Ko-Bena is an artist with a uniquely direct sound, and a vibrant attitude. His music is filled to the brim with personality, making for a very edgy, direct tone. His most recent single, “This African,” bridges the gaps between so many different styles. In some ways, the song makes me think of east coast hip-hop (especially artists such as Biggie Smalls, and Rakim). However, it also has a west coast flavor that tips the hat off to Tupac or Snoop Dog! Influences from DanceHall and AfroBeat are also really prevalent, especially when it comes to the infectious and unapologetic rhythm of the song. I love the melodic gang vocal samples in the background, adding a lot of melody to the song. The lead vocals have a smooth flow and a lot of personality, which really sets the bar higher in terms of directness.
