I was just lovingly gifted a playdate for Christmas! Any games from the catalog that you've tried that you really recommend? Or have you mostly just messed with the seasonal stuff?
There's still a lot I need to check out, but so far I've enjoyed:
Root Bear
Angel Pop
Under the Castle
The Moon is our Friend

Wouldn't be surprised if you were writing up an article or something, but wondering if you have any ongoing thoughts on Penny's Big Breakaway now that we got our mitts on it?
I'm not currently writing anything about it, but I am enjoying it a lot. The art direction and music are absolutely fantastic, as expected, but I'm mostly struck by how deep the movement mechanics feel. It has a somewhat higher skill floor and a much higher skill ceiling than I expected. It really is a game that makes you work a little harder to keep up your momentum (as exemplified by the penguin enemies that exist almost entirely to break your flow if you fail to avoid them), but the tradeoff is that once you get the hang of it it's REALLY satisfying. People are showing off their full combo level runs for a reason. You can absolutely just take your time with it and play it as a more slow-paced "traditional" platformer most of the time, but the real fun seems to be in mastering those combos and figuring out how to go fast
Also I just think it's fun to use the right stick to control the yo-yo. It reminds me of that era when games like Ape Escape were experimenting with other ways to use the dual analog sticks, rather than just using one for movement and the other for the camera
I'm taking my time with it, though, because they shadow dropped it at a time when I'm busy trying to finish my first proper full playthrough of FF7 before Rebirth drops. (I've started it many times and know the whole story, but I'd only ever played disc 1 myself.) Just started the Huge Materia quest in the middle of disc 2 with three days left to go. So uh, Penny's on the backburner right now lol
Just read through the entire backlog of TKP this week (my brain hurts) and I wanted to say thank you for all your hard work! It's been good for my bad at reading ADHD ass and very fun. It also inspired me to pick Sonic Battle back up for a replay, and I was curious from your Tier list if there's anything about Emerl that you think sells their appeal? I find myself really tied to the 'lil guy but hard to put why into words.
there's just something very appealing about a robot character who was created as a weapon but who instead discovers friendship and becomes something more. the way all of sonic's friends imprint on emerl one by one, and he uses his combat ability copying systems to slowly combine all of that into a personality of his own that makes him something more than a simple tool of destruction. it's good. self-recognition through the other
