Khamis Mosque

Khamis Mosque - Bahrain - This is the oldest mosque in Bahrain as well as one of the oldest in the world.  It is believed by historians and archaeologists that the foundation was laid sometime in the late 7th century.  It had been rebuilt many times, most notably in the 14th and 15th centuries when the minarets were added.  Regarding the minarets, they are open to the public to climb to the top, which I find amazing since the space is incredibly tight and there isn’t any lighting inside to see where you are going. I love exploring these sights in the Middle East, just like the forts in Bahrain, there isn’t anything stopping you from touching and exploring the entire site.  If this were the United States, everything would be overly organized and sanitized, one just would not be able to fully experience and explore an ancient archaeological site by one’s self.
