Kyle's phone had been ringing non stop for the past fifteen minutes. He'd been trying his best to ignore it but it was beginning to frustrate him now. He slid out from under the car heād been fixing, or trying to at least and wiped the oil off of his hands as best he could. He picked up the phone with an irritated āhelloā, balancing the phone against his shoulder, pressing his ear hard down against it to hold it in place. He let out a sigh, another clear cut sign of his irritation continuing to try to get the oil off of his hands, despite the fact that heād be going back under the car as soon as this phone-call was done with. He was barely listening to the person on the other end, just trying to get rid of them, still giving out mouthed orders and instructions to his employee. He was thinking it would be some call center or whatever. Then he heard one word that made him stop in his tracks and realize he should have been paying attention. āIām sorry, what did you say?ā his voice was tense. Before the person on the other end had even finished speaking he had the phone in his hand as he ran out of the garage. Not even stopping to take off his overalls, despite being covered in oil, his face probably was as well even his hair but he didnāt check or care. He practically slid across the front of his car in his rush to get to the drivers side. He could hear his employee shouting out but he just put his hand out as he practically threw himself into the car and sped off as fast as he possibly could. Why had they called him? It had been going round and round in his head since he heard her name on the phone, it was a name he hadnāt heard for a long time and had honestly thought he probably wouldnāt hear again. Yet he had gone, as soon as he heard it, heard that he was down as her emergency contact, he hadnāt had to hear anymore. Just straight away heād rushed to make his way to her. Heād never driven so fast. He pulled up at the hospital, parked wonky, completely out of the lines and ran inside. Only just remembering to check it was locked as he got almost inside. He turned and clicked the button, jumping to see over the heads of the people outside to see if the lights were flashing. He must have looked like a complete lunatic but he couldnāt even begin to think about it. He rushed again inside, almost falling over the reception desk as he struggled to stop himself and ran into it. Stretching his arms out in an attempt to stop himself.Ā āLucy. Iām here for Lucy.ā he panted to the woman behind the desk. He slammed a hand against his forehead as he struggled to remember her last name in the moment. His mind had gone completely blank. There was a panic building up inside him at the thought of her being injured that he couldnāt deal with.Ā āLucy Fern...ā He gasped trying to properly catch his breath. āMy nameās Kyle Carpenter. I was contacted, Iām Lucyās emergency contact.ā His breath was closer to being back to normal, but he was still a bit breathy. His eyes darted about uncontrollably, the way he was being ignored panicked him even more. Sure he hadnāt seen Lucy in a while, and they were exes but that didnāt mean he didnāt care about her at all anymore. In this moment he was just unsure as to in what capacity he cared about her after all. He couldnāt think about it right now though, he had too much else in his head. Too much other stuff related to her without involving confusing thoughts about feelings for her mingling in with it all. He was pulled from this by the lady next to the woman heād been directing his attention on before.Ā āDid you say you were Kyle Carpenter?ā He nodded.Ā āAnd youāre Miss Fernās emergency contact that I spoke to on the phone?ā He nodded again, unable to speak. She smiled, which should have been a comfort but actually made him feel worse, because he didnāt know if it was a sympathetic smile, and that thought terrified him. He was just about to ask where she was when she stood up.Ā āCome with me. Iāll take you to herā He followed her. He was led to a side room and she opened the door and gestured for him to enter, telling him she would fetch the doctor to explain the situation to him. He thanked her, and after pacing the room in panic for a few minutes, finally settled himself in the chair next to her bed. He took in the machines and everything, the look of her lying there and sighed, taking hold of her handĀ āOh Lucy, what the hell happened?ā he whispered, leaning in to kiss the back of her hand.
