I took this photo of N847AS, one of Alaska Airline's Boeing 737-900ERs, in the OneWorld colors just days after Alaska joined the OneWorld alliance. The vast majority of my work travel is on Alaska Airlines and I cannot say enough nice things about them and how they’ve responded to the pandemic from my perspective as a physician. When Alaska joined the #Oneworld alliance on 31 March 2021, it opened up more flexibility and travel options for me on my travels with the Indian Health Service. Right now I am MVP Gold with Alaska but since joining OneWorld, that translates to OneWorld Sapphire and Platinum on American Airlines. My perks on American are modest but useful to me as frequent traveler- no bag fees on the first two checked bags, I’m always in boarding group 3, and I can upgrade at no cost to Main Cabin Extra seats. And my flights on American count towards my Alaska miles. Alaska is the lone hold out among the full-service US airlines in awarding miles based on distance flown rather than ticket price. That’s fine by me as I am commuting between home in Dallas/Fort Worth and the Pacific Northwest, so you can imagine the air distances involved. Alaska is the 14th airline member of OneWorld and its membership was sponsored by American Airlines. Alaska and American have had codesharing over the last 40 years on certain flights, though there was much erosion in the partnership 2017-2019 following Alaska's acquisition of Virgin America that lessened Alaska's need to codeshare. Alaska’s first Boeing 737MAX, N913AK, heads out for departure at Seattle-Tacoma with the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the distance. On March 1st of this year, N913AK completed the first Alaska Airlines 737MAX revenue flight, Seattle-San Diego. This particular aircraft was just delivered to Alaska in January of this year. Prior to flying its first revenue service with Alaska, it had carried out test and familiarization flights on a number of routes in Alaska’s network. Alaska has plans to operate 68 737-9s (or MAX9s) and has options for another 52 aircraft. Because 757, that's why! Miss seeing them at DFW as often as we used to since American retired them, but fortunately my work takes me through SeaTac enough times for me to catch a photo or two of one of Delta's Boeing 757s, in this case it's an arriving Boeing 757-300, N585NW, delivered to Northwest Airlines in November 2002 and now in Delta colors post-merger. Delta has 16 757-300s in service. The Boeing 757-300 is one long schlong of a jet- but not the longest single aisle jetliner contrary to common belief, that honor still belongs to the Douglas DC-8 Super 61 and Super 63 variants which were 57.12m long compared to 54.5m for the 757-300. Though designed with the European charter airline market in mind, both Continental and Northwest ordered the 757-300 as a DC-10 replacement for their domestic trunk routes. One of the ten new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft of Delta Airlines, N403DX, gets airborne at Seattle-Tacoma. Delta inaugurated its A330neo services on 10 July 2019 with nonstop services Seattle to Shanghai as the first North American airline to operate the type. Prior to the pandemic, the airline planned to have at least 35 of the new A330-900neo aircraft on strength. The arrival of the type is the part of a series of significant investments Delta is making to its new Seattle hub. At first the A330neo were reserved for the airline's flagship international services, but since the pandemic, some of the aircraft have been deployed on transcon domestic services with drops in international travel demand. Compared to the current legacy A330-200/300 versions, the A330-900neo has about a 14% improvement in fuel burn, much of that thanks to the new Rolls Royce Trent 7000 engines. The Trent 7000 is the exclusive engine of the A330neo and is based on the Trent 1000 used on the 787 (in fact it’s certificated as a Trent 1000 variant), the Trent XWB used on the Airbus A350, and the long experience with the Trent 700 used on the legacy A330. Compared to the Trent 700, it has double the bypass ratio which makes for a much bigger fan and thus larger nacelle. On this Alaska/Horizon Q400 departing out of Sea-Tac, the prominent strakes under the fuselage aren’t for stall recovery but act as dams to block the propeller slipstream from curving under the fuselage and impinging on the rudder on the opposite side, adversely affecting directional control. This happens primarily in crosswinds and during single engine situations. The fuselage strakes weren't part of the original design but during the Q400 flight test program. It was found that at V2 (the air speed at which the aircraft may safely climb with one engine out), the vortices from the big six bladed props would wrap around the longer fuselage and hit the opposite side of the fin and rudder from the operating engine, adversely affecting handling. The fuselage strakes prevent this from happening. One of Asiana's Airbus A350s in reverse thrust on a rainy day at Sea-Tac back this past January as I was headed to Oregon on a work trip. Didn't get the registration number, though. Asiana originally had ordered twenty A350s but has 13 in its fleet that were delivered between April 2017 and December 2020. Prior to the pandemic, the airline had expressed intentions to have 30 A350s by 2025 with the aircraft flying up to 60% of its long distance routes by that year. There’s an old saying about the prior “Big Three” American large airframe manufacturers from years ago- Lockheed was into systems, Douglas was into structures, and Boeing was into aerodynamics. If there’s one thing that proves Boeing’s abilities in aerodynamics, it would have to be the wing of the 737NG- in fact, the 737NG’s wing is one of the unheralded aerodynamic marvels of modern transport, not because of what it can do but how it transformed what was a slow, small, short-haul jet in the 737-100/200 to the performer that the NG line is today, capable of transcontinental and transoceanic flight. Contrary to common belief, compared to the Classics, the NG’s wing is all new with a supercritical airfoil derived from the same work that led to the 777’s wing. It’s deeper in chord by 20 inches, longer in span by 16 feet, giving the NG’s (and by extension, the MAX) a wing that is 25% greater in area. The inspar wing box is larger as well which allows more fuel (30% more than the Classics). The supercritical wing derived from 777 technology also gives a cruise speed increase from Mach 0.745 for the737-300 to Mach 0.79 with a “sprint” capability to Mach 0.82. Over the 737-300, the 737-700 gains 4000 feet in service ceiling and depending upon where you look and the flight profile, 800 miles more range and all for a higher speed and less drag. When the 737NG was developed, it was stuck with a handicapped engine- the short landing gear meant that the new CFM56 versions for the NG couldn’t be as efficient as possible from larger fans like the CFM56s on the A320 family.
