hi prosecutor anon!! ACTUALLY!!! I dropped some of that spicy farewell, my turnabout info during the confrontation comic with shelly de killer, but let me expound a bit more <3 (plus some spicy kingarde deets)
I dont know about game dialogue, but since the anime makes it a lot shorter there's a scene where matt says:
"im good. my agent already hired some big-shot lawyer to take the case."
im gonna assume they were bluffing or something BUT YOU KNOW WHAT ITS FREE REAL ESTATE SO IM GOING TO SAY [POINTS] OBJECTION, THAT BIG-SHOT LAWYER WAS JOSEPH KING!!!!
Joseph may not be well known in the city where the ace attorney trilogy takes place in, but I did write in his backstory for him to be much more popular in a neighbouring city! so anyway,
king and engarde were honestly a pretty closeted "couple" if you could call it that, considering matt was still a really popular actor and couldn't commit to an open relationship?? originally they had just a casual fling type relationship but it kinda evolved cos they were open about their two sides (work side and real side) to each other.
both were rich kids forced to put up a facade to look good, and both indulged in letting loose their own selves to the other without fear of being judged!!
now, they actually met waaaaaay before farewell, my turnabout so im sure Joseph wasn't part of engarde's plan or anything but still, matt then was thinking "oh shit im in this mess why dont I use my lover to protect me? im sure he'll understand <3 he'll protect me and prove me innocent so that we'll stay together" but shelly prevented that from happening (cos he has “values”) by kidnapping maya and forcing phoenix to do the job
about matthew engarde being guilty for his crimes. I mean, other than the fact that he was actually a fan of the nickel samurai and knew matt personally, im sure joseph was heartbroken. he didnt think matt was someone so sick as to actually hire an assassin to kill his rival, and terrible enough to drive a woman to suicide like. yikes dude, at least he avoided a major red flag and now he’s in jail but he had to take a few days off to think about it
what’s interesting though, is that even though matt engarde’s case totally ruined a lot of things for him, he still cant shake it off?? like, he still wears his nickel samurai shirt and keeps all the merchandise, aND HONESTLY?? IT WAS A NICKEL SAMURAI MOVIE THAT JOSEPH WENT TO DURING THIS CINEMATIC TURNABOUT!!!!!
so even if the nickel samurai seems to have waned in popularity, joseph still cant shake off how much he enjoyed the show as a fan and matt’s company as an ex-lover </3
