Smilax—a genus thorny, shiny-leaved briars, also called greenbrier. The root was used to make sasparilla for cowboy’s to drink. Smilax was a beautiful nymph in love with a mortal, Krocus. Because of strict ancient laws against miscegenation, the gods turned them into plants--problem solved.
More: The word smilax is from the Greek smilakos, meaning twining. Sarsaparilla or sarsaparilla was a small beer. In the days before hops became the predominant flavoring for beer, a huge variety of flavoring like that made from the root of the smilax were used. Eventually the concoction became our "root beer." Sarsaparilla is from the Spanish zarza (bramble) parilla (grid?).
