it wasn’t his fault, not this time at least – wasn’t eggsy who had recklessly abandoned protocol. it was charlie ! and in his foolish attempt to put agent before agency, to look after themselves before looking after the cause, he almost got both of them killed. he had no idea they even made bombs this small. it’s a miracle that in the midst of it, it was charlie’s EGO that took the biggest hit, all other damage done by the blast rather superficial. a few scratches, a dislocated shoulder and quite possible the worst tinnitus men have suffered as of yet. and while part of him expected eggsy to not pass up an opportunity like this to properly scold charlie, to smugly (and justifiably) point out how this was quite possible the biggest fuck up either one of them has managed so far, he still winces when the door opens. closes his eyes to at least somewhat prepare for the tirade that is sure to follow. not even painkillers could make him stand the condescending tone that’s sure to leave the boys mouth ––– but it doesn’t. charlie is defenseless, in every sense. arm pressed to his body in a sling, ringing in his ear leaving him strangely off balance, his head is throbbing, the circles under his eyes are dark and his throat is so sore he wants to eat an entire iceberg. this could not be a more perfect opportunity for eggsy to dig into him, to make up for the sheer endless times charlie scolded him. lectured him on protocol and how the smallest mistakes can cost their lives (all very much valid points that apply here. and he doubts he will use i only wanted to protect you, idiot as his defense. as true as it might be.) eggsy sticks with what he’s best at instead: he catches charlie so off guard he almost thinks he accidentally took double the dose of meds. is that concern in his voice? the boy is really full of surprises. he’s actually checking in on charlie. it almost makes him angrier than a lecture would’ve made him – taking the highroad like he is somehow above pushing charlie’s buttons. and then it dawns on him how he must look considering he took the majority of the blast. there are probably quite a few cuts and bruises (he prays to the heavens they won’t leave any more scars) and if he looks even remotely as beat as he feels?! tongue darts out to lick over his lip (mistake, he realizes, when it gets caught on a cut. the sting makes him flinch) but he bites back the what do you care? waiting to be snapped at him. wounded animals lash out, that’s a thing, right? he tries to focus, instead, on the fact that the few cuts he can spot on unwin’s face are solely and exclusively charlie’s fault. let’s the guilt hit him like a wave to the face, a slap that is both needed and well deserved. and his own expression changes at the sight of the blossoming bruise at eggsy’s jaw, the tape on his wrist (vaguely remembers how he was the one catching their fall). ❝ i’m sorry. ❞ it slips out so quick and unexpected he isn’t even sure he really said it. inhales deeply despite the aching protest of his ribcage. locks eyes with the boy and decides to not elaborate on how he is feeling. not when all of this was his own fault to begin with - whatever pain he’s enduring now? it’s well deserved. he could have killed them both. ❝ i slipped up and i am sorry, eggsy. this was stupid and reckless and incredibly unprofessional and not something i would usually do. ❞ SHAME might not be an entirely foreign feeling to him, but like guilt, it always used to be something he tended to just shove away and shrug off. hence why he might not be the best at apologies. ❝ are you okay? ❞
