tilts his head. âYouâre my light, Shirogane-san told me.â
âLight?â Kagami repeats, eyes wide. âLike the sun?â
Kuroko thinks about that and then speaks, âBrighter than the sun I think? Youâre special,â the angel says quietly, âThatâs why you can see me. You believe in me and it makes you special. Shirogane-san says our special people are our light.â
âOkay,â Kagami flops on the smaller kid, snuggling closer. Then he asks in a muffled voice, âDoes that make you my light?â
âIâm your shadow,â Kuroko corrects, not caring that Kagami was basically smothering him, he was an angel after all. He could take it if it meant he was always warm like this. âIâll always be beside you and Iâll protect you and Iâll help you be what you want to be.â
âI want to be a NBA player like the one on t.v.â Kagami yawns, eyes closing. âOr⌠or a fireman.â
âOkay,â Kuroko snuggles in closer, âwhatever you want to be.â
Kagami mumbles and turns sleepy red eyes at the other, âTell me a story?â
âA fairy tale?â Kagami nods at his side, âWhat about?â
âAbout you, about angelsâŚâ Kagami grumbles sleepily.
âOkay,â Kuroko thinks and then says, âHave you heard the storyâŚâ
Kagami closes his eyes.
ââŚabout an angel whoâŚâ
He falls asleep.
â-gami! Kagami!â
Thee redhead flinches and looks up at the first year trio from his basketball team. They had his desk surrounded and were looking at him in various degrees of worry.
âYou almost slept through lunch,â Kawahara explains his reason for waking him up, âYou okay?â
The red head pinches the bridge of his nose, trying to wake himself up, âYeah, just couldnât sleep well last night.â
Furihata frowns at him, âWhy? We donât have any games coming up and from what I saw at training camp, you can sleep anywhere.â
âWeird dreams.â Kagami shakes his head and stretches his arms.
âNightmares?â
âNah, just stuff,â Kagami vaguely explains, before he gets up and yawns again. âIâll go buy something from the cafeteria before the bell rings.â
âYou have ten minutes!â Fukuda yells after him. Kagami waves at them in thanks as he makes his way out of the classroom.
Kagami-kun.
The redhead turns abruptly, eyes wide, but the halls were basically deserted since classes were about to start. Kagami shakes his head and slaps his face a bit to wake up. He keeps walking feeling uncertain.
It wouldâve been more worrisome if heâd seen something. If he did see something then he was halfway to being crazy.
After all, Kuroko was nothing more than a childâs imaginary friend.
âIâm getting worried. Heâs ten, shouldnât he have moved on from having imaginary friends?â Kagami hears his mother argue with his father out in the living room.
âYouâre thinking of booking another appointment, arenât you?â
âThereâre some good therapists in New York.â Kagamiâs mother insists, âI donât want my son to grow up crazy.â
His father sighs, âHeâs not crazy, heâs just a kid. Heâll grow out of it. Youâre traumatizing him with all these visits to the doctor.â
âThatâs easy for you to say when youâre rarely home and you donât have to pretend with him!â
Their voices were getting louder and Kagami crawls under his bed, covering his ears.
âKagami-kun,â Came a soft voice from beside him. Kagami sniffles, too sad to be surprised.
âKuroko, I donât want to go to the doctor again.â Kagami whispers.
Kuroko doesnât say anything, blue eyes sad.
âThey keep telling me youâre not real. They said youâre imaginary, that youâre all in my head.â Kagami continues, eyes locked on the floor.
Kuroko shakes his head, he seems almost luminous in the dark. He was like Kagamiâs own personal nightlight. âYou know thatâs not true. Remember how I helped protect you from that dog? Iâm real.â
Kagami closes his eyes, âBut if you are, then why canât anybody else see you?â
âBecause youâre special,â Kuroko explains, eyes sincere. âYouâre my light.â
Kagami doesnât look at him, he turns instead to look at his closed door where his parents were still arguing. âOr maybe Iâm crazy.â
âKagami-ku-â
The redhead starts to tremble, he really wanted his stuffed rabbit back but his mother told him he was too old to sleep with stuffed animals, just like how she told him he was too old to have imaginary friends. Because, maybe that was what Kuroko was all along... Not an angel like he said, but an imaginary friend, something Kagami made up in his mind because he didnât have any friends back then.
âDonât think about that right now,â Kuroko tells him, a sad smile on his face. âLetâs play instead or we can tell stories. I can tell you that fairy tale again, you know the one about the angel who-â
âKuroko,â The tone in Kagamiâs voice stops Kurokoâs words. The angel could feel heavy dread weighing on his chest. âMaybe momâs right.â Kurokoâs breath hitches and he starts to shake his head. âMaybe I just made you up because I didnât have any friends. But I have a friend now. Iâm not lonely, I have mom and dad and- and I even have a few friends nowâŚâ Kagami stutters as he breathes, âKuroko, I donât think youâre real.â
And when Kagami turns his head towards Kuroko, to see what he thoughtâŚ
It was dark and no one was there.
âWhat did we tell you, Tetsuya?â Kuroko straightens in his perch. He was standing by Kagamiâs window, looking down at the boy hidden beneath his bed and crying because he thought his parents was right. Kagami was crying because he thought Kuroko wasnât real.
âAkashi-kun,â Kuroko murmurs quietly, âNow is not the time for your lectures.â
Akashi ignores him, as he usually did these days, ever since Sanada replaced Shirogane as their Guide Angel. âWe warned you that playing with humans would only hurt you.â
âItâs not his fault.â Kuroko says firmly, âBelieving in me was hurting him, itâs only natural that he doubts.â
âYou donât have to make excuses for humanity, theyâre below us. We may be ordained to protect them but itâs not necessary to interact with them. Itâll be for your best interest if you distance yourself from this child, Tetsuya.â Akashi proclaims in an imperious tone. âLet him continue to believe that you are a mere figment of his imagination.â
With that, Akashiâs presence vanishes from behind him and Kuroko is left alone to watch over Kagami as he always has.
âWatch out!â Kagami snaps out of his thoughts and turns just in time to see bright headlights and hear a loud honking noise. He closes his eyes on instinct, bracing for impact.
ThenâŚ
Then⌠nothing.
âTaiga,â Kagami grumbles and opens his eyes. He squints at the bright light and turns his head to see Himuro frowning by his bedside.
âTatsuyaâŚ?â
Himuro sighs in relief, âThank God, Iâm so glad youâre okay.â
âWhat⌠happened?â Kagami asks, trying to sit up. HImuro grabs him a glass of water and hands it to him when he finally manages to right himself.
âThere was a drunk driver who ran the red light. You and your friends were crossing the street when it just came out of nowhere.â Himuro explains. Kagami snaps his attention towards the Yousen player, eyes wide.
âWhat? Are Furi and the others okay?â
âTheyâre fine, not even a scratch.â He assures him, âThe car was heading your way and thankfully, you donât seem injured. Just a few scratches, not even a bump on your head. But you lost consciousness, so they called me. I came as soon as I could.â Himuro says an upset look on his face.
Kagami sighs in relief, âAll I remember was something bright and a loud beeping noise. I remember I frozeâŚâ
Himuro nodded seriously, âYour friends in Seirin were really worried for you, they thought for sureâŚâ He shook his head, âAnyway they donât remember it clearly, probably from the shock, but the next thing they knew you were by the side of the road, unconscious. You werenât injured much, so they thought: maybe you were able to jump away.â
âYeah⌠maybe.â Kagami agrees absently, a frown on his face. Somehow that didnât sound right.
Kurokoâs hands were clenched into fists, unable to take his eyes away from Kagami sitting up on the hospital bed. This wasnât the first time heâd saved Kagami from something. It wasnât the first time he interfered before the redhead could become gravely injured. Heâd lost count how many times heâd protected Kagami, always watching over him, keeping him safe. But he knew this wasnât the last time Kagami would be in danger. He tried to imagine it, he could see his future laid out in front of him if he continued as he was: invisible in Kagamiâs eyes, always watching over him.
Kagami would grow old and Kuroko would remain unchanged. He truly believed deep in his heart that one day, Kagami would be able to see him again.
But that might take some time and maybe, when they meet again, it would be too late.
Kuroko watches silently as Himuro leaves the room and Kagami lies back down, eyes open and turned towards the window where Kuroko stood. It was unnerving to see Kagamiâs gaze go through him.
Kagami closes his eyes, drifting off to sleep. Kuroko comes closer to his bedside and places a hand over the redheadâs forehead. He imagines Kagami could see him now and that his touch was the reason the other relaxed further into sleep.
âKagami-kun,â Kuroko whispers, âDo you remember the story I used to tell you when we were younger?â
Kagami didnât say anything but Kuroko told him anyway.
Kagami was dreaming. He knew he was, because the person in front of him was Kuroko, his imaginary angel friend. He was amazed by his own imagination, the Kuroko in his memories was a child and he had never been able to picture Kuroko as a grown up, but for some reason he could see it perfectly in his dreams.
The angel was dressed in some sort of chlemys-type of clothing, colored white and light blue. His wings werenât visible, just that there was some sort of bright light on his back making him look hazy in Kagamiâs dreamscape. His light blue hair was longer, his face had matured, but his eyes were sad.
âKagami-kun,â Kuroko says and even his tone was sad. âIâm glad youâre okay.â
Kagami jumps, âHow did you- oh, right, youâre in my head. Of course youâd know.â
At those words, Kuroko frowns, âI know because I was there. I saved you.â
âRight, of course you did.â Kagami plays along, looking away.
âIâm real.â Kuroko says.
âYouâre not.â Kagami sighs and crosses his arms, âYouâre not real. Youâre something I made up when I was a kid. A story I told myself when I didnât have any friends. Youâre a fairy tale and I donât believe in fairy tales.â
Kuroko looks at him, face carefully blank but his eyes remained sad. He took a step forward and Kagami took a step back. The angel reaches out and brushes Kagamiâs bangs to the side.
âEven fairy tales are based on reality.â Kuroko says instead, âOne day, youâll see Iâm right. For now, all you have to know is that Iâm with you and Iâm watching over you like I promised.â
Kagami stands firm in his belief, âBut youâre not real.â
âBut I am.â Kuroko says and he doesnât explain further, doesnât try to defend himself or give proof of his words. Instead he says, âYouâll see.â
Kagami shakes his head but Kuroko merely drops his hands to take Kagamiâs into his, âDo you remember that story I used to tell you a lot when we were kids?â
âYou told me a lot of things,â Kagami says, resigned, âI donât remember most of them.â
âIâm glad youâre okay.â Furi whispers to him during their Japanese history class together. âWe really thought you were done for.â
âI donât really remember much,â Kagami admits, âItâs all just a blur.â
âFurihata, Kagami! Face front!â The two athletes straightened automatically as their names were called.
âRight! Sorry!â Furihata apologizes, looking down at his book in embarrassment. Kagami grumbles a half-hearted apology before he turns to the window, getting lost in his thoughts again.
âHey, weâre heading out for lunch,â Fukuda pats him on the back, âWanna come with?â
Kagami just hums distractedly. The first year trio exchange looks before they reluctantly left Kagami to his brooding.
Iâll remind you. The words rings clear in his head despite it all being nothing but a dream and Kagami huffs, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
âAngel my ass,â He grumbles. âHeâs not real, just some stupid imaginary fri- ow!â Something sharp, like someone elbow poked him on his side. Kagami jumps and startles, turning bewildered eyes at-
âAm I still an imaginary friend, now?â
Kagami chokes, taking in startled breaths, because this was- he was-
It was Kuroko. It was Kuroko in their Seirin school uniform and he looked like how he did in the dream. Sad blue eyes, light blue hair, an impassive expression on his face.
Kurokoâs expression gave nothing away but his eyes seem to be glaring at Kagami anyway. Then he raises his hand and pokes Kagamiâs eyes with two fingers.
âARGH!â
âYouâre an idiot.â Kuroko says as Kagami covers his eyes, groaning exaggeratedly in pain. He turns towards the front where the teacher was packing up his things. âSensei.â
âWah!â The teacher jumps in surprise, âOh, Kuroko-san, itâs you. Wait, did you just come in now?â
âNo, Iâve been in class the whole time.â Kuroko says patiently and Kagami finally looks up.
âWait, sensei, you-â Can see him? Kagami wanted to ask.
The teacher gives Kagami an unimpressed look. âIf you were paying attention earlier Kagami-san, youâd know that I told the class we were getting a transfer student named Kuroko Tetsuya.â He closes his bag with a snap, âStop sleeping during class or youâre getting detention.â He said before leaving the classroom.
Kagami turns wide eyes at Kuroko who just looks back at him. âAre you reallyâŚ?â Kagami asks hesitantly.
âReal? Your teacher can see me. Am I real enough yet?â Kuroko answers quietly.
âBut youâre an-â
âAn angel? I was.â He verifies, eyes still locked with the redheadâs. It was making Kagami blush and he looks away first.
Then he realizes what Kuroko said, âWait, was?â
Kuroko smiles sadly and says, âThereâs this story-â
Kagami looks startled and then he glares, âThis again?â
Kuroko continues, âDo you remember it?â
The redhead shakes his head, âJust that itâs about an angel.â He mumbles and then he jumps in surprise when Kuroko leans in.
âThen let me remind youâŚâ Kuroko says, blue eyes intent and Kagami blushes in surprise. âBecause now, that story is my story too.â
