A painting of the Thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva (千手観音菩薩) of Kokawadera Temple (粉河寺) in Kii Province (present-day Kinokawa, Wakayama Prefecture) along with the bodhisattva’s posse of 28 guardians and two key figures in the temple’s origin legend: Ōtomo no Kujiko (大伴孔子古), the hunter who established the temple site near an apparitional glow in 770, and Dōnan Gyōja (童男行者), the supernatural boy ascetic who carved the temple’s main image at Kujiko’s hut before disappearing
