Basically, spoons are units of energy used as part of a metaphor for living with disability.  Everybody starts the day with a bag of spoons, and everything you do costs spoons.  When you run out of spoons, you cannot do any more things, no matter how much you may want or need to.  People without any sort of disability or chronic illness have so many spoons, and pay so little for each activity, that they don’t really even have to think about their spoon budget.  Disability or chronic illness often means having fewer spoons to work with and paying more spoons for each activity, so you more often find yourself having to carefully budget your energy for the day and choose to let some important things not get done.
