ship/character ask meme: echo, murphy, and becho
how i feel about this character: I LOVE HER. i love how refreshingly competent she is - like, sheâs good at her job and sheâs unapologetic about it & itâs, largely, not written as anything more than that. her âantagonistâ arc is one of her simply being on the opposing side, rather than her being âevilâ and i like that about her.Â
any/all the people i ship romantically with this character: bellamy. i like the idea of echo/raven but i donât ship it bc both of them read tragically heterosexual to me. i joked about it a few times but i am kind of into the idea of murphy and echo having tragic, grief-filled sex where theyâre both thinking about bellamy lmao - and echo x murphamy is a vibe.
my favourite non-romantic relationship for this character: loved her bitchy siblings relationship with roan and the idea of the kardashian-esque drama of the azgeda royal family (echo, roan, and ontari as the cunty heirs to niaâs kingdom). i really loved her relationship with spacekru and wish we got more of it. monty and murphy especially! i feel like her and octavia couldâve had a much more compelling relationship than we got to see in canon.
my unpopular opinion about this character: i really, truly do not care about book 2â˛s retroactively giving her a background. it wasnât really needed, it didnât really add anything, and it was an incredibly bland, predictable âi was orphaned and forced by an evil authority figure to do bad and iâve lived in shame and trauma over it ever sinceâ which just felt like it was the more boring direction to take her character, creatively. i donât care about the show telling us to think azgeda are bad, or that echo believes that. her book 2 revelations stripped echo of all her nuance and flavour, and all of her agency - within a plot that was allegedly about her refinding her agency!
one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: she got to kill clarke. i also like the idea of motherhood for her - whilst iâm not into family/motherhood arcs at all i do think that, ultimately, echo always wanted a sense of home and belonging, and her and bellamy were that committed that it just felt natural for her. plus the whole vibe of âhope of future generationsâ schtick the show SHOULD have ended on.
favourite friendship for this character: probably monty? space siblings who could bond over the trauma of the mountain and the cages, over being PHENOMENALLY cunty, over being infinitely more competent than everyone else, over a longing for peace and stability and home, over algae...
my crossover ship:Â i donât really do crossover ships.
how i feel about this character: horrible, feral, dirty little heathcliff with dirt and blood under his nails; i adore him so very much.Â
any/all the people i ship romantically with this character: into this weird maybe romantic, maybe platonic, maybe familial schtick with finn. love tacking raven onto that - esp. bc it upsets raven/braven stans and that thrills me. bellamy. iâm also into jontari belatedly bc the more i think abt the potential the more i fall in love with the concept, try and fight me abt that again, i dare you.
my favourite non-romantic relationship for this character: i really liked his relationship with jaha and iâm sad thereâs no interesting meta or w/e abt it. love the idea of wellsâ relationship with murphy and what it could have been. i miss the vibe of bellamyâs militia. spacekru was grand - i wish we got more scenes with him and echo together.
my unpopular opinion about this character: murphyâs a nasty little cunt, frankly, and i wish people would stop pretending otherwise. fandom talk about him like heâs faultless and iâve no interest in declawing him. he is a very loving individual, thatâs true, but thatâs not the same thing as being nice. i feel like this perception of him came from the writing softening him a lot from s3 onwards, and itâs why i really do not like emori/him with emori. let! murphy! piss! on! people! again!
one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:Â he pissed on clarke. i wish his arc of being this angry, bitter scrap of malice and desperation had had a better culmination. i loved his arc with ontari up until the writing just... dropped it. and i wish that that had gone somewhere, instead. also i wish the writing had gone with fanon tbh and written him as canonically asexual bc iâm tired of people in my gc passive-aggressively :/-ing me abt my insistence on still interpreting him as ace bc that was what everything thought for a hot minute, and i am ace and i want to.
favourite friendship for this character: finn. but also bellamy - although honestly is bellamy even his friend?Â
my crossover ship:Â rifp.
when i started shipping them: the minute they had their first scene together; i assumed (correctly) that it was setting up a love interest. echo hissing âsky person?â and spitting on him? sold it for me. i was really into it pretty much immediately.
my thoughts:Â they just make sense. they make so much sense. they complete each other so neatly, whilst complimenting each other as characters enough to supply good content narratively. i wish we got more of them together, but whatâs nice is that we donât need to see every step of their relationship bc itâs very natural and intuitive. we didnât need a spacekru flashback sequence of their relationshipâs build-up - the reveal that they had gotten together was already a foregone conclusion. we knew early in s4 that it was going to happen. and it is really refreshing to not have to deal with high stakes and ship drama. they just work.
what makes me happy about them: i love the vibe of âtwo belligerents on opposing sides of a conflict much bigger than either of themâ. theyâre not simply âenemies to loversâ - they never truly hated each other as enemies. tinder box spells it out pretty nicely. it creates some nice nuance there, and interesting parallels between them.Â
what makes me sad about them:Â the writing pulls a u-turn on their characterisations in book 2 due to the need to upend everything to restore clarkeâs relevance to the plot, as well as bobâs situation, and it results in book two becho not really feeling like becho, because neither of the characters really feel like each other.Â
things done in fanfic that annoys me: echo being treated like some kind of villainous âother womanâ or the clingy, possessive girlfriend that bellamy ultimately leaves for clarke. itâs misogynistic, out of character and generally badly written. you can write bellarke fics that start with becho, just often it feels incredibly transparently spiteful and misogynistic. alternatively, becho fic that writes echo as being overly competent whilst bellamy is useless is also boring to me. bellamyâs very intelligent & the trope of âcompetent wife looking after her stupid husbandâ is boring.
things i look for in fanfic:Â i donât really read fic, to be fair, but i love fics that pad out the world they inhabit together - going undercover in mount weather; azgeda-skaikruâs conflict and later alliance; surviving on the ring... (and i do love a lot of moral ambiguity and blood).
my wishlist: my s3 au. one day iâll write up the breakdown for it.
who iâd be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:Â what does losing feel like? iâll never know. although, again, i donât really have any other ships for echo so iâm fine with her ending the show alone, with the implication she could move on and get with someone else down the line if she so wanted to. for bellamy, maybe murphy?
my happily ever after for them:Â i mentioned motherhood earlier - and yeah, them having a daughter called nike has always been something iâve played around with from them (since 2015!) but first and foremost, let them find a place in the sun, on arable soil, with their family.
