Attack of the super monster.... wow.. just wow. With ferocious furiosity they say.. at least thats what the narrator said at once point as he kept you up with the plot. Dinosaurs that have been living in a high pressure chamber beneath the earth have gained super powers and now are on a rampage to destroy earth. The dinos are back and bigger and stronger and more eye laser shooting then ever. Also their wizard T rex leader Tyranasaur (know as Satan Rex in Japan) can control earths lower life forms and make them into monsters as well. Luckily super hero team is formed to stopped them with there super ships on a path to fight the super magical dinosaurs and send them back to the palo age. This super hero has a lot of tricks to save the day.
Mixing kaiju rubber suited monster scenes with anime hero scenes making them feel like two worlds. Seriously wild and weird bouncing between and mixing live action and animated, feeling like clips of Ultraman , Thunderbirds mixed with clips of Battle for the Planets and Voltron. Even mixes in a repetitive claymation scene of the dinosaur world. The two main heros can even cross into each other and become one when they power up, probably a metaphor for the entire media style of this movie.
How is this a thing?
The story behind it is “Izenborg” which was a 30 episode tv series in Japan made in partnership with Toho that was fully aware that it was making Ultraman ripoff footage and obvious Battle for the Planet rip off scenes and just mixing them together. All original footage if not original in design. This aired in 1979 but in 1982 an American vhs release of several edited together episodes dubbed into english by some very recognisable American voice actors tried to pass it off as a movie called Attack of the Supermonsters. The bland covers made it look like a land of the lost movie but wow is it a wilder superhero adventure in every way. By wild dubbing they somehow super forced into one plot that comes out like rabid battle ready monster madness.
Keeping that classic tokusatsu 70s era music to keep it funky.
All I need to say is an evil magical T rex fights an animated G force (nicknamed D force)who have cool ships that don't join into a giant robot, but they join together and turn into a live action Ultraman called Gemini.
I love this stuff but I am feeling dizzy from how much media just got shot at me with no mercy what so ever. Wow.
Check this cover for the Japanese tv series.. you still wont fully know what your getting yourself into.
EEK!
FREEZE! IT'S KILLER BATS!
I dunno if you heard, but there's a cool new project from Kevin Panetta (writer), Brooke Allen (penciller), Me (inks), Paulina Ganucheau (colors), and Aubrey Aiese (Letterer) that's going to be coming to you in the form of murder, mayhem and BATS. This is the first time that I finally had some time to ink Brooke's amazing pencils and I can't wait to see what else comes next!
Stay tuned...
