killianofneverland asked: âBellarke + "I went swimming at the lake today but I fell off my paddle board and thank u for saving me I thought I was gonna get stuck underneath it"
A/N: Full disclosure - I have never been paddle boarding and likely would be terrible at it, so my knowledge of how itâs actually done comes totally from Wikipedia. ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
PS - It took me so long to write this and Iâm sorry you had to wait so long! This fic features a flustered Bellamy and lots of sexual tension. Ahem.
Well, this is it. This is how I die, I guess, Bellamy thinks to himself, as he struggles to untangle himself from the cord to his paddleboard. His ankle is all twisted around the cord, and no matter what he does, he canât get it off.
Heâs going to die like this, trapped underneath his own stupid paddleboard in the middle of this stupid lake that his sister dragged him to (against his will, he might add), and this is it. The end.
Suddenly, he feels the pressure around his ankle lessen, and as soon as heâs able, he kicks to the surface, gasping for air when his head breaches.
ââ idiotâŚâ a voice is saying from above him, but heâs not listening, still trying to catch his breath after almost drowning. He feels himself being pulled back to his board and he holds on, wiping the excess water from his eyes.
When he opens his eyes finally, he sees a blonde girl treading water next to him, glaring at him.
âAre you okay?â She asks, sounding impatient.
âIâm⌠Iâm, yeah. Iâm fine. Did youââ
âI got the cord off your ankle, yeah,â she says, but sheâs still glaring, âDo you know how dumb it is to go paddleboarding without anyone with you?â
âIâmââ
âEspecially when itâs your first time!â She continues, ignoring him, and he feels embarrassment as well as a little anger well up inside of him.
âHow do you know that was my first time?â
He thinks if she could put her hands on her hips while treading water, she would have. âItâs a rental board,â she says flatly, âSo either you donât own one because youâve never done it before, or youâre just really bad at paddle boarding.â
Bellamy glares right back at her, âIâve done it before.â He clears his throat, trying to get the water out, âOnce or twice,â he clarifies, mumbling.
âYouâre lucky that I was on duty today,â she tells him and he takes in her outfit, and it all starts to make sense. The little lakeside resort where he was staying had a lifeguard, and she was tiny and blonde and saved his life and she was still glaring at him.
He scratches the back of his neck with his free hand, âI guess I owe you a thank-you.â
âItâs my job.â
âStill. Thanks.â He says, looking away from her.Â
She just looks at him for a minute, her head tilted as she takes him in, and he fights the urge to squirm under her gaze. âYou should get out of the water for a little bit. You probably swallowed some and got some up your nose, and it can make you feel sick.â
âIâm fine--â he starts to protest, but she just rolls her eyes.
âWho are you trying to impress?â She asks, smirking. âThereâs no one out here.â
Sheâs right, he realizes, when he looks around him to see that thereâs really no one else in the lake, save for a few younger kids near the shore tossing a ball back and forth.
âI wasnât trying to impress anyone,â he scoffs.Â
âThen you should get out of the water. Probably for an hour,â she advises, and he tries to tear his eyes away from the birthmark above her lips.Â
âDonât you have some lifeguarding to do?â He snaps, embarrassed that she had to rescue him in the first place and even more embarrassed that she was standing there looking at him like she knows something he doesnât.
âIâm guarding your life,â she says, smiling, and he squirms a little more. âWell, whatever. Suit yourself...â she trails off expectantly.
âBellamy,â he provides.
âBellamy. Suit yourself,â she says, smirking at him again, and before he can say anything else sheâs swimming away, her strides long and graceful. He tries not to watch her as she goes, and stops himself from staring at her by thinking that if he didnât die from drowning by paddleboard, heâs pretty sure she could drown him and make it look like an accident.
.
.
Later that night, Bellamy heads to the small general store at the resort to pick up some firewood and some matches. He and Octavia are planning to cook over the fire, and apparently heâs Oâs errand boy this evening, despite his protests.
âI almost drowned, O.â
âYou didnât drown, you big baby. Youâre fine. Fine enough to walk five minutes to get some supplies,â she says, glaring at him.
So, here he is, wandering in the small store, trying and failing not to notice the blonde girl working at the counter.Â
âAre you following me?â She asks when the only other customer in the store walks out the door, leaving Bellamy and her alone. âThis is all very suspicious.â
Bellamy narrows his eyes at her before approaching the counter. âWhere do you keep the matches?â
âAisle ten,â she says dryly, and he canât fight the quick upturn of his lips. The store is barely big enough for two aisles, let alone ten.
âHow did you get so lucky to lifeguard and work here?â He wonders out loud.
âThis is what happens when your parents own a resort and bully you into coming back every summer. I get to do all the thankless jobs!â She tells him brightly, clearly being sarcastic. âThe matches are over there by the lighter fluid,â she says after a beat.
âThanks,â he murmurs, walking towards the spot she pointed out. He glances back at her when he finds the matches, only to find her already looking at him, though she glances away quickly when he meets her eyes.
âClarke,â she says, and he looks at her in surprise. âIâm Clarke.â
Theyâre both quiet for a few more minutes until he finds all the supplies heâs looking for and brings them up to the counter to pay for them. Clarke begins to ring him up, and his eyes linger on her mouth a little too long when she starts asking him about his trip.
âHowâs the camping going?â
He lifts a shoulder in a shrug, âItâs fine. Iâm here with my sister. Sheâs trying to be all outdoorsy to impress this guy she likes.â He scowls, and Clarke laughs. âItâs fun though, we donât get to spend a lot of time together now that sheâs in college.â
Clarke meets his eyes and smiles softly, âYou must care about her a lot. Thatâs nice,â she says softly, and starts bagging up his items. âYouâre a nice guy, Bellamy Blake.â
His brow furrows, âHow did you--â
âI may have looked up your registration in our files,â she mumbles, cheeks bright red. âDonât look at me,â she says, glaring.
The smile that stretches across his face is bright. âWhoâs suspicious now?â He teases, and when she laughs with him and his heart flips over in his chest at the sound, he knows heâs in serious trouble.
.
.
Bellamy goes for a walk a couple nights later, and itâs absolutely not because he hopes that heâll run into Clarke as she sun sets. Absolutely not.
Sheâs just a girl, a pretty girl, but he knows thereâs nothing that could ever come of it -- heâs only here for one more day, and she seems way out of his league. Plus, heâs pretty sure she thinks heâs an idiot.
To be fair, he hasnât handled himself well any of the times heâs talked to her. He doesnât know what his problem is, and heâs pretty sure he doesnât want to dwell on it too much. He keeps seeing her all around the resort, and practically trips over his own feet every single time. He feels like a teenager, and even Octavia has noticed, teasing him for hours on end about his crush on Clarke.
âI talked to Clarke, and she told me she goes to school at VCU. Thatâs only a half hour from home, Bell!â
âGirls like her donât date guys like me. Itâs fine.â
âYouâre being stupid,â Octavia chastises, and Bellamy frowns at her.
On his walk, he ends up by the lake, admiring the reflection of the sunset. Thereâs only a few people down there, one or two having a small bonfire in the sand, and he takes a deep breath of the crisp night air.Â
âThis is bordering on stalking, you know,â a now familiar voice speaks up, and when he turns to see her, heâs already smiling, not able to hold it back anymore.
âIâm starting to think youâre the one stalking me,â he says, and he doesnât recognize the low, raspy pitch to his voice, but he swears he sees her eyes darken, and he thinks thereâs a good chance heâs going to spontaneously combust.
âWhen are you leaving?â She asks, and she drifts a little closer, their arms brushing. He shivers.
âTomorrow. Probably in the afternoon.â
âYou should come to the store in the morning and get some breakfast with me,â she says nonchalantly.
âWhy does that sound more like a demand than a request?â He teases, his hand almost twitching as he fights off the urge to brush a stray tendril of her hair back behind her ear.Â
She shrugs, âUp to you, Bellamy Blake,â she says, and something about the way she says his name makes him shudder.
âIâll see you in the morning,â he tells her, and his eyes close involuntarily when she smiles and leans forward, brushing her lips against the corner of his mouth. Not quite a kiss, no, but enough to make him want to grab her and pull her closer. She smells like campfire smoke and sunshine.
.
.
He meets her for breakfast, but they spend more time talking then they do eating, and when he and Octavia leave, itâs with Clarkeâs number programmed in his phone, and the sight of her smiling face as she laughs at something he said when she forced him to take a selfie with her as his lockscreen.Â
âSo you donât forget about me,â she said when she stole his phone.
Pretty sure thatâs not possible, he thought, but he didnât say it out loud at the time.
When he and Octavia get home later that night, he gets a text from Clarke informing him that when she gets back to school in the fall, heâs taking her out to dinner.Â

Hey! I just started school today and I already am loving it! Half way into the hour I was supposed to be there, while I was in line for school photos, my yearbook teacher (and basically my bff) came up to me and asked me to meet with him and another two girls at lunch. Apparently we're the most trustworthy and that absolutely THRILLS me. Don't even care if I'm a "teachers pet". How about you?
Wow that sounds great! Mine was pretty good, it just felt really long lol. For once I didnât go to any of the wrong classes which happens every year so that was nice!
