Lingua Ignota: “Above Us Only Sky” (2020)
Oh, how nice that some of your favorite personalities decided to band together for a viral video and sing John Lennon’s “Imagine” (’71) during a time of crippling isolation and a real fear for our health. So wonderful that these four-star celebrities come together in all smiles for a sense of false hope and simply “imagine” the coronavirus would magically go away. Have a laugh, share a laugh. All is good in the world. Well, Lingua Ignota wants absolutely none of your fucking shit. Most of Hollywood’s well-to-do stay home and weather the chaos by sitting on piles of money and accumulating royalties. The everyday Jane and Joe American race to beat the clock for unemployment benefits, medical tests, and avoid eviction. Kristin Hayter / Lingua Ignota lost her current touring life and sits broke after spending her savings on dental work. Now she currently needs funds to fix a herniated disc. Like most musicians, Hayter took it to Bandcamp and turned both Lennon’s optimistic single and their tone-deaf publicity stunt on their heads.
“Above Us Only Sky”, an orphaned upload, takes after the fourth line of Lennon’s song. You’ll hear Hayter open things up with the first two (”imagine there's no heaven / it's easy if you try”) in a muffled manner akin to Kid606′s distorted vocal loop on “This Is Not My Statement”. The similarities stop there and it’s enough to make it a cover. By then, all bets are off and her version explodes in a huge head-on wall of white noise destruction that breaks apart the continents and shreds the surface clean. For the final minute, “Above Us Only Sky” screams the alarm, dead on arrival and put to death. For $1.00, you’ll buy the orphan and support Hayter’s crucial surgery. Now ask yourself: what have some of those happy celebrities in question done in terms of donations, awareness, or relief? Not as much as we’ve done for one of our own.
“TO LIFT SPIRITS AND INSPIRE HOPE” Hayter says as she throws it in all of their faces.
