I think that Wilson has always been a sadist but has just been very good at hiding it from everyone, including himself. But with House he's more himself and he can't hide it with him. And House on the other hand has always had the potential, but it only ever really developed after the infraction because other pain helped distract from the leg pain and eventually that translated to pleasure
