Reblogs of the original post were turned off, so here it is, and as we all know, folks under 30 cannot open drawers. It's just a fact. More than that, it's that most (Murican, cooks excepted) tumblrers under 30 haven't though to buy a cheese grater or potato masher because those tend to be things you buy when you really settle into a place. I still don't own a potato masher at 38 and in the past six months have realized that I probably should get one. The only reason I haven't is that my cabinets and drawers are already overflowing with things that tend to cause problems when opening. Tongs are my enemy there--I would store them in counter-top storage containers (ceramic vases repurposed to hold kitchen utensils), but there's no room there and no room for more containers. Ah, the joys of a galley kitchen in a 110 year old house.
For the record--if you want something like a cheese grater but smaller so it doesn't take up so much space, just use a zester. It only works for small grating tasks, so it's not great for grating things like potatoes and carrots, but that's what food processors are for. Don't have a food processor? Get thyself a Cuisinart (or whatever offbrand kind you'd like).
