The Rain
The rain came and brought the monsters with it.Ā
We didnāt know.Ā
From all the surveying we had done it looked like where we landed was a good place to set up our exploratory camp. We knew that the planet had two extreme seasonal variations, a dry season and a wet season. It was near the middle of the dry season when we landed and we watched the water dry up as we built our camp. We built it on the highest land we could so when the water came back we would still be on dry land. We thought we were being quite clever.Ā
We didnāt know what was coming with the rain.Ā
Ā Two months after the command ship left us the storms started in the distance. Soon the dry bottom land began to fill with water. Plants started to sprout from the dry ground bringing with them insect like creatures. There were flies that bit and liked to swarm in the evenings. We thought that would be the worst thing we had to deal with.
We didnāt know.Ā
Rats: Night of TerrorĀ (1984)
A movie in the criminally-underserved microgenre of post-apocalyptic horror. A gang of leather-clad motorcycle-riding scavengers find a facility full of food and water... and killer rats! Neither the setting nor the concept is particularly unique, but putting them together makes for something more fun than its component parts. The story and effects aren't always the best, but that's just part of the fun. However, you do get the impression that some animals were definitely harmed in the making of this film.

So, no one around here would care, so let me share with you, internet pals: confession - I kind of love killer animals. I'm too much of a scaredy cat to watch horror, but trashy pulp books like this? Love them. Root for the animals. This isn't a guilty pleasure - because I don't believe in feeling guilt over the things I love, but it is a funny one that no one really knows about me. Do you have any favorite pulp books?
Jaws (by Shane Myers)
āWell sometimes, dead is better. The person you put up there ain't the person that comes back. It might look like that person, but it ain't that person, because whatever lives on the ground beyond the Pet Sematary ain't human at all.ā Jud Crandall, Pet Sematary, April 21st, 1989
