The demon tilted his head to the side with an innocent smile, as if he wasn’t just now caught lurking outside the Trancy manor in the middle of the night. Claude’s deadpan, monotone, almost annoyed tone made it hard to keep that smile from turning into a grin.
“Why, am I not allowed to wander outside?”
Ciel had been wanting him to investigate the manor and see if anything odd was taking place, and he figured in the middle of the night would be the easiest time, where both of their masters were asleep and they didn’t have to worry about them wandering off and getting in trouble of their own.

Nothing in his life had been a fairy tale. To expect anything to be one would have been foolish — even with Claude there making him feel like he’d gotten past the bad luck that littered his world.
“No,” the blond breathed, blue eyes opened wide as shock of his realization settled into his bones. It might not have been a happily ever after ending in Alois’ mind, but he had let himself believe that there could have been SOMETHING for the two of them. It wasn’t everyday he found someone worth giving his heart to, after all.
One hand raised to swat the older man away from him. “Of course not, don’t be so daft. Do I look like a bloody CHILD to you?” The younger male shook his head once - albeit violently - and wiped at forming tears with the back of his sleeve. So much for the fantasy. “I should have known this wouldn’t ever be anything serious…”
Part of him knew it was for the best, of course. There were jobs on the line; a potential black smudge to be made on his professor’s name - should anyone find out they’d been fooling around. “You weren’t that good anyway.”
