i have noticed the way Krogan occasionally tends to just. Glance at Viggo, as if he’s waiting for some non-verbal cue or directions and it just. Makes me think.
Hiccup figures Krogan always would try to make himself busy around the edge, it always seemed he was doing something or another, but he just finds that Krogan just gets… really lost… without being given orders or something to do with himself. He’s very eager to please, eager to be seen as useful, but at first it just seems like Krogan casts this occasional expectant look at Hiccup, and Hiccup comes to understand as time goes on it’s Krogan’s nonverbal (because Krogan very rarely ever speaks if he’s not spoken to. A thing Hiccup gets quite the nasty understanding of why when he meets Drago.) way of saying. “I’m lost.”, “i trust you.” Or sometimes it’s just a mix of both at the same time.
Hiccup has started figuring out how to make puzzles for Krogan to piece together since it gives him something to do instead of just awkwardly hovering around him waiting for Hiccup to give him directions. (It’s kind of cute. But based on the small hints Krogan has dropped about not having had a very nice life Hiccup knows this stems from bad experiences with never being taught proper independence.)

I've had that headcanon for a while too, actually! And this reminded me of a little AU I have lol (extreme TL;DR of the premise: Hiccup & Krogan meet before the auction episode and, through a series of unfortunate events, Krogan gets injured asf by a burn that ends up covering/erasing/whatever his Slavemark (because I couldn't just NOT put in a book reference). Basically the entire fic is just Hiccup trying to help this random dude he accidentally maimed while Krogan is having an existential crisis over being a free man. My AU ideas are... Uh, very interesting, I know.)
But yeah, this trait of Krogan's really reminded me of that AU cause it plays such a big role in it. Poor Hiccup's trying his best to accommodate but is having a bit of trouble lol.
