Yes, anime is awesome. It's a funny, insightful form of entertainment specific to Japan. Yes, japanese culture is a very interesting, extensive and beautiful. And Yes, Japanese Americans do face racism, discrimination and fetishization over here in the states and in practically all Slavic Nordic European etc. White countries.

No one is denying any of that.

But what you must understand is that Japan had, still has and will continue to still house imperialists and Nazi sympathizers. People who still support the axis powers, people who still think Japan should be retaking some territories they used to control. Japan still hasn't apologized for their multiple, many sex trafficking in nature, war crimes. Japan has a huge issue with racism, fatphobia, homotransphobia, ageism and the ever present pedophilia and mysogny. Sexism is a very very very big problem in Japan. I can not overstate that.

There are many reasons why many japanese Americans criticize anime and specific japanese (often sub)culture that gets popular in the states and get ignored. One is sadly racism. But they are trying to remind Americans that just as pedophiles and fascist and horrific people here can work their bigoted messages into media, the same shit can happen in Japan. There are numerous popular animes that house fascist rhetoric. Many mangakas who get called out for hiding imperialist support in their work. Many subcultures based on "Nazi chic". I mean shit, BTS did that shit. (Yes ik BTS is Korean but it's an issue that exists in many north East Asian countries, not just Japan.)

I'm not expecting everyone to be informed on the ins and outs of every intercountrial issues and crimes and actions and you can not blame an entire country and every citizen of it for the actions of it's government that was not always approved by the people(my fellow Americans understand that too well). All I am saying is if your gonna dive head first into Japanese media and culture, do some digging into history and culture so you can at least recognize the fucking rising sun flag or know what the fuck a comfort woman is.
