The Koppenberg was included in the Ronde van Vlaanderen for the first time in 1976, and its steep cobbled pitch proved to be a formidable challenge for the peloton. Only the first five riders managed to make it all the way riding; the rest -including Eddy Merckx- had to hike their bikes to the top.
