kimmsauce answered your ask: Hey what's your opinion on Thor: For Asgard. As...
Ok. Thank you
@kimmsauce I’m just gonna take this out separately rather than reblogging the whole mess again:
I usually agree with you on a lot of things, and I’m really not trying to be an asshole here, but “We’re saying that Americans are apparently more likely to be egocentrical enough to assume people from elsewhere will care about their local area. “ just really….. rubbed me the wrong way. Why ask someone where they are from if you don’t care about the answer?
We get that you’re not going to understand the local distinctions. Hell, the only way most Americans know Delaware is the joke from Wayne’s World. But we love explaining them because they’re an important of our identity, and for a lot of us who interact online, because the US is often painted as some sort of monolith completely void of culture. I love hearing about local differences from other people, be they from the US or from elsewhere, because they’re interesting.
I just don’t understand the hostility towards someone honestly answering the question.
To be perfectly clear: There’s no hostility towards the way any individual answers the question.
Generally there’s mild amusement at the trend of cultural difference in how many Americans respond to the question; at most there’s frustration at the discrepancy between the way many Americans want others to know about the specifics of their local identities, and the way many Americans know so little about what goes on internally in other countries. (See the OP; that’s the exact contrast they were highlighting.)
The hostility in this thread is towards the way people have responded to that cultural difference being pointed out. Specifically, it’s towards the people insisting that the cultural difference arises because Americans care about local identities in a way that non-Americans don’t understand, due to the USA’s purported exceptional internal diversity.
The thing is, that argument in itself is also a symptom of the fact that so many Americans know so little about the internal workings of other countries. I mean... the fact that multiple people here have earnestly argued that America is as culturally diverse as the entirety of Europe or Africa demonstrates a pretty mind-boggling egocentricity (or at the very least cultural ignorance).
So yeah. Most of the frustration in this thread comes from the fact that the response to someone pointing out possible cultural ignorance/egocentricity is to obliviously, even aggressively double down on that same cultural ignorance/egocentricity.

How the fuck is Biggs Darklighter an obscure Star Wars character?
ngl I was wondering the same thing but then remembered most people didn’t grow up obsessively reading every bit of Star Wars EU they could get their hands on

The nosepick always gets me. I usually pick your blog to send links on funny posts to His Lordship because I know ol’ hemmy’s gonna pop up in there, finger firmly planted in place.
