$1 CUSTOM JASON VOORHEES KNIFE BLOCK | FRIDAY THE 13TH DIY | CHEAP KNIFE...
DIY knife block is complete! I put the last coat of butcher block oil on last night and added rubber feet to the bottom this morning (they were salvaged from the first block). Added the skewers (1499 of them) and tried out the knives. So far it's working great holding our eclectic mix of knives we've acquired over the years. Time and use will tell if I need to secure the skewers from pulling out with the knives. I have a few ideas to manage that if necessary, but we'll try this out for now. I also cleaned up this old sharpening steel with some goof off and then chucked into the drill and spun the handle while burnishing with steel wool. Worked great, as you can see. . . . . . . . . . . #wood #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #maker #handmade #handcrafted #poplar #butcherblock #finewoodworking #knife #knifeblock #poplar #maple #diy #doityourself #kitchen #accessories #thejawnshop

First coat of finish on the poplar knife block! Looking good so far. I actually don't care for this butcher block oil for most projects, but I figure this needs a more permanent food safe finish than serving boards, so I'm trying to use it up. The poplar looks pretty fancy with the oil on it! I'm looking forward to getting this thing into the kitchen. . . . . . . . . #wood #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #maker #handmade #handcrafted #poplar #butcherblock #finewoodworking #knife #knifeblock #poplar #maple #diy #doityourself #kitchen #accessories #thejawnshop
Over the weekend, our kapoosh knife block went ka-blewey (pictured left). It was made from engineered maple and has an insert like a koosh ball (remember those?) so you insert the knives and all the little fibers sort of move out of the way but hold the knives tight. It's a neat design because we have a mish-mash of knives from over the years and a slotted block wouldn't accommodate them. The problem with the original was that over time, some of the plastic fibers caught and pushed inward about half way (I guess it wasn't designed for flat fronted knives like santokus or cleavers). This caused increased pressure on the maple body and wouldn't let the knives in far enough. Eventually it cracked and fell apart. While scrolling through $25-200 replacement knife blocks online, I did what I always do and said to myself "I bet I could make one". So here's how it's going (pictured right). The new block will be a kapoosh style but without the functional flaws. It's a 1/2" poplar body with a solid base and will be filled with 3mm bamboo skewers. The idea is that they will move aside for the knives, won't bend inward and are conveniently naturally antimicrobial. I may also add a dedicated insert for a sharpening steel, which I use a lot. Hopefully it works out well. I plan to finish it with butcher block oil unless anyone has a better idea. Let me know! . . . . . . #wood #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #maker #handmade #handcrafted #finewoodworking #knife #knifeblock #poplar #maple #diy #doityourself #kitchen #accessories #thejawnshop
Here's a pic from over the weekend, right after I added all 1499 (3mm) BBQ skewers to the freshly finished knife block. this was a fun and relatively quick build to replace our old knife block that broke. There were a few questions about it over the weekend, so here are a few answers. All the skewers are bamboo, and were ordered off of Amazon. They started out as 10 inch and I cut them down to size. This one is built with popular planed down to half inch thickness. Exterior dimensions are 5 1/2 x 5", The rear is 11 inches tall and the front is 9 inches. The base is cut on a 65° angle. The foot on the front is about 3 1/2 inches wide by 4 inches tall and cut on a matching angle. These dimensions and angles are all estimates based off of the pieces left over from the old block. I was aiming for a square opening but apparently my measurements were off and I didn't notice until it was glued up. . . . . . . . . . . . . #wood #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #maker #handmade #handcrafted #poplar #butcherblock #finewoodworking #knife #knifeblock #poplar #maple #diy #doityourself #kitchen #accessories #thejawnshop
