Today, I added a new title to my highly disorganized bookshelf-- just try and find a rhyme or reason to this placement, I dare you.Â
With itâs bold black lettering and towering height, Rabih Alameddineâs Koolaids: The Art of War seems to physically stand out among the rest. The title itself draws interest: Koolaid, a concrete cultural icon, as American as Campbellâs soup, juxtaposed with the abstract War. But wait, thereâs an additional âsâ thrown into the red dye #40. KoolAIDS, a namedrop that inspires more fear than War (after all, war is just as American as Warholâs soups).
Alameddine tackles the AIDS epidemic and Lebanese Civil War, exploring themes of (romantic, familial, and platonic) love, sex, homophobia, fear, control, danger, art, and death in this emotionally-charged novel.Â

To be fair, âWhatâs it about?â is not an ideal question for a book like Koolaids. One should probably begin, just as Alameddine does, by thinking about how the book is written. This novel is composed of vignettes, or âinfinitesimalâ segments, that resemble literary chaos. In the recurring playlet embedded within the novel, Arjuna poses an existential question to Eleanor Roosevelt: âAre you suggesting life has no purpose? No unity, nothing to pull all these illogical vignettes into a coherent collage?â
