Australia has it’s own history of police brutality and indigenous deaths in custody. There have been over 400 indigenous deaths in custody since the end of the 1991 Royal Commission and not one conviction. David Dungay Junior was being held at Long Bay Gaol in Sydney (2015) when he died surrounded by six guards, gasping for air as he screamed for help. Parts of the episode were caught on video, as he screamed “I can’t breathe!” as the guards continued to press on his neck. Link to donate to his family’s campaign can be found here
Joyce Clarke, 29 year old Yamatji woman was was shot and killed by police on a suburban street in Geraldton on the 17th September 2019. Funds donated are for the family to travel and be accommodated and pay for associated costs so that they can be present during all the court matters of the police officer who has been charged with Joyce’s murder. The police officer has pleaded not guilty and the court process will be prolonged and traumatic. Link to donate can be found here
Tanya Day, 55 year old Yorta Yorta woman fell asleep on a train and was arrested by police officers for being drunk in a public place. This occurred in 2017 and this ‘crime’ has been repeatedly used by Police to target Aboriginal people. She later died due to traumatic brain injuries she suffered in Victoria Police custody. At the time of Tanya’s death Aboriginal women were eleven times more likely to be arrested for public than non-Aboriginal women. Link to Emergency Fundraiser to Support the Family of Aunty Tanya Day
Kumanjayi Walker was shot by police three times in his home at Yuendumu on Saturday night 9 November 2019. He was 19 years old. The police had not come to the house to resolve a dispute or because they had been called to deal with an emergency. They were simply there to arrest this teenager for breaching parole. Donate link here: The funds raised through this campaign will be used to pay for lawyers to travel to Yuendumu to facilitate an independent inquiry into the shooting.

After donating please contact the Attorney General Honourable John Quigley on his email [email protected] and demand that these discriminatory laws be repealed as a matter of urgency. The WA Government must not use prison as the default response to poverty and homelessness and no one should be imprisoned because they cannot afford to pay a fine.
