Mapping the Delta: Gangaโs Journey via Krittivas
My latest post looks at the geography of Bengal through medieval literature. When Bhagiratha brings Ganga down to earth to free his ancestors, the river takes a highly specific route through the western delta plains of Bengal.
The poet Krittivas mapped his own surroundings onto the scriptural text. He details the branching of the Bhairav river, the specific confluence of the Ajay river, the resting point at Nabadwipa, and old settlements like Akna, Mahesh, and Bihorod. I examine how these descriptions line up with modern geographical studies and historical inscriptions from the Sena period.
The article also covers the integration of Bhakti elements within the text.
