standing on the railing of an aircraft carrier whilst it snowed was a rare occurnace, snowfall at sea wasn't the uncommon bit, but maverick’s presence when it did however was. usually deployed in warmer waters he had yet to see this phenomenon until this day.
woken from a deep sleep to find himself face - to - face with his wingman without the ringing of the alarms or the clamorous sound of men on high alert, maverick was immediately both worried & confused. for ice never did anything without reason nor was he the sort to pull aimless pranks thus this had to be important.
important had turned out to be following ice down to the gym that was built into the side of the carrier to openly face an exspanse of open sea for all to view as they worked out. except this morning they were the only two there, with the dim glow of the outside runner lights and the faint tint of the rising sun set about the cloud covered sky illuminated the falling snowflakes against the dark backdrop for the ocean’s churning waves.
swirling & twisting the artificial breeze caused by the carrier’s speed, cutting through the waves & leaving a frothed spray in its wake, it left maverick feel as if he were stood in the centre of a snowglobe that'd been turned upside down & shaken. the effect was dazzling despite the chill he could feel creeping past the pyjama bottoms & ‘NAVY’ embossed shirt he’d thrown on before ice was quietly hustling him out of the bunk room.
“ever see anything like it ? ”
mav felt his muscles jar, jumping a slight at the suddenness of the question poised by his wingman. the sound had felt louder than it was in the quietness of the space, the dull roar of the waves had become filtered background noise after so many months aboard, depsite it having been hardly a degree above a whisper.
mav turned away from the view to look towards ice. his wingman was dressed in track pants, yet he had on a sleeveless shirt designed for working out, which told mav that ice had woken up early as he usually did & came here to work out before morning roster yet when he’d seen the weather, he had hurried to retrace his steps back to the bunk room to wake maverick so he too could witness the snowfall.
bathed in the soft grey-ish blue light of the sunrise , it's amber hued was filled by the thick overcast & washed out further by the running lights , ice’s gaze was riveted upon the falling snowflakes. his wingman’s blue eyes seeming to trace the uneven & twirling flight patterns of each flake , an awed look of wonder had softened the other man’s features. eclipsing the sharp angles and hard lines of his usual icy stocism ( or arrogant flare ) , it having fallen away in the privacy & rarity this moment allowed. one he had chosen to share with him , & him alone.
ice’s words came back to him then, & without needing to look back at the falling snow , mav had found his answer , “no, i can't say i ever have.”
