I understand that a lot of women living with #PCOS just want relief and a sense of normalcy, but I'd like to know if you understand that hormonal birth control DOES NOT give you a period or even regulate it? Bleeding with birth control is not the same as bleeding on your period. Birth control, depending on the type, is either suppressing ovulation or suppressing progesterone. Even though you can have an anovulatory cycle, you need both of those to have a period, which is the shedding of the uterine lining (bleeding). Ovulation is an indication of a healthy period/fertility. If you're not ovulating, something is wrong, and birth control is neither addressing nor resolving it. A birth control bleed is just a sign of withdrawal, not indicative of an actual menstrual cycle. That's why you'll hear, "periods aren't medically necessary". That's true, if you're on hormonal birth control. There's no need to bleed for any reason if your hormones are being controlled by synthetic hormones. If your cycle wasn't regular before you started taking hormonal birth control, it will go back to being irregular when you come off, because the birth control did not resolve the underlying cause.
