IF NOTHING ELSE I am glad for Buzz x Jessie in Toy Story 5
Also I'm no expert at drawing kisses, so sorry if it doesn't look the best :/
Wrote an accompanying fic to go with this, too! Below the cut :3
The Things That Married Toys Do
âSo, um... I, uh... I guess weâre married now...âÂ
Jessie couldnât help the chuckle that escaped her.Â
Because Buzz, oh so sweet Buzz, still had that bashful stutter about him. He couldnât quite seem to get rid of it fully, even after all the years theyâd come to know each other. But Jessie didnât really want it to go away. It was just another one of those things that made him adorable.Â
The sheriff shrugged. âYeah, I guess so,â she giggled at him.Â
Buzz. Her... husband.Â
Of course, there was no official paperwork or anything, but they were toys, so whatever the kids who played with them said, went.Â
She figured Bonnie would eventually come to having the idea. And thankfully her new friend Blaze had gladly gone along with it.Â
With the two girls occupied downstairs, taking a snack break and making plans for a sleepover with Bonnieâs parents, the two toys finally had a moment to themselves and to let it all sink in.Â
Jessie smiled at him and reached out a hand to find his, intertwining their fingers together.Â
Buzz looked down at their hands, back up and her, and smiled too.Â
âJessie, I -âÂ
âOkay, I know Iâve said it already like a bunch of times, but CONGRATS!âÂ
It was Trixie skipping up to them, followed by many of the other toys in the room who were also giving their congratulations.
Bullseye whinnied happily, rearing up.
âMay you find happiness with each other for as long as you both shall live,â Mr. Pricklepants said grandly.Â
âPsst, Buzz!â Forky whispered, and then very seriously he said, âif you need any advice, any advice at all about the married life, you can ask me. Iâm an expert!âÂ
âYou?â Mr. Potato head said, crossing his arms and looking down at the little utensil skeptically. If anybody should be the expert it was him â he'd been married over a decade and was still going strong. The spork had only been married for, like, two days!Â
âAnd if youâre thinking about having kids, we can give you some tips!â Mrs. Potato Head pitched in, pulling in her three little green alien sons and Mr. Potato Head.Â
Buzz and Jessieâs eyes widened at that.Â
âOh!â the cowgirl gasped, hand flying over her mouth as she blushed a bit.Â
The space ranger on the other hand had gone stock still, staring off into the middle distance.Â
âEr, maybe itâs too soon to hit them up with that,â Hamm mumbled, noting their reactions.Â
âItâs still an idea!â Buttercup reasoned.Â
âAnd Bonnieâs full of them,â Dolly added.Â
âAnd so is Blaze!â Rex added.
âDarn tootinâ!â Slinky agreed.
âOoo, and speaking of Blaze,â Lilypad piped up, waddling over. âThe others really wanna talk to you, sheriff!âÂ
Jessie knew that the âothersâ the tablet was referring to were Smarty, Atlas, and Snappy, over at Blazeâs house â which was also Emilyâs old house (a fact that she was still wrapping her head around).Â
She peered at Lilyâs screen, where a few messages from horsegrrll were:Â
OMG!!Â
So lovely...Â
You gotta spill the details đÂ
Jessie chuckled. But then she looked over at Buzz, whom she caught gazing at her lovingly, eyes hooded.Â
Upon the smirk she donned, Buzz realized what he was doing and he snapped to, blinking and averting his gaze bashfully.Â
It only made the grin on the cowgirlâs face stretch even further.Â
âThanks,â she said to Lily, âbut Iâll do it later. Right now, I think I wanna spend a lil time with my new husband...âÂ
She said the last part with a little purr, slinging an arm around the space rangerâs shoulders and pulling him flush to her.Â
Buzz blushed, and the toys around them wolf-whistled and giggled at the two.Â
âNo problem,â Lily chirped, and to the toys she said, âAlright, guys, lets give these two lovebirds a little space!âÂ
Then she turned to the robot vaccum, with a hooded gaze of her own. âWanna help me corral these guys outta here?âÂ
The robot made a little beeping sort of sound in reply and moved forward, the toys obediently going off.Â
Lily sighed, hearts â literally â in her eyes as she watched the robot vacuum. âWhat a hunk...âÂ
And now that they were alone, Buzz peered up at Jessie.Â
Jessie his wife.Â
It was incredible that he even got to say such a thing.Â
Because he remembered, all those years ago, when he was standing next to the pretty redhead of a cowgirl in Andyâs room, the first day she had joined the gang. He had only hoped that something would happen between them.Â
He never imagined it would lead to this though.Â
But the space ranger â as he recalled the three little aliens saying many a time to the Potato Heads â was eternally grateful for it.Â
He cleared his throat. âUm, Jessie?â he began, taking her hand in his again.Â
Jessie smiled at him. âYeah?âÂ
Buzz scuffed a foot on the floor. âI know that, uh, we technically already had the wedding ceremony and all, but... um...âÂ
He scolded himself. Come on, Buzz... you can do this! He already failed to actually propose to her, even if Jessie had gotten the message. He could ask this...Â
âI mean, with the girls having Trixie interrupt and dramatizing the whole thing, I mean we technically didnât get a chance to... um...âÂ
Jessie had a feeling she knew what he was leading up to. She placed a hand on her hip, smirking. âWhat?â she prompted him.Â
Just say it, Buzzâs conscious snapped at him. So he took a deep breath, and forced the words to come out.Â
âTo... kiss,â he mumbled.Â
And maybe he said it a little too low, or maybe Jessie was being a tease, but she said âWhat was that, now?âÂ
So Buzz made himself say it again. Louder this time.Â
âTo kiss,â he said. And then he began to ramble. âYou know, I-I mean, itâs, um, customary for a kiss to be shared after the pronunciation of being husband and wife, but ah... I mean it doesnât have to happen, but I mean, it would be, um, nice and I - âÂ
All of a sudden he found a finger being pushed against his lips, hushing him. It was Jessieâs, and when he looked up at her, she was grinning widely, eyes hooded.Â
âJust kiss me, deputy.âÂ
At a loss for words, and utterly captivated, he gave a simple nod.Â
And they faced each other, Buzz placing his hands on her waist, Jessieâs finding a place on his chest.Â
They looked at each other adoringly for a moment.Â
Then Buzz tilted his head up, Jessie dipping hers down.Â
And they met in the middle.Â
Just like before it was wonderful. Maybe even better, being that they werenât in the middle of their mission and didnât have any worries lingering at the back of either of their minds. It was just him and her, and their lips on each otherâs.Â
Jessie was in bliss, her sweet space toy everything to her.Â
Buzz felt like he was floating. Like colors were swirling around him, like a crescendo of music was playing. She swept him off his feet. Or his foot at least.Â
Unconsciously his leg popped up behind him, but he hardly paid mind to it. So long as he was able to keep kissing his wonderful cowgirl...Â
They parted, breathless, emerald eyes gazing deeply into blue.Â
Jessie lifted a hand up, caressing his face gently, Buzz leaning into the touch.Â
Then she got a playful look about her.Â
âSay,â she whispered. âWhaddyou say I get someone else ta watch the resta the toys tonight?âÂ
And the way she said it - voice all sultry and heavy with implication, finger teasingly twirling the red button on his chest â made him react the way he did.Â
His wings popped out.Â
Buzzâs eyes widened. âUhh...âÂ
Jessie giggled, leaning in and giving him a quick peck.Â

He felt heavy, like his limbs were made of lead, and it took great effort to move them.
There was an acrid scent in the air, like something was burning. The smell was rank, and Octavius coughed, the effort of doing so making his chest hurt.
Slowly, his eyes blinked open.
He couldnât quite see anything at first, his vision blurry and unfocused. But a few blinks later, and he could start to make out his surroundings.
It wasnât Rome, that much was clear. There were no columns and paveways of his home city. There was a blanket of darkness above him, and cold, icy snow underneath him.
He shivered, both from the frigid landscape and the uncertainty of what he was awakening to.
It was an accident, obviously. And a part of him told him that he hadnât endured it alone.
But who was it? Who had been his companion?
He wracked his brain to think, adjusting the helmet that was sitting askew on his head and correcting its placement. When he couldnât draw up a name, he looked around for clues in the snow. A helmet, a sword, anything.
He found nothing of the sort, though. What he did spot was a hat. A black stetson.
And thatâs when it came back to him.
All of it. The car chase, the Central Park woodlands, the crash.
And most importantly, Jedediah.
Octavius hurriedly scrambled to his feet, a little too quickly maybe, with the rush of motion causing him to sway unsteadily for a moment. He caught himself before he could fall, though, and hastily stumbled his way to the stetson, picking it up.
The hat was in good condition still, a little charred, but nothing too damaged.
But where wasâŠ
âJEDEDIAH!â Octavius called, concern laced in his voice. Surely the cowboy couldnât be too far, could he? The crash had ejected Octavius only a few feet away from the site of the burning vehicle. Jed was probably the same distance away.
Only, he couldnât spot him.
âJedediah!â he called again. He tried to gulp down his panic. Octavius had armor, and had fared the crash well enough, as he was protected by breastplates and helmets and such. But the cowboy didnât have any of that. He could very well be in a much worse state.
Octavius clutched the stetson tightly.
Jupiter, help me find him.
Just then, as he was stepping forward to start another cycle of rounds by the crashsite, he felt his foot hit something that was jutting out of the ground, and he fell forward with a yelp. Octavius cursed under his breath, feeling a slight pain shoot through his leg from the impact. But he froze and forgot all about it when he saw what it was that he tripped on.
It was no rock, or stick as he had initially believed when it happened. It was a boot, sticking out of the snow.
Octavius gasped when he saw that it wasn't just a boot, but a boot attached to the very cowboy he was looking for, submerged in the snow.
"Jedediah!" he cried, wasting no time in brushing the snow off the man.
The cowboy was laying very still, arms and legs spread out in an ungraceful sprawl. His face was turned to the side, mouth slightly parted in unconsciousness.
Octavius made a noise of dismay, reaching out to gently shake his shoulder, "Jedediah?"
Nothing.
"Jedediah... do awaken," he pleaded, shaking him a little harder on the other man's shoulder.
Still nothing.
The Roman general groaned in exasperation. "Jedediah." How was it that even in unconsciousness he was stubborn?
But Octavius was not going to give up.
"I shall not quit you," he said, echoing Jed's earlier words as he began to press down on the cowboy's chest in a series of compressions.
It was in vain, though. Jed was still unresponsive.
Octavius sighed. It looked like there was only one other thing to do. And it was not giving up.
"Very well," he said to himself, turning Jed's face upwards and tilting his head back. "If you shall not breathe with life on your own, then I shall breathe life into you," he concluded with resolution.
What he didn't know, though, as he prepared himself to administer the CPR, was that his previous efforts did work. The cowboy's lids began to twitch, and it was the moment Jed felt a breathing on his face that he opened his eyes, taken aback at finding the Roman nearly nose to nose with him and inching closer to his face still.
He put a stop to it right away. "Whatever you're thinkin', boy, I suggest you stop thinkin' it."
Octavius gasped, jerking back and blinking in astonishment. "J-Jedediah!" he stammered.
"That's my name, don't wear it out," Jed joked, though the laughter that followed came out sounding weak and a little strained. And the next moment, the cowboy hissed in pain and clutched at his ribs.
"Jedediah! You are injured," Octavius exclaimed, worry evident in his expression.
"Ah, no," Jed replied, trying to dismiss the matter. "It ain't so bad. Just a lil banged up n' bruised, but ain't nuthin' to cry 'bout."
Still, Octavius couldn't help but fret. "Are you sure? Perhaps we should check for blood..."
Jed gave him a funny look. "But we're plastic, partner. We ain't gon' bleed."
"Oh. Right." Octavius looked at him uncertainly. "Would you would be able to move?"
Jed assessed himself for a second, and then nodded. "I should. Wouldja mind helpin' me out, though?"
"Most certainly," Octavius assured him. He extended his hand out to Jed, which the cowboy took in his grasp. Then, carefully, the Roman helped him get back on his feet.
"Woah now," the cowboy said, wobbling a little as he attempted to get his footing on the uneven ground.
Octavius held him by the arm until he did.
"Steady does it," he said, relieved when Jed was able to successfully plant his feet without stumbling.
Jed thanked the Roman and then brushed the remaining snow that was on his front off of himself. "Whew!" he exhaled. "That sure was one doozy of a fall... how long were we out?"
"I'm not certain," Octavius admitted. He looked up into the sky, but didn't see it much differently than he had earlier in the night. Above the trees still stood a pitch black sky, dotted with the occasional distant stars.
Jed in the meantime looked determinedly at the pathway ahead of them. "Well. That rascal couldn't've gotten that far. We can still catch 'em if we tried!"
Octavius, truthfully, did not want to try. He was worn out, both from the crash and the chase that had happened just before it. And, there was also something else. Something else that he had to let his companion know of.
"Jedediah?" he said tentatively. "I believe we should go back... to the museum, that is."
The cowboy whirled on him. "What? Why? That tablet could be long gone with the wind by now!"
Octavius shook his head. "I don't believe that it is. Larry has successfully completed the mission."
Jed looked confused. "What... but... how do you know?"
Octavius rubbed the back of his neck, hoping he didn't sound foolish.
"Well... perhaps it is only in my imaginings, but... I have a certain feeling. A sort of... pull to have us return."
Jed was giving him a baffled look.
"Perhaps you could sense it as well?" the Roman suggested.
The cowboy didn't really feel like disagreeing or calling him crazy. The night was wild enough as it was without them butting heads. So he tried to understand what Octavius was saying, facing the opposite direction of the path they'd been chasing the old nightguard on - the direction where they'd come from - and closing his eyes.
At first, he felt a bit silly. All he could feel was the cold breeze and the still night.
But then, he felt it.
He wasn't sure what to call it, or what it was. But it was as Octavius had described. A pull. Like a mystical tug in the direction of their home rather than the woodland that was Central Park. Was it a sixth sense? Was it the tablet's magic at work? Whatever it was, it was there, that was for sure. He opened his eyes and raised his brows in astonishment.
Octavius by this point was standing to the side, shaking his head. "I suppose it was only myself," he murmured, the assumption made when Jed hadn't said anything for several moments. "I should have known that - "
"Now hold your horses there, Oct," Jed interrupted him, putting a hand up. "Call me crazier than a road lizard, but... I can feel it, too."
The Roman looked at him in amazement. "You can?"
Jed nodded slowly. "Yeah. I can." He glanced at the Roman sincerely, no quip or slick comment attached.
Octavius cleared his throat after a moment. "Yes, well. I suppose we should begin to head off," he reasoned.
"Mmm-hmm," Jed agreed. "Say, uh, don't suppose the car's still salvageable, is it?"
"I highly doubt that," Octavius admitted, gesturing over to the heap of burned metal and plastic that used to be the toy Humvee.
Jed took one look and kicked the snow in frustration with his boot. "Aw, hell." Then he sighed. "A'ight then. May as well get started." He began to walk in the direction that they'd driven the car, Octavius sticking closely by his side.
The packed snow crunched underneath their sandals and boots as they went along, breaths coming out in puffs with the frigid temperature in the air.
Jed rubbed his hands up his arms. "Gonna be a long way back, boy," he mused.
Octavius wrapped his cape tighter around himself, slightly envying the long-sleeves that the cowboy had. But one look at the genuine concern on the cowboy's face made that envy go away. Rivalry or no rivalry, he'd still known Jed for a long time. Which meant that he knew that the cowboy would never dare to show vulnerability like this, especially in the face of his enemy. His concern was real, and Octavius couldn't blame him. He was worried, too. They were small, a hard fact they'd known since the very beginning. If they didn't arrive in time, before those sun rays lit up the city, they would crumble to dust, never to be seen again. Octavius swallowed down the fear of that happening, putting on a brave face for the man.
"We will make it, Jedediah. I trust that we can."
Jed gave him a look of disbelief, but didn't say anything against it. He was quiet for a minute, unusual for a boisterous man of his kind, before he spoke again.
"You coulda been a lot closer, ya know," he said.
Octavius paused, confused. "Pardon?"
"To the museum," Jed explained. "Okay, well, maybe not there yet, y'know, since it's still a distance, but at least a whole lot closer than we are now."
Octavius furrowed his brows. "I don't understand..."
Jed sighed and stopped in his tracks. Octavius stopped, too. The cowboy faced him, looking the man seriously in the eyes, blue into brown.
"Listen, 'Tavius. Truth of the matter is, you had every chance to take off the second you woke up again."
Octavius blinked. "After the crash?"
"Well, yeah, what else?" Jed replied. "Ya coulda just left me for dead. Went back to the museum and ain't ever hafta deal with me again. Ain't nobody was stoppin' you from doin' it!"
Octavius shook his head. "Why... no. That's preposterous! Why would I leave you behind?"
"You got a fog in your brain, boy?" Jed replied. "We ain't ever get along! So why'd you save me?"
Octavius scoffed. "You speak as though you wished to die."
"'Course not," Jed replied. "I'm just tryna wrangle my thoughts and understand."
"Well..." Octavius began, thinking about what to say. "If you had been in my situation, Jedediah - awakening first, that is - would you have left me behind?"
Jed paused. He shook his head. "No way, kemosabe."
Octavius pressed on. "Why is that? You loathe me, do you not?"
"Octavius, it wouldn't've felt right leavin' ya there like a piece of roadkill," Jed huffed. "I gotta better conscious than that. The Wild West can be fulla rascals, but I ain't one of 'em. Gotta set an example for my folks back home, too. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer, right?"
Octavius hummed, not really agreeing, not really denying. He observed Jed. The man had stopped talking, but there was something about his demeanor that told him that he wasn't quite done yet.
"Is there anything more you wish to say?" Octavius asked.
"No," Jed replied, but then he shrugged and changed his mind, kicking at a snow tuft. "Well, maybe."
Octavius regarded him. âGo on,â he prompted.
Jed sighed. âWell, see, the thing is⊠IâŠâ The cowboy said something to complete that sentence, but heâd said it so fast and so low that Octavius couldnât catch it.
"Excuse me?"
"I said, you ain't so bad of a guy as I thought ya were! There," Jed huffed, looking mildly embarrassed and tucking his hat further down upon his head in an attempt to shield his eyes.
Octavius couldn't help but chuckle. "Jedediah, there is no need to feel shame. I've come to find that, well, I do share the same sentiments in regards to you."
Jed managed to meet his eyes. "Come again?"
"I mean to say that you are not the man I previously thought you were," the Roman general explained. "I saw nothing more than a barbarian before. Today - tonight, I should say - I saw a man who exemplified bravery in the face of danger, and who did not so easily give up even in the midst of perils."
"Hey, I meant it when I said I wasn't quitin' you," Jed said sincerely.
"Yes," Octavius said, and then went on. "I suppose what I am trying to state is that I saw a man... well... a man not much unlike myself, I should say."
Jed snorted. "Ego, much?"
Octavius gaped for a moment, but Jed laughed the next second, showing that he really wasn't annoyed.
"Just playin', boy. I get exactly what you mean. Iâm glad you stuck it out with me.â
âLikewise,â Octavius said. âAnd⊠that is the reason I had to rescue you, Jedediah. A brave warrior such as yourself should not have been left alone to die. You are courageous, my friend.â
At that, Jed gave him a bewildered look. âFriend?â he repeated.
âWell⊠do you not think of me as such?â Octavius asked. He suddenly worried. Maybe he had overstepped his boundaries, was taking things too quickly between them. After all, one night of setting aside differences and working together was not going to erase the tense decades-long history of feuding they had.
Jed had gone quiet again. He was thinking. Thinking hard. The pensiveness was clear as day. Slowly, he turned to Octavius.
"LookâŠâ he sighed, âI know we ainât always seen eye to eye, and our relationshipâs been real⊠rocky at times.
âRight,â Jed agreed. âBut⊠heck⊠I think all them years of fightinâs been long enough. Iâm ready to let this be water under the bridge, if you are.â
âSo⊠a truce, perhaps?â Octavius asked.
Jed looked at him, and the hand that he had extended. There was some slight skepticism on his face, but it was only fleeting, because it was gone the next moment, when he grinned and gave the other man's hand a firm shake.
From there, the pair focused solely on their trek back, trudging through the snow, plowing against the biting wind, and, all the while, keeping a close eye on one another. The journey felt like it took forever, and the sky began to brighten. It wasn't quite the break of dawn yet, being that the sun's rays weren't out, but it wasn't quite the dead of night, either, with the dark blanket that was the sky being a deep, navy blue color rather than a pitch black.
Finally, though, they managed to get back.
"There it is!" Jed shouted, pointing at the loading dock where they'd started their adventure outside of the museum in the first place.
"We made it," Octavius breathed, exhausted but happy.
"Yeah. But it ain't over just yet," Jed pointed out, gesturing out to the stairs that led up to the doorway. To anyone else, they were regular stairs. To them, well, it was like climbing several cliffs.
Octavius felt tired just looking at it. "Right..." he sighed. There was no way around it.
But just then he felt his spirits lift a little when Jed patted him on the back and gave him a small smile. "I don't wanna either, but I'll help you if you help me, partner."
Octavius returned the smile. "Very well."
Little by little, they were making it. One would boost the other up - Octavius lifting Jed, and Jed lifting Octavius - and then alternating as they went up the steps.
It was worth the greeting they got in the end.
âDad⊠look!â
It was Nick, the son of the nightguard happily pointing down at them.
Teddy Roosevelt, now repaired from his own mishap, glanced at the pair and gave a delighted laugh.
Larry didnât say a word, but the relief and joy on his face was enough said. A grin spread on his face to see the two little miniatures, no matter if they were covered in soot or looked like theyâd just been traveling for ages. They were there, thatâs what counted.
Jed beamed up at the nightguard - Larry, he remembered he was called - proud to have Octavius by his side.
âYou ainât gettinâ rid of us that easily,â he said with a grin.
Octavius, feeling just as proud and accomplished as Jed, held his head up high, giving the Roman salute to Larry and Teddy. They returned it, just as they returned Jedâs cowboy salute when he did it right afterwards. Then the pair, much to their relief, headed back inside to the museum, making a beeline to the Hall of Miniatures.
âThank goodness,â Jed said, wiping his brow as he looked up into the Wild West diorama.
âA sight to bring relief, I should say,â Octavius agreed, his own sights set on Rome. Before he left, he turned back to Jed once more. âWell, I suppose this is where we part ways.â
âRight,â Jed said. He stuck his hand out to the Roman general. âWas a pleasure workinâ with ya, Oct.â
âAs it was with you as well, Jedediah,â Octavius agreed, taking Jedâs hand once more and shaking.
âLookinâ forward to the nights ahead,â Jed said, a certain excitement in his voice.
Octavius smiled. âAs am I. Until then, farewell, Jedediah.â
âSee ya âround, Oct.â
Neither man could say that they were the best of friends just yet. But, it was a step in the right direction.
Jed hollered in time with the scream Octavius let out.
"AHHHH! Jedediah!"
Octavius squeezed his eyes shut, afraid to see if they would make it or not. Why he had agreed to this was beyond him. If it were up to him, they would be taking a leisurely drive around the museum, as they had done before. Not sitting in the car, hoping against hope that they'd be able to successfully complete the crazy leap off a ramp and over ten crates!
He gave a startled yelp when he felt the car land roughly, finding that, by some miracle, they were able to land on the ramp that was on the other side.
Jed skid the car to a stop, a big grin on his face.
"We made it!" he cheered, pumping a fist in the air. "YEEHAW! Now that was somethin', right partner?"
"Indeed... something I shall never do again!" Octavius huffed, making quickly to undo his seatbelt and thrust the car door open so he could escape.
Jed glanced at him, bewildered. "Woah, woah there, Oct! Slow it down! Where you off to in such a hurry?"
The cowboy caught up to him and grabbed his arm. The Roman whirled around.
"Jedediah, I shall not partake in activities that are bound to have us killed!"
"Aw, c'mon, Oct! You ain't gotta worry 'bout that, we were perfectly safe! Live a little, will ya?"
"I do plan to live," Octavius quipped, "which is the reason for my refusal to partake in such activities!"
Jed frowned a little, but at the same time, he didn't want to upset him. True, he had been, as of late, daring to get more and more adventurous with what he could do with the car, having obstacles set up - sometimes with the help of Larry, sometimes with the help of his and Octavius's own men, or the other exhibits - so they could ride them. Maybe, he mused, it was time to tone it down a little.
"All right, look," Jed sighed. "We don't gotta go off stuntin' if it really makes ya that uncomfortable. It's just 'sposed to be all in good fun, but I won't do it if you ain't havin' any. You got my word on that, 'kay partner?" He gave a light playful punch on the other manâs arm and grinned, showing he meant no harm.
Octavius also sighed. "I shall take your word on it," he said. "However... I do wish to maneuver the vehicle the next time."
Jed raised a brow at him. "Uh... you sure 'bout that, pal?"
"Yes..." Octavius said, peering at Jed questioningly. "Why?"
"Oh. Er... no reason."
The Roman narrowed his eyes. "You do not believe I am capable of doing so."
Jed put his hands up. "Woah, now, I ain't ever said that."
Octavius scoffed. "Jedediah, I can assure you I would be able to drive with no issues, and successfully manage our vehicle. In fact, it is probable I should do a better job than you."
"Hey, those are fightin' words mister!" Jed said with a frown.
"There is no reason to quarrel when the facts are as they are, Jedediah," Octavius said, an air of cockiness to him.
"Oh, yeah? Go 'head 'n put your money where your mouth is, boy!" Jed challenged.
Octavius put his guard down a moment to be confused. "Come again?"
Jed rolled his eyes. "I mean prove it, Oct," he said, gesturing to the open car door on the driver's side.
Octavius straightened up and put on a look of determination. "Very well. I shall."
The Roman all but stomped over to the driver's seat of the car, shutting the door behind him and settling in. Jed went over to the passenger's side, settling himself as well. Once they were both buckled in, he crossed his arms and gave Octavius a look that said "Well?"
Octavius ignored him and focused on beginning. Only... the driver's side was not what he expected. There were a few pedals on the floor, a gear shift with several settings that he could barely tell the difference between, and a dashboard chockfull of all sorts of buttons.
He gulped. This didn't look as easy as he thought. Jed had made it seem that way, the way his hands knew just where to go and when. Heck, the night the tablet was stolen was the first time Jed even drove, and it felt like he'd been doing it for ages!
Octavius pondered what to do... maybe a bit too long. He heard a chuckle next to him. He turned to find an amused look on Jed's face.
"Need some help gettin' started, partner?"
Octavius stubbornly refused. "Of course not," he said, sounding like he was disgusted at the thought of even being offered the help.
"Oh, yeah? Then what're those for?" Jed asked, pointing down to the pedals below Octavius's feet.
The Roman cursed the man in his head, for his question and for the smirk on his face that showed he knew Octavius was practically clueless to the answer. But Octavius wasn't going to let it get to him. He replied as coolly as he could. "This one here," he said, tapping the pedal he was referring to lightly with his right foot, "is the go. And this one," he said, tapping the other pedal with his left foot, "is the... stopper."
"It's called a brake, partner," Jed corrected.
"It is the same difference, Jedediah!" Octavius huffed in annoyance.
"Sure it is," Jed said, still chuckling. "And what's that for one?" he asked, pointing to the other pedal, next to the "stopper" on the left.
Octavius blinked. "Well..." He tried to press down on it, but it wasn't doing anything. Did it even have a purpose? The Roman gave a frustrated little groan. "Well," he said again, "I'm sure it hardly matters as much as this does," he concluded, putting his hand on the gear shift. He'd seen Jed use it plenty of times.
"All right. I'll letcha slide with that," Jed said. "So... what are you gonna do with that?" he asked about the gear shift.
"Uh..." Octavius looked at it. He saw little pictures and letters, but hadn't a clue as to what they meant. His fingers hovered over the gear shift, uncertain. Finally, he decided to take a chance with 'N.' But when he pressed down on the gas pedal, nothing happened.
He thought he heard the sound of a stifled laugh, but when he looked up at Jed, the cowboy was looking out the window, whistling.
Octavius frowned and tried the 'L' setting next, pleased to find that the car was moving. However, despite the motion, it was moving very slowly.
Octavius heard the sound from earlier again, and whipped his head up in time to find Jed seemingly coughing into his hand. Octavius knew otherwise, though. It was a poorly disguised cough, being that he could see Jed's smile behind his gloved hand, clear as day.
Not wishing to give up, Octavius turned back to the gear shift and switched it to the 'D' setting. And then the car started to lurch forward at a better speed.
"Atta boy!" Jed congratulated him. "Third time's the charm!"
Octavius shot him a look. "I hardly need your encouragement," he grumbled, truthfully a bit embarrassed for how long it took him to figure out. Jed would've been long gone on the road by now! But, he didn't mind that now. Now that he was moving, he focused on the driving, briefly adjusting the overhead mirror, checking out to the 'road' ahead (really just the sleek hallway floor), and peeking at the mirrors outside the car too. All in all, Octavius felt like he was doing pretty good. Well, except for one thing.
"Oooct," Jed complained, "this thing's movin' as slow as molasses!"
Octavius opened his mouth to protest, but quickly shut it again. While the stunts and obstacle courses made him feel uneasy, he'd be lying to say that he didn't enjoy the high-speed thrill of the car whenever it sped along. After all, he'd be whooping right alongside Jed as they raced through Central Park that first time. He relented. "I suppose I could speed up," he said, carefully pressing his foot harder on the gas pedal. The car accelerated forward faster than he anticipated, but it was an error taken in good stride. A smile stretched on Jed's face.
"All right! Now we're gettin' somewhere!"
Octavius couldn't help grinning, too. He was the one in control, and it felt good - the wheel in his grip, the revving of the engine in his ears, the sound of Jed laughing next to him.
He gave his own cheer and dared to press down on the gas even further. "WHOOO!"
"Yeah, boy! Now you see why I like it so much!" Jed shouted joyously.
Octavius laughed and Jed hollered, the two men thoroughly enjoying themselves so far as Octavius careened them down the halls. The cowboy looked over at the Roman.
"Know what, pal? You ain't such a bad driver after all!" Jed said.
Octavius beamed at the compliment, even more pleased that the doubt was seemingly erased from Jed's mind. "Do you mean it?" he asked, turning to look at the other man.
Jed was grinning at first, but the expression changed in a split second to that of alarm. "Octavius, LOOK OUT!"
The Roman jerked his eyes to the road, gasping. There was a herd of the African mammals, all stampeding their way!
"Great Jupiter!" he exclaimed, and upon instinct shielded his eyes... with both of his hands!
"'Tavius, NO! Don't let go!" Jed screamed, prying his right hand free and securing it back on the wheel. The cowboy kept his hand on firmly top of Oct's, jerking it to and fro on the wheel to help him swerve all the stomping hooves and paws that came their way. Several times they were missed by a hair, and once a zebra's hoof clipped one of the side mirrors, but they managed to get through undamaged.
Jed sat back in his seat in relief when they were out. "Whew!" he breathed, removing his hat and fanning himself with it. "That was close."
"JEDEDIAHHH!"
Octavius's scream immediately got the cowboy back to being alert. He spotted the reason for the Roman's fear - they were heading straight for a wall!
"TURN THE WHEEL, OCT!"
"Which way??"
"Right!"
Octavius was confused. "But we will hit the other wall!"
Jed was insistent, though. "We gotta turn right to go left!"
"Jedediah, that hardly makes sense!"
"IT'LL WORK, TRUST ME!"
"Jedediah..."
"Land sakes! Gimme that!"
Jed grabbed hold of the wheel with one of his hands, trying to turn the car one way.
Octavius resisted against him, trying to turn the other way.
"NO!"
"Quit fightin' me!"
"Jedediah, remove yourself!"
"You get off first!"
"JEDEDIAH!"
What resulted was the car turning neither way - it spun out! The car went in circles, spinning donuts and screeching its tires loudly.
Even louder were the cowboy and Roman's screams.
"AAAAAHHHH!"

******************************
Larry, who had been busy listening to another one of Teddy's long-winded tales, heard the sound of the crash from all the way on the other side of the museum. Teddy himself heard it, too, and stopped talking as soon as it resounded. He gaped at the nightguard.
"Good heavens, Lawrence! What on earth was that?"
"I don't know... but I'm about to find out," he replied, quickly dashing off in the direction that he'd heard it.
It wasn't hard to find the spot, being that there were several folks already gathering around the area. Larry excused himself past some Neanderthals and Huns, the sight before him making his brows raise in surprise.
Below him he saw what used to be the toy car that he got for his miniature friends, only it was crushed, and its wheels were rolling away from the crash site. All four of them. Next to it were Jed and Octavius.
"You all right, boy?" the cowboy asked the Roman.
Octavius looked himself over, and then nodded. "Yes. I think so."
"Oh, good. Now I can do this!" Jed said, rearing his fist back and punching Octavius in the shoulder.
"OW!" the Roman yelped.
"I done spoke too soon when I said you were a good driver!" Jed shouted.
"Me?" Octavius said, appalled. "Should I remind you, Jedediah, that you were the one giving me preposterous instructions!"
"You guys!" Larry interrupted. "What happened?"
Right at the exact same time, Jed and Octavius pointed at each other and said the same exact thing.
"HE crashed the car!"
Octavius whirled on Jed. "I am not to blame!"
"Well, I ain't, either!"
"Somebody is."
"That somebody ain't me."
"Do not look at me, Jedediah. Take a look at your own reflection."
"Not before you do!"
"Guys," Larry groaned. Were they really going to fight right now?
Jed and Octavius glared at each other, each one trying to outdo their evil eye.
Then, just as Larry was sure that the fists would start flying, they did the unexpected - and burst out laughing.
Larry stared down at them, more confused than ever.
"Did... did I miss something?" he asked Atilla, who was next to him.
The Hun just shrugged.
Jed slung an arm around Octavius. "Boy, we're as crazy as road lizards, you 'n me."
"You are the 'crazier' one," Octavius quipped.
Jed snorted. "That's just a matter of opinion," he said. Then he glanced at their ruined vehicle. "Well. We ain't got a car now. Any other ideas?"
Octavius thought. "Hmm... I have the chariot," he suggested.
The cowboy looked at him curiously. "What's that?"
"A wagon of sorts, pulled by horses," Octavius explained. "It's a splendid form of transportation in Rome."
"Hmm," Jed said, thinking. "Does it go fast?"
Octavius thought some more. "Perhaps not as quickly as the car did, but I should say fast enough."
Jed grinned a toothy grin. "That's all I needed to hear!" he exclaimed. "Let's go!"
"Jed! Octavius! Wait!" Larry called, but they were already making their way out of there, Jed pulling Octavius by the wrist behind him.
With their departure, the gathered crowd started to leave, too. Except for Larry. He sighed, stooping down to clean up the remains of the car.
It wasn't long before something whooshed past him. Larry double-took, and saw that the miniatures were back, this time in the very chariot that Octavius had been mentioning.
"Onward, my noble steeds!" Octavius called to the horses, shaking the reins.
Jed was whooping next to him. "WaHOOO! We're just livin' the dream, Gigantor!"
Larry shook his head, sweeping up the last of the broken car. But he couldn't stop the little smirk that grew on his face.
Our Last Night - part 1 (a Night at the Museum fanfic)
Summary: With the tablet remaining in London, Octavius is faced with the fact that he may never be able to see Jedediah again; Taking place in NATM 3 Secret of the Tomb
A/N: Hi!! I'm new to this fandom (even though I have been lurking for almost a year now, lmao) writer and artist here â Anyway I'm posting this fic as part of the Exhibit of the Week event that @natmarchivist is running, this week Octavius is being highlighted. This is a 2 part fic, 2nd part will be posted when it's Jed's week :)
And yes I know there's tons of versions of this scene/scenario written, but here's my take on it anyway
"Well. I'm guessin' this is where we go off partin' ways, partner."Â
Octavius peered over at Jed.Â
Larry had just left the two of them, and they were the only ones left in the Hall of Miniatures. Well, the only ones alive.Â
With the tablet having been brought out of the Natural history museum by the time nightfall had hit, nobody else had come alive except those whoâd traveled with it. Of them included a handful of exhibits â Teddy, Sacajawea, Atilla, Laa.Â
And of course, each other.Â
Looking around now, Octavius thought again about what Jed had said a few short moments ago to Larry. About how it was quiet. It was a preview of what it would be like from now on at the museum. Because the tablet had stayed behind at the British Museum in London, along with Ahkmenrah.Â
Which now meant that everyone else would no longer come to life.Â
It was a hard pill to swallow, and a reality that Octavius partly wished he wasnât in. But it was as it was. Everyone had made the decision together. But a part of the Roman couldnât help but be the smallest bit selfish...
"We do not have to, you know," he said in response to Jed.
The cowboy looked at him. "What?"
Octavius scuffed the floor with his sandal. "We could simply stay as we are, here. Together. We could even, well... remain in embrace or something similar..."
He ducked his head down shyly after he suggested it. After all, like Jed said once, they were men. And in being men they typically didn't go off showcasing emotion like this with one another. They usually just roughed it together, sharing laughs and things. But this was a serious moment, the way he saw it.
When he managed to peer up at Jed, the other man actually looked like he might have been considering what Octavius was saying. There was a gleam in his eye that made the whole somber mood of the moment uplift just a little. But the next moment that uplifty feeling disappeared as Jed shook his head.
"Naw, Octy. As much as I like the way it sounds, we can't go off doin' that. You remember what we told Larry, right? We're museum exhibits. Folks n' their youngins'll look at us and learn a lil something."
Octavius nodded somberly, knowing he was right. They had a responsibility. Still, though, he wished things were different...
Jed was looking at him now with a smile that had a sort of sadness behind it, and he gave the Roman a playful little nudge with his shoulder.
"Gonna miss me, ain't ya?"
It's meant to sound a bit teasing, the way Jed always was with him, but Octavius can't find himself replying with his own usual sarcastic reply. If he did, he probably would've blatantly denied the cowboy, saying something like "Miss you? Hardly," and scoff.
This time, he just nodded again.
"Yes," he says, in a low, soft voice. "I shall. And... very much so..."
He knows he's sounding watery there towards the end of his words, but he doesn't care. This is the type of emotion that this moment was stirring in him. That Jed was stirring in him.
And Jed doesn't respond in his usual way, either, which would be a tease that Octavius got the "waterworks goin'." He instead opens his arms and murmurs a gentle "C'mere."
He's looking the same way he had when he was bidding Larry a goodbye, and while before it made Octavius sort of roll his eyes (I mean, it wasn't completely possible for a miniature to hug a full grown person, after all) right now it's exactly what he needs.
Octavius chuckles, that chuckle morphing into a light sob as he connects the two, wrapping his arms wholly and heartily around the cowboy.Â
He hears Jed sigh, alternating between patting his back and rubbing it in soothing motions, which Octavius reciprocates. Honestly, he could stay in that moment forever. Letting go of the man and not knowing when heâll be able to see him again was a thought that made those stray tears slip out of his eyes as he lightly wept.
âIâm gonna be missinâ you too, boy,â Jed whispered into his ear. âMore than you can imagine.â Octavius heard a sniffle a second later, followed by a chuckle. âShoot. Makinâ me go all leaky, Octy.âÂ
They parted, and Jed took the opportunity to wipe at his own eyes, that sorrowful smile still on his face.Â
When he got himself recomposed, he locked his eyes on Octavius, and cowboy and Roman gaze at each other - blue on brown, and brown on blue - like theyâre trying to drink in every detail, to emblazon it into memory before the inevitable sunrise came.Â
And then Octavius took a chance. He reached down, finding Jedâs hand and taking it in his. Part of him thinks maybe Jed will resist. After all, the cowboy hadnât wanted to hold his hand when theyâd gotten stuck in the heating vents. And even though heâd done so on the rooftop over in London, it was when they were thinking they were about to die.Â
But Jed doesnât resist. The cowboy looked down and easily interlaced their fingers together, grasping tight as he looked back up at Octavius, who goes forth with the most difficult part of all this.
"Farewell, Jedediah," he murmured softly.Â
But Jed shook his head. "Don't go off sayin' that, kemosabe.âÂ
Octavius furrowed his brow a little, confused, until Jed spoke up again.Â
âIt ain't a goodbye. It's a âtil next next time.â"Â
It only worked to somber Octaviusâ mood a little more. It really was wishful thinking, the way he saw it.
"But... there may not be a next time..." the Roman pointed out. He wasnât keen on bursting Jedâs bubble, but the reality check was necessary.Â
But Jed only shrugged, with a hopeful glint in his blue eyes. "I'm havin' a feelin' there will be."Â
Octavius didnât know why, but he almost felt like he believed him. Sure, heâs still wondering what would prompt the tablet to make its return to their museum, but he didnât give it much thought, instead using those last precious moments to just live in the few moments left with Jed.
"Very well, then," Octavius said, lightly squeezing the cowboy's hand and smiling gently at him.Â
When you have time could you do a one shot of poppy fan girling over the fact that her bf is in two famous boy bands? I wish the movie gave a little more of it focused on him because the adoration is so cute to me.
Yes, here it is! :D
Surprise (a Trolls fanfic)
âHey, Branch? Itâs almost showtime, I was just thinking that maybe we couldâŠâ
The Pop Queen cut off her own question with an enormous gasp.
âWHHHHHAAAAAAT?!?!â
It was simply impossible for her to believe the sight in front of her. Granted, she knew some of what she would find when she ventured backstage to find her boyfriend. She knew of his brothers, and of how they were the sensational boyband known as BroZone. But what she did not at all anticipate were the four other Trolls who made up the other insanely popular boyband that there had been back in the day.Â
And, recalling that that band had had five members - and seeing that her boyfriend was costumed to the same chic style they were wearing at that moment - it suddenly all made sense in a whirlwind of revelation.
âKismet?â she exclaimed in a squeak, pointing a shaky hand at Branch. âYou were in BroZone AND Kismet? And you⊠didnât⊠tell me?!â She shot her gaze at the brothers. âGuys, did you know about this?â
They hurriedly denied.
âIâm just as surprised as you are, Pops,â John Dory admitted.
âNot a clue,â Bruce answered.
âNope,â Clay said, putting his hands up and taking a couple steps back, while Floyd replied with a mystified âUh-uh,â and a small shake of his head.
At this point, Poppy wasnât even sure how she was still able to keep standing there - she was trembling so much from the excitement building up inside of her, she was just about ready to collapse!
Branch himself shrugged, keeping collected. âSurprise,â he chuckled.
Poppy couldnât help herself anymore. Forgetting about everything but being filled with happiness - and not being able to coherently form any other sentences - she rushed forward and threw her arms around Branchâs neck, screaming in delight. Then, she rushed to hug each of his friends, taking Hype, Ablaze, Boom, and Trickee off guard with her uncontained enthusiasm and bone-crushing embrace. And then still, she leapt over towards JD, Bruce, Clay, and Floyd, hugging them for good measure, too!
Hype shook his blue head with a smirk. "Well, that's some girl you got there, Branch!" he exclaimed.
"And this is some sneaky secret-keeping boyband-extraordinaire boyfriend I've got!!" Poppy shouted, finding her voice again and nearly dizzying all nine men with all her jumping up-and-down on the spot. And now that she was speaking again, she couldnât seem to stop! The words tumbled out of her a hundred miles a minute.
âThis is incredible! I really really REALLY canât believe this! Iâm so excited I could SCREAM! I think I will scream! AAAIIYYIII!!! Okay, okay, Iâm done now. No, just kidding, Iâm actually not. AHGHGH! Iâm not gonna be over this for, like, a SUPER long time! I, like, REALLY need all of your autographs, too. Ooo! And a picture! Well, more like a dozen pictures with you guys. And then Iâm gonna need copies! And then copies of the copies!! And⊠and⊠would it be weird if I fainted right now? Because I totally feel like Iâm gonna faint right now, hehe!â
And she did. Expended, she keeled over with that ear-to-ear smile still plastered on her face. Branch caught her right before she fell to the ground, and carried her in his arms.
âIâll be back in a sec,â he said to his friends and brothers, smirking at the Pop Queen. âIâm gonna get her situated in the front row. Then we can get this show rolling, alright?â
And thatâs just what he did, leaving Kismet and BroZone to themselves.
Both boybands looked at each other awkwardly, not sure what to say to each other. At least, until Floyd broke the ice, smiling politely.

Summary: Poppy and Branch are out, seeking peace, quiet, and each other. Though, with four not-so-discreet snoopers around, that may not be so much of a possibility
A/N: Welcome to the next oneshot collection I've planned for TBT, "Brodacious!" (Also found on AO3, Wattpad, and Fanfiction.net under the same name) Can't wait to write for the Main 7, but of course, going to kick things off with a little Broppy ;) Think of this first one as a new edition (haha) of my oneshot from Trolls 3.0 "Setting the Mood" (ch 11) Rated G!

Being a queen was a lot of work.
Branch knew this about Poppy, even before she had officially placed the crown on her head and received the title. Seeing King Peppy run Pop village, and then Poppy succeeding him, he could tell that the duties eventually took their toll on the two Trolls.
But, in turn, thatâs what made quiet moments more appreciated. The times where sheâd have a break to share alongside Branch for just the two of them to do as they pleased were always cherished, even if it was something simple like staying in his bunker, cuddled on the couch, eating cupcakes and other sweets while whispering silly but sweet things to one another. Or whether it was something a little more planned, like the picnic date heâd taken her out for that evening.
Twilight had fallen, and the sky was painted a beautiful gradient shade of orange and purple. Stars began to dot the sky, and the glow bugs began to flutter out, adding beauty to the scene around them. Though to Branch, nothing was more beautiful than the sight of the pretty pink-haired Troll that he was proud to call his girlfriend, even if she had a little bit of frosting stuck to her cheek from the cupcake she was eating. But it was not to worry. Thatâs why she had him. He was her partner, the metaphorical king to her queen, and the cupcake-frosting-wiper to her cupcake-frosting-mess.
He chuckled, scooting a little closer and setting his own cupcake down on the picnic blanket so that he could reach up and dab at her cheek with a napkin. She giggled in spite of herself and not being more cautious to not make such a mess eating, and then looked up gratefully into his deep, blue eyes. Branch felt himself entranced by her fuchsia gaze as well, and his hand lingered on her cheek, using his thumb to caress the skin where her cute freckles were. The moment was so perfect â why, it even sounded like there was sweet music going off in his head just from looking at her so.
But⊠maybe it wasnât just in his head. Poppy blinked, coming out of her trance, and perked an ear. Branch did too, glancing around but not seeing anyone around just yet. Then he heard the voices a little more clearly â four very distinct and recognizable voices - and some rustling in the nearby bushes as an indicator of where it was coming from.
Not making a whole lot of effort to hide themselves much, Branch and Poppy could see the heads of John Dory, Clay, and Floyd peeking out from behind the bushes, harmonizing a melody, while Bruce took on the main vocals.
âThere, you see her,
Sitting there across the way,
She donât got a lot to say, but thereâs something about her...
And you donât know why but youâre dying to try
You wanna, kiss the girlâŠâ
Branch rolled his eyes as his other brothers added their own voices.
âYeah, you want her,
Look at her you know you do,
Itâs possible she wants you to,
But thereâs one way to ask her
One way to ask her
One way to ask herâŠ
Boy, you better do it soon,
No time would be better,
And it don't take a word, not a single word,
Go on, and kiss the girl, kiss the girlâŠâ
Poppy giggled a little at their antics, but then grimaced a little upon seeing the rather annoyed look on Branchâs face. She knew that Branch definitely didnât like this. She gently patted his hand. âHey,â she said softly, âwe can move somewhere else, you know.â
Branch glanced at her a bit deadpanned, but then a slight smirk tugged the corner of his lip. âActually, Iâd rather take the advice.â
And before Poppy could question what was going on, she was promptly tugged towards his face, his lips enveloping hers. Poppy sighed gratefully and returned the kiss as an eruption of wolf-whistles and jeering came from the other side of the bush.
âWoo-hoo! Way to go Branch the Heartthrob 2.0!â Bruce called out.
âCool as ice but with all the spice!â John Dory riffed.
Clay in the meantime elbowed his brothers and gestured out wildly towards the pair. âSee? SEE? Serious Boy Clay still has a couple of old tricks up his sleeve!â
âWay to go, Bromeo!â Floyd shouted to Branch encouragingly, clapping his hands.
But Poppy and Branch remained deaf to the brothers, their only focus being on the passion that they ignited between each other.

Summary: A month after his imprisonment, Veneer is paid a visit from someone he didnât think heâd ever see again
__________________________________________
âAw, noâŠâ
Veneer moaned to himself, slumping down on his cot and facepalming in dismay. He was so not in the mood for this. He never was. And today it was hitting especially hard. Maybe because it had been exactly a month since his incarceration. Maybe because his attempt to speak to his sister had resulted in the throbbing pain that plagued his left cheek. Or maybe because of the haranguing speech that he knew awaited him once he left his cell.
He peeked a glance at the guard awaiting him, arms crossed and eyebrow raised as if to say âWell? Are you coming or not? You may have all day, but not everybody else does!â They were usually stoic, poker-faced, and unsympathetic towards inmatesâ desires. Rightly so. Much of the prisoners were delinquents who, if shown even an ounce of freedom, would take it to the extreme. His own sister had learned the hard way when her request to have the ankle chain removed from her leg was surprisingly granted. The teen was quick to make a run for it, but even quicker to have been thwarted by the security. Veneer hadn't really seen Velvet around since, but from what he heard, she was taken into solitary confinement.
That was why he had made it his mission to be on his very best behavior. He'd speak when spoken to, eat the entire tray of slop that they called âfood,â and hit the hay as soon as lights out was called. He never looked for fights or started any, and mostly kept to himself. So maybe, just maaaybe, if he asked really nicely, he could get out of this.
âSay, you know what? I'm not really sure if I can do this. You think maybe we could pick some other time?â Veneer grinned, hoping he looked and sounded polite.
But the guard was unmoved. "NO.â
âBut⊠I'm really not feeling well!â It was a little true. Veneer's stomach was churning at the thought of leaving his cell for what was intended for him. In a desperate attempt, he clasped his hands together, stuck his bottom lip out in a pout and made his eyes big. âPretty pleeeease?â
The guard had an unreadable expression for a moment, before he raised his walkie talkie up to his mouth to speak. âIncrease the prison sentence for inmate number 8231978.â
Veneer dropped and act and gasped. âWhat? No! Okay, alright, I'll come!â
The guard humphed, unlocking the cell door so the teen could exit. With cuffs secured to his hands and an ankle chain to his left leg, the guard guided Veneer down the hallway.
The former Pop-star suppressed a groan and kept his eyes fixed to the ground. This was one of the parts he hated about this. The âWalk of Shame.â The glares he'd receive. The jeers sent his way. Veneer wished he could burrow himself in the ground if it meant he didn't have to see the dirty looks being cast at him. And if looks could kill⊠Veneer shuddered to think that he'd probably be dead many times over.
Among other treacherous felonies, it seemed Mount Rageons truly despised frauds. Veneer supposed he understood why. It broke a golden value that was very challenging to win back - trust. He needn't look any further for an example of that, not only with what he and his sister had done, but also for his own sentiments towards her now. The resentment over Velvetâs manipulation⊠and the painful sorrow he felt in his heart at her stubbornness in refusing to ever speak to him again.
He focused on the sound of the clinking chain rather than the colorful words of the other inmates, and felt only a fraction of relief once he was out of that hallway and brought into the next room over. Veneer stared at the familiar tile flooring beneath his feet. It was perhaps slightly more welcoming in sight than the cell units, for its brighter lights and fresher smell. But that's where the welcome wore out. So far, this room hadn't been a place of positivity for him.
Veneer lifted his head slightly to assess the scene today. The booths were not as busy as it could be, which he was silently grateful for. The less folks to see him, the better. Inmates, all donning the same shabby orange jumpsuit he had on, were seated at them and already engaged in their own conversations with the recipients on the other end of the glass that separated them. He heard snippets of the chatting as he passed by.
âSix more months in the brig, can you believe it? Six months! I'll be old and wrinkled by then - â
â - and you can't even tell the difference between the chicken and the broccoli sometimes. Ugh, it's awful! How can that even be allowed? That should be a crime!â
âFriends? In prison? Pfft, come on, dude! This isn't gradeschool - â
Veneer attempted to swallow down the lump in his throat, and thought about who his visitor would be this time around. Maybe it was a Mount Rageon, reminding him of how they used to be a fan of his music until he turned out to be a phony, while he sat, quietly mumbling an âI'm sorryâ that fell deaf upon their ears. Or, they could whisper about how they still liked him, and believed that the whole Troll-talent thing was an elaborate hoax to spice up the drama. Veneer hated that scenario more than the first, and he would get frustrated in explaining that his jail-time was deserved. Or maybe still, it could be his parents, there to chew him out and express their disappointment in him and his sister. The first time they'd come, Veneer had easily taken the verbal beating, but Velvet only had her anger spiked. He shuddered remembering the way she'd spewed a string of obscenities so foul, even a sailor would be put to shame.
Veneer didnât dare look up to see who it was at the booth when the guard told him to be seated. He just picked up the phone, and tried to sound somewhat alive as he mumbled into it.
âHello?â
âIt isn't as hip as your old pad, but at least it's something, huh?â
Veneer gasped, recognizing the serene voice at once, and whipped his head up. âFloyd?â
Sure enough, it was the teal Troll speaking into the phoneâs receiver. When Floyd offered a gentle smile, Veneer couldnât help grinning back. Floyd had that effect on folks, it seemed, one of shining positivity even in the darkest times. But that grin disappeared when he caught sight of the Trollâs hair, a rich sweep of magenta⊠save for the significant white streaks that ran through it. Ones that had been caused by Veneerâs own doing. The guilt bit at him, and the teen suddenly didnât feel comfort in his unexpected presence. âFloyd, what are you doing here?â
âWhat do you mean? I came to see you,â he answered simply.
âWhy?â Veneer asked, flailing his arms in a baffled manner. âIf I were you, Iâd be the last person Iâd wanna see!â It was only when the guard standing at the far end of the room had shot him a warning look that Veneer realized his outburst had been too loud, and he toned it down.
âThatâs not true, Veneer,â Floyd said, and then he smirked. âIâd say your sister wins in that category, wouldnât you?â
Veneer had to chuckle at that. âYeah, you are so not wrong there.â
Floyd laughed a little, too, and then spoke again. âBut even then, Iâm still gonna try to talk to her at some point, too.â
âGood luck with that,â the former Pop-star scoffed. âAnytime Iâve tried to talk to her, it just ends like this.â He turned his face to the side a little so Floyd could see the ugly purplish bruise that was his left cheek.
The Troll winced. âOuch.â
âOuch is right,â Veneer whimpered, gently touching the injury in hopes that perhaps it didnât throb as much. Nope. Still did. He pinched the bridge of his nose and gave an exasperated groan, unable to contain it in him anymore. âSo much for my sister not treating me like garbage. This has literally been the worst month of my life! Velâs never gonna talk to me again. This uniform stinks! And you can only chop so many rocks before it starts to get to your headâŠâ He huffed and heaved a sigh. âYouâre SO lucky you donât ever have to go through something like this. Youâve probably never done one bad thing in your life!â
Veneer expected him to agree right away, but became curious at Floydâs silence, and the shamed look accompanying it. âDonât be so sure.â
The teen cocked his head. âWha?â
The Troll nodded. âI did something twenty years ago that I regret to this very day.â
âGeez,â Veneer said, considering the amount of time. He was hardly twenty years of age himself! âWhat happened?â
âI abandoned my baby brother. I promised Iâd come back, but I never didâŠâ Floydâs voice got quieter as he continued to explain. âTurned out he wasnât as well off as I thought heâd be. Our Grandma died, and there wasnât anybody else to take care of him.â
Veneer winced. âOof. Sounds rough.â
âBelieve me, he let me know,â Floyd confirmed. âHe was pretty upset. But then do you know what happened?â
âWhat?â
âHe forgave me. Sure, itâs gonna take some time to heal the hurt of the past, but we know we can do it. And I'm confident that you and Velvet can do it, too.â
But Veneer disagreed. âHow can you say that?â he blurted. âYouâve seen Vel. Youâll have better luck talking to a brick wall! Itâs hopeless!â
Floyd paused for a moment, considering his next words. âYou know, I felt pretty hopeless inside that diamond. You seemed pretty in love with all that fame and money, and whatever other âbling-a-dingâ you hadâŠâ
âDonât remind me,â the teen whimpered, embarrassed for the selfish behavior heâd exhibited.
âAnd yet, you listened to me⊠didnât you?â
âYeahâŠâ he replied warily.
âThen I trust Velvet can with you.â
âBut you donât understand!â Veneer cried. âVel and I arenât the same! Well⊠not entirely,â he amended, recalling how he and she hadn't been so different when it came to their desires for fame and fortune. âJust because I listened doesnât mean Velvet will. That part of her that would listen has been long gone.â
Floyd cocked his head. âWhat part?â he pressed.
âOh, you know,â Veneer went on, âthe part that liked to make up bad dances, and didnât care if we sang off key, as long as we were having fun.â
âOhh,â The Troll said, nodding in understanding. âBut you never know. That part of her could still exist.â
Veneer gave a dry laugh. âYeah right.â
âIâm serious,â Floyd said. âSheâs still there. You just gotta help her find it again.â
The teen eyed the Troll. âYou really, truly think thatâs possible?â
âCross my heart, hope to die.â
âLetâs hope not,â Veneer said, feeling a shudder go down his spine as he remembered the way the Troll had gone transparent and nearly succumbed to death. But then he thought about what the magenta Troll said. Velvet being that sister she once was? It would be wonderful. âI guess she's been a diva for so long, I never thought it'd be possible for her to changeâŠâ
âIt is,â Floyd assured with a smile. âIt really is.â
Suddenly, a ping resounded, and he looked down at the bracelet on his wrist and gasped. âOh! I promised my brothers Iâd be only fifteen minutes. Otherwise, they wouldnât have even let me come. Theyâre outside waiting for me. Iâm sorry.â
Veneer nodded. âItâs all right, I understand. You donât have to apologize.â
âThanks. It was nice talking to you,â Floyd said sincerely. âOoo, and make sure you check the mail! The letter I sent should have arrived today.â
Veneer nodded again. âOh! Okay, I will. And it was nice talking to you, too!â
Floyd smiled, and was about to head off, when Veneer stopped him. âWait! I, um⊠do you have a quick second? I've been working on something⊠I was kinda hoping you might wanna hear it?â
As Floyd glanced at him expectantly, Veneer cleared his throat, suddenly second-guessing himself. What if he sounded awful? What if Floyd laughed at him? Regardless, heâd already stopped him, so he had to follow through. The song flowed out of him softly at first, his voice cracking a couple of times and making him inwardly cringe. But soon his voice became stronger, the notes rich and beautiful. When Veneer was done, he was met not only by applause from Floyd, but from the other inmates and recipients at the booths as well! He blushed as Floyd offered his compliments.
âThat was great!â
âAnd I swear it was all me,â Veneer hurriedly explained. âNo talent-stealing here!â
Floyd chuckled. âThatâs good. You really do have some real talent.â
Veneer shrugged. âGuess I just had to work hard at it.â
Floyd gave him a thumbs up. âRight.â Then he turned to go. âIâll see you around, Veneer.â
The Troll waved, and he waved back. A sense of uplifting filled Veneer. He was in slightly better spirits than he had anticipated himself to feel, and was glad for it. On his way back to the cell, he questioned the guard on any mail delivery for him, and true to Floydâs word, one letter, sealed with the BroZone lightning emblem, was awaiting him.
Veneer didnât waste a minute as he tore open the envelope and began to read:
Veneer,
Itâs amazing how time passes by so quickly. I can hardly believe itâs already been a monthâs time since the incident, of which I donât believe you need me to mention for you to know what Iâm talking about. But, I AM going to mention it anyhow, as it was an experience which has produced great effect. I also see this as an opportunity to debunk or confirm any assumptions you may have regarding me on the matter.
Spending two months encased within a small, and rather uncomfortable diamond imprisonment was, to put it bluntly, an awful experience for me to have undergone, as Iâm sure you can imagine. I canât lie there, or try to sugarcoat anything. Matters were not helped when you were under the impression that this was a necessary thing to do. But shortcuts can sometimes be more âcutâ than âshort,â as came to be you and your sisterâs case. But this is not to say that cuts canât heal. With time and learning they can, and from there, things are bound to get better.
In the same manner that everyone deserves to be treated kindly, everyone also deserves a second chance. I canât say that the first impression you left of me was a good one, but have an inkling that my sentiments will change in the near future. Know that you are forgiven for your actions, so long as you understand where your mistakes were, and so long as you have learned from it. I know I canât make you heed to any advice that I or anybody else may give you, though I strongly recommend taking it, for your own benefit.
I have been on my way to recovery from everything, and am living with my brothers. If you are interested, I can speak to the prison management team and see if we could get you work release at my older brotherâs cantina. Itâs on a beautiful little island that I think you will find quite becoming (plus, it has a karaoke stage!)
By this point, I would imagine that we would have already spoken to each other, and, should the conversation have gone the way I envisioned, I believe that we can likely look forward to speaking again.
Your friend,
Floyd
P.S. If you choose to respond to this letter, send it out attached with the postcard in the envelope. Trust me, it will get there :)
Veneer wondered what he meant by that last part, and soon understood when he pulled out the said postcard - with no return address or sender information. But, he shrugged it off. If Floyd had said it would get there, then surely it would get there! And so, Veneer got to work composing a return letter, finishing it with just a few seconds to spare before lights out. The letter looked something like this:
Floyd,
It was unexpected seeing you today. If I was in your place, I would have just moved on with my life and not looked back - especially at the guys who captured me. I want you to know that I am very, VERY sorry for what I did to you and regret it very much. You can take my word that I will never do something like that again to anybody. I was too afraid to say anything about it to my sister before, but now she knows where I stand on this. I hope youâre right and that she will come around one dayâŠ
Iâm glad to hear that you are recovering and hope that you continue to regain your health. I think that work release idea sounds great! (Although, Iâve never been to an island before⊠do you mind telling me a little bit about what itâs like?)
I was afraid to talk to you at first, but I actually did like the turnout of it and, if you have any time to spare in the future, I really would like for us to talk again!
Sincerely,
Veneer
P.S. Gonna try and have the full version of that song ready by the time you come back :)

A/N: I like the idea of Floyd and Veneer becoming friends after the whole ordeal
How do you think Trolls World Tour wouldâve played out if Branch reunited with Floyd who was living with the rock trolls but fled when he heard of Barbâs plan to find help to stop her only to run into Poppy and his little brother all grown up?
I think it perhaps would have played out a little something like this đ:
Between a Rock and a Hard Place (a Trolls fanfic)
âAAAHHHHHHH!â
The scream startled Branch and Poppy, the pair of them taken aback by the sight of their friend, Biggie, frantically scurrying through the crowd of Trolls in the Villageâs clearing. The cause of his fear was made apparent when the Trolls noticed a fuzzy, bat-like creature zipping along right behind him, flapping its leathery, black wings persistently, her bugged red eyes fixed unwaveringly on him.
âHelp!â Biggie cried out in desperation. âIâm being harangued by a monster!â
Giving up trying to outrun it, the big blue Troll crouched down and put his hands over his head, hoping it would perhaps go away. But, it didnât. The creature beat its wings against him and made angry hissing sounds.
âSomeone stop it!â he whimpered helplessly.
Luckily, as heâd wished, it was right at that moment that a shock of magenta hair whipped out and snatched the creature from the air. Relief passed through the Trolls, until they realized that it was not the Pop Queen who had grabbed the critter. In fact, it was nobody that the village knew.
But - standing there in the clearing donning black shorts with a large belt buckle, and a simple, black, pearl earring - the Troll seemed to know exactly what he was doing.
âGotcha! Okay, shhh, shh⊠Now calm down,... whoâs a good girl? Youâre a good girlâŠâ
The batty creature struggled in the newcomerâs grasp for a second, not appreciating being held steadfast, but quickly was soothed as the Troll rubbed its furry little belly and spoke hushedly. Pretty soon, its flapping had stopped entirely and purred, the vibration rumbling against his teal hand.
Once the others could sense no more imminent danger, they began to gather a little closer, whispering among themselves.
âWho is that?â Legsly asked, pointing at the new Troll. âAnd what is that thing heâs holding?â she added, referring to the critter.
âItâs creepy!â Cooper shuddered, shielding his eyes from the creature.
âItâs scary!â Satin and Chenille chimed at the same time.
âAnd⊠naAaAAasty,â Guy Diamond yelped in his techno-like voice.
âHold me, Daddy!â Tiny Diamond whimpered in his deep voice, letting his father clutch him close for protection.
Suddenly realizing that all the attention had gone to him, the newcomer shrunk under everybodyâs gaze, bashfully tucking his head down between his shoulders and allowing his magenta bangs to fall over his face, so that it shielded his left eye.
Branchâs eyes narrowed at him, though he could feel that his gaze was not as intense as he wouldâve liked for it to be. Reason being, there was something strangely familiar about this Troll. What it was, though, he couldnât pinpoint right away. That hair, that voice⊠he couldâve sworn heâd seen and heard it, if long ago in his memory.
As it turned out, it wasnât a much different situation for the new Troll, either. He looked at him curiously, mirroring Branch by slightly tilting his head and narrowing his eyes, as if there too was something he was trying to figure out. It was only when he shifted his gaze down to the leafy green vest Branch was wearing that things clicked. Recognition seemed to flash across his face in an instant, the magenta-haired Troll lifting his eyes to meet Branchâs and looking as though he were about to say something. But before he couldâŠ
ââTo Queen Poppyâ?â Poppy read aloud from a scroll that the creature had dropped on the ground. She was confused to see her name written on it, and continued to read. ââBarb, Queen of Rock, announces her One Nation of Trolls Under Rock World Tour. Bring your string to the biggest party in the world has ever seen.ââ Poppy beamed. âOh, donât worry everyone. Itâs an invitation!â
The Trolls chattered excitedly. A party? With games and presents and glitter galore? That sounded like fun!
âBut why does she need our string?â Cooper questioned.
âAnd what does âQueen of Rockâ mean? Who is she?â Poppy asked aloud.
âYou donât wanna know.â
Poppy whirled around to face the newcomer, his silence having her almost forget entirely that he was even there. âTrust me,â he said again, âyou donât.â
The Pop Queen was startled to hear such a thing. âBut⊠itâs a party!â she exclaimed.
âNot the kind you wanna go to,â the Troll replied without hesitation. âNot with what the Hard Rockers have plannedâŠâ
Poppy shook her head. âBut who are they?â
âNobody!â King Peppy shouted, hurrying into the crowd of Trolls, sidling up to his daughterâs side and tearing the invitation from her hand. He proceeded to crumble it in a frenzy, all while crying out hysterically. âNobody saw anything! Nothing to see here!â He then turned to the magenta-haired Troll and began to shove him away. âYoung man, go back to where you came from! Now, please!â
âWhoa, whoa, Dad!â Poppy called, touching her father on the shoulder. He yelped, jolting and looking at her wildly. Popy was baffled. Her Dad was kicking out a Troll? What in the world for? She took his hands in hers in and spoke soothingly to calm him. âDad, whatâs going on?â
King Peppy gazed deeply into her eyes for a moment, peering between her and the new Troll, and then sighed.
âOh, Poppy,â he moaned, âIâve long feared this day would come. I was hoping to protect you from this.â
Poppy raised an eyebrow. âProtect me?â she asked. âIâm not a little kid anymore, Dad. Iâm the queen now.â
âYouâre right,â King Peppy agreed, nodding slowly. âThe truth is⊠we are not alone in this worldâŠâ
Mr. Dinkles made a spooky sound to accompany King Peppyâs explanation. Biggie stuck a finger in his pet formâs round mouth.
âShhh!â Biggie said to his little friend.
âYou see, there are other kinds of Trolls,â King Peppy told everyone. The Trolls around him were silent for a moment, taking this in. Other Trolls? What did King Peppy mean?â
âWow, really?â Poppy said enthusiastically. âDad, thatâs great! The more Trolls, the merrier!â
The newcomer scoffed. âIf only it were that easy,â he mumbled.
King Peppy cut his eyes to him, frowning. âYoung man, this conversation does not involve you. Iâve asked you to leave once⊠donât make me have to call security!â He jerked a thumb over to where Smidge was standing, the little Troll cracking her knuckles in anticipation of a potential scuffle.
The Troll gulped at the sight, and quickly stammered an explanation. âN-no! Please, Iâm not here to cause trouble. I came here to help you guys.â
But when Peppy did not relax, and Poppy began to show signs of discomfort at the confrontation, Branch stepped in to enforce the matter.
âYou heard him,â he stated simply, but with a hardness to his voice that spoke more volumes alongside the clenched fists at his side.
âI know,â he replied. âBut I canât just leave you guys in danger, Branch.â
âWeâre more than capable of taking care of our - Wait, what?â Branch blinked, surprised to hear this stranger call him by name. How did he know who he was?
The Troll offered a gentle smile. âItâs been a while, bro.â
The blue Troll gasped, realizing exactly who this was and being unable to believe it. All the years he waited and waited, until he couldn't anymore, and now he was back? He could almost feel tears pooling in his eyes as a mix of conflicting emotions assaulted him.
Poppy saw the strong reaction coming from her friend, and cautiously spoke to the newcomer.
âIâm sorry... Who did you say you were, again?â
The newcomer let out a breath he was holding, tucked the bat creature under one arm and extended his other to Poppy to properly introduce himself.
âForgive me for not doing this sooner. My name is Floyd,â he said, âand Iâm Branchâs brother.â

With the manner in which the Trolls in the clearing had erupted into a cacophony of noise - a mix of questions about the Troll-turned-sibling, panic-stricken worries over the idea of the existence of other strange Trolls, and even outright screaming - it came as no surprise that Peppy had ordered for them to break into a smaller group, to allow for a little more privacy.
It was here in the beautiful secluded grotto in the company of just Floyd, Poppy, Branch, and the Snack Pack that King Peppy wove a tale unlike any other that had been heard. A story of six Tribes of Trolls, each uniquely defined by their special taste in music - Techno, Funk, Classical, Country, Rock, and Pop - and how harmony had been created as a result of it. The harmony, however, was not meant to last. Intolerance sprouted like weeds, leading to discord, leading to the ultimate separation of each tribe. But perhaps the most striking part of the tale was the revelation of their own string - the Pop string, a gorgeous pink in color and producing an equally gorgeous sound, housing the very lifeforce that made them them - the toe-tapping, finger-snapping, rump-shaking Trolls they were.
âOhh, I get it,â Poppy murmured, âQueen Barb wants to reunite the strings so that the Trolls Kingdom can be one big party again!â The Pop Queen grinned a little. She liked the sound of that!
But Floyd shook his head. âUm, no,â he disagreed gently. âBarb has no interest whatsoever in uniting the world. She wants to destroy it. And sheâs going to do it one tribe at a time until thereâs none left!â He picked up the invite from where it lay (a little wrinkled, but still legible) next to the ancient scroll that King Peppy had used to depict the tale. âThese invitations were just the first step. A deception. And anyone who doesnât give up their string is going to have it taken by force.â He looked at the bat critter in his hands and sighed. âI tried to stop the invite from even reaching you guys, but I guess I wasnât fast enough to keep up with Debbie hereâŠâ
Poppy was stunned. âB-but⊠why would another queen use her power for evil? Didnât anyone try to stop her?â
âThe Hard Rockers are all on board,â Floyd explained. âShe managed to convince everyone that this was the best thing to do for her people. They all believed her. Well, um⊠except for me. But then again, I was never a true Rock Troll from the startâŠâ
Poppy snapped her fingers. âThatâs riiiight⊠and thatâs something else Iâm not understandingâŠâ She turned on her friend. âBranch! How come you never told me you have a secret brother?!â
The blue Troll frowned. âWhatâs there to tell? I have no brothers.â
Floyd was confused. âBranch, what are you talking about? Just take a look at usâŠâ
It was true. Even by sight, there was a very distinct similarity between the two of them, from their teal skin, purple noses, round face shapes, and even slight downward curve of their ears.
But Branch crossed his arms defiantly. âI have no brothers,â he said again, emphasizing each syllable, âbecause the day you walked out on me, you lost the chance to ever call me that again.âÂ
âBranch, please, believe me, I was going to come back, itâs just - â
âJust what?â Branch cut in, scoffing. âYouâre a liar. You never followed through with your promise.â
Floyd fiddled with his fingers. âWell, um, I mean, Iâm here now, arenât I?â
âUh-huh⊠twenty years TOO LATE!â Branch turned to the others in the grotto. âWhy should we believe someone like this? For all we know, he could be a spy for these âHard Rockâ Trolls!â He searched his friendsâ faces. Silently taking it all in, Biggie, Smidge, Cooper, Guy Diamond, and Legsly were a mixture of uncertainty and concern, not sure what to make of it.
King Peppy spoke up for them. âBranch,â he said gently, âI certainly see where youâre coming from. But⊠are you willing to put our tribe in danger because of it?â He shook his head. âIâm sorry, but itâs a risk Iâm not willing to take.â He then waved to the Trolls. âHurry now! We must prepare before Barb arrives! Weâve got no time to lose!â
âDad, wait!â Poppy cried, trying to stop her him and her friends as they shuffled off. âGuys, come on! Just because theyâre different doesnât mean that the solution is fighting! Branch, help me out here, say something!â
Branch marched right by her. âWait for me!â he called out. But as he scurried by, he was grabbed by the arm.
âBranch, wait,â Floyd pleaded. Then he turned to Poppy. âCould you, uh⊠give us a minute?â he asked politely.
Branch wanted to protest, but he groaned, and did not put up a fight. âIâll meet you in a second, Poppy,â he said with a roll of his eyes.
âOh! Um, okayâŠâ She trudged off, sparing one last glance at them before heading off in the direction her father had gone. The two boys were left there in an awkward, tense silence.
Floyd broke it first, clearing his throat. âWow⊠youâve really grown into that vest of mine. Youâre⊠a man now.â
Branch kept his back turned to him as he answered tersely. âJust goes to show how long itâs been.â
Floyd sighed. âLook, Branch, I know that nothing I can say is a valid enough excuse for what happened. I guess I just got so caught up with my solo career once the Rock Trolls took me in. But I swear that there wasnât a day that went by that I didnât think about you.â He chuckled for a second. âRemember how we used to make up songs and dances? It was a lot of fun.â
It was, Branch recalled, almost wanting to smile, but he composed himself. âThatâs all in the past,â he said coldly, turning to look him right in the eye. âAnd besides, actions speak louder than words. And the fact is that you never came back.â
Branch felt a tug at his heart when Floyd winced, hurt by his words. But then again, they were words of truth.
âYouâre right,â Floyd said, âActions do speak louder than words. And here I am now, trying to save my little brother from something that I know for sure is going to harm him. Because I want him to be safe. It was a mistake to leave him the first time. And I donât want to lose him again.â
Branch felt himself loosening. He wanted to keep up the wall of ice he built around himself should any of his brothers try to come back into his life. But not even those walls were immune to the warmth of Floydâs kindness. âI really want to believe you, Floyd,â he whispered, âI just donât know if I canâŠâ
âThen let's just take things one step at a time, okay?â And when Branch nodded, Floyd took the opportunity to extend his arms out, allowing Branch to decide whether he wanted to make a move or not.
It didnât take long to come to that decision, though. Branch embraced Floyd in a replica of that very same night that he had left him. He squeezed tightly, wanting to confirm his physical presence, and afraid to let go should he have been a mirage this entire time.
âAwwwâŠâ
The pair broke apart, finding Poppy cooing at the scene. She grinned sheepishly upon realizing sheâd intruded on the private moment.
âOh! Iâm sorryâŠâ
âItâs all right, Poppy,â Branch assured. âWeâre just about done here.â
âOh, good,â she breathed in relief. âWell, I mean, because, I wanted to talk to you guys about Barb. Weâve gotta stop her!â
âCanât say I disagree with the endgoal here, but the trouble comes in the âhow,ââ Floyd pointed out.
âWell, we can think about it as we get everyone safely hidden away in the bunker,â Branch said, waving them to follow.
âBunker?â Floyd asked, coming up alongside his brother.
âOh, itâs the coolest thing ever!â Poppy gushed. âItâs underground, and itâs got all these tunnels and rooms, and trapdoors, and⊠and so much cool stuff!â
Floyd beamed. âWow, so you built the hideout, huh? Iâm proud of you, Branch.â
âHideout?â The Pop Queen echoed, curious.
There was a hint of a bashful blush in the blue Trollâs cheeks as he shrugged in reply.
âHeh, well, itâs not that big of a dealâŠâ
âOf course it is,â Floyd countered, bumping his elbow against his. âDid you even add the ten-story waterslide?â
Poppy gasped. âA waterslide in the bunker? That sounds amazing!â
But Branch shook his head. âNah.â
âBut then, how do you shower?â
Branch answered his brotherâs teasing question with a little smirk. âI bathe.â
