STICK AROUND AND ENJOY THE RIDE.
By Fermina Ponce
Every organization has a growing process and in within, there is a lot of learning, stretching and mistakes, while adjusting and tuning the actions to fulfill a mission. What I find fascinating is the behavior of the leaders.
In all my years of experience in the corporate world and after interacting with thousands of Sales Managers, R&D people, support functions (HR, logistics, finances, communications and marketing) among others, I have found two main groups: Those who are below the line and those who are above the line. Some people call this the Accountability Model, as Sandy Asch refers to it in her offering #ExcellenceAtWork, others call it the #PerformanceModel, either or, the root and approach is the same. I like the #AccountabilityModel.
When below the line, leaders opt to have a disengaged and victim behavior (things are happening to them or things are the responsibility of someone else). When above the line, leaders opt to stick around, find solutions and perform. They see themselves creating possibility and performing under high levels of accountability.
I am a strong believer in sticking around when things are gray and if you want to leave, do it in your best moment and when the organization is set up to continue succeeding. Make sure you have given your all.
Those of you who have heard me speak know that I refer a lot to movies. I believe, those script writers have some great pearls of knowledge or choose to highlight lines from books that are worth keeping in front of you. One of my favorite quotes from the book Seabiscuit by #LauraHillenbrand, also in the movie is: “You know, you don’t throw a whole life away just ‘cause he’s banged up a little.”
What kind of a leader are you?
Do you stick around and create possibilities?
Do you find new pathways?
Do you run and/or participate in your group and/organization as it was yours?
Do you give the credit of success to your team?
Do you take full responsibility on what must need to be improved?
Do you recognize the mistakes, embrace them and use them to create success?
I know you are that kind of a leader. Stick around and enjoy the ride!
