Certain raptors have large apteria (bare skin between) feather tracts. Sometimes they can be hard to cover by just arranging feathers so often I use stitches to pull the sections of feathers together.

Here’s the Merlin where the leg meets the body before and after cinching.

Nose: Falcons are high speed predators. Peregrine Falcons can reach speeds of over 200 mph, and while Merlins aren’t that fast but they’re still high speed predators often hunting columbiformes (pigeons and doves, hence the scientific name) like Mourning Doves which are really strong, agile, and fast too.

Moving this quickly can present a problem for breathing… but falcons have a structure in their nose called a baffle or nasal tubercle (the yellow spot in the merlin’s nostril above) which reduces pressure fluctuations in the air and the speed at which it enters the nose, which aids respiration (makes it easier to breathe while moving really fast). (Kesel et al., 2019)
