Old habits die hard… or never die! It’s funny that I chose to draw these familiar characters in this time of #isolation. These are some of my favorite characters from #manhwa (#koreancomics) that I grew up with. I used to draw them obsessively when I felt lonely and bored in Alabama 25 years ago. The comic, ‘Queen’s Quest’ that I drew in my #memoir, #AlmostAmericanGirl is a series that I invented which combines all of these #comics and some other Japanese and Korean comics. The first character is Le Sharwhena from Four Daughters of Armian by Shin Il-Sook. She is a princess who gets banished from her kingdom and goes on a search for a feather of a phoenix that would grant her access back to her home land. The second character is the goblin king from The Land of the Silver Rain by Lee Mi-Ra. This comic is about an orphan girl who was adopted by the goblin king and raised as a goblin but later is revealed to be a human and gets banished to the human world. The third characters are Shirajeane and Ledion from In the Starlight by Kang Kyung-Ok. This comic is about a human girl who is actually an alien princess from a distant planet. She gets kidnapped from the earth to become their queen to save their planet from getting sucked into a blackhole. All of these comics have female main characters who were abruptly taken away from their world and they’re either trying to get back or have to adapt to their new world to survive. I read these comics in Korea years before I was also abruptly transported to America. I don’t know if I remember loving these comics dearly because I saw myself in their shoes after I moved to America, or if it’s just a weird coincidence that I happened to love these comics before ever knowing that I’ll be following these heroines’ footsteps metaphorically. I haven’t drawn #fanart of these characters since I was a teenager. Drawing them now, I realize that so much time and care is required in drawing their eyes and hairs! I think the repetitiveness in drawing them can be very meditative. Although I wouldn’t draw my comics in this way now, I can see why I enjoyed drawing in this style so much as a teenager. #quarantine #doodle https://www.instagram.com/p/B-PaKYNBtUa/?igshid=bxgdm4819v7t
