Universities do tell future teachers to at the very least TRY and be consciously aware of the biases you have internalized when you're in the classroom... and people STILL do this shit. I'm getting my Bachelor's in teaching and had a whole lecture on this EXACT issue... but it was only one lecture, there needs to be a whole class addressing it.
Yeah especially since compassion typically gets better results. An us-versus-them environment is stressful for everyone.
Especially in my case: a lot of lower-income families moved into the area as I grew up, and they were already made to feel unwelcome and not worth investing effort into. It’s appalling how teachers in our ‘gifted’ program spoke about the remaining student body's behavior & futures. That’s how I slipped into my agonizing ‘don’t be like The Others’ phase lol.
More training is desperately needed!
