RP. #nubiancuban Eligio SardiƱas Montalvo, known as #Kidchocolate, was Cubaās first world champion in boxing. That junior lightweight belt, won way back in 1931, made him a national hero on an island that craved the sweet science. Eligio Sardinias aka Kid Chocolate, one of boxingās brightest stars of the 1930's, died #OnThisDay in Havana in 1988. He was 78 years old. Chocolate was the first Cuban to win a world title and he boxed eight world champions in all. The āKid' loved to fight and he loved a party. A crowd favourite with quick feet and fast hands. He was talented and clever, and he could punch. Consequently, he became a huge attraction in New York in the ā20s and ā30s. He was often criticised for his poor training habits but always came to fight when it mattered. Chocolate fought in an era when some of the worldās top fighters resided between 126 and 135 pounds ā and he fought them all. He beat great fighters like Fidel La Barba, Al Singer and Bushy Graham, but his first defeat, after 53 consecutive victories, was to Jack āKidā Berg on a split decision. After failing to dethrone featherweight champion Battling Battalino, Chocolate won the super-feather title with a seventh-round stoppage against Benny Bass in 1931. That same year he failed to win the lightweight title against the great Tony Canzoneri. In 1932 Chocolate again lost to Berg but claimed the featherweight crown, as recognised by the NY Boxing Commission, when he stopped Lew Feldman at The Garden. Chocolate defended his title twice against LaBarba and Britainās āSeamanā Tommy Watson before relinquishing it because of weight problems. The Kid's erratic lifestyle was catching up with him and by 1933 his career had started to decline. Canzoneri knocked him out in two rounds. Canzoneri wrote: āI nailed him hard with a right to the chin. He went sliding to the canvas, the side of his face landing first. When he lifted his head I could see that the skin was scraped clear off his cheek and then his face fell back into a pool of blood. He didnāt get up.ā Worse was to come. Chocolate lost his super-featherweight title when Frankie Klick scored a technical knockout over him in seven rounds. He continued to fight on until he eventually retired in 1938. He ran a gym after he retired to Cuba and passed away in 1988. There is a boxing gym in Havana named after him. #boxing #BoxingNews #BoxingHistory #KidChocolate (at Kid Chocolate Sport Hall, Havana)
I loved these kids. They were ditching school to smoke cigarettes and watch football one afternoon at the Kid Chocolate Boxing hall. They showed me the rafters, how to sneak into the venue so you wouldn't have to pay the .25'ish cent cover and where they'd go to try to discretely hook up with their lady friends. Timeless. Kid Chocolate was named after Eligio SardiƱas, one of Cubaās finest boxers who gained world wide notoriety in and out of the ring. #cubanbonbon #kidchocolate (at Havana, Cuba)
