Isavel held the thing between two fingers, the way you'd hold a dead insect you were trying to identify. It was rectangular. Matte black. About the length of her forearm, flat-sided, with a single tooth protruding from the top edge at a right angle. It looked less like a key and more like a mistake someone had made while trying to describe a key from memory.
"It's ugly," Isavel said.
"It works," said Rei.
Isavel turned it over. No keychain. No ornamentation. The surfaces were featureless except for a faint seam running along one edge, as though two pieces of something had been pressed together and not quite fused. It didn't hum the way it was supposed to hum. It didn't pull. It sat in her hand like an object - just an object, with weight and temperature and nothing else.
"Tell me what I'm holding."
Rei pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders. She'd been talking for three hours and her throat was dry and Isavel had not offered water, because these kinds of... people... sometimes forgot that bodies needed things.
"Okay," Rei said. "So. Starting from first principles."
"Please."
"A Keyblade is generated from the wielder's heart. That's the standard model. Heart expresses itself as weapon, weapon inherits the properties of the heart, the two are linked, the Keyblade is an extension of identity. Yes?"
"That is the understood mechanism."
"Right. And the Keyblade does things that nothing else can do - seal, unseal, free hearts from Heartless - because it's operating at the substrate level. It's not just a weapon. It's a substrate interface. It interacts with the medium reality is made of, not just the objects sitting on top of that medium."
Isavel inclined her head. She did not have expressions, exactly, but she had inclinations. This one meant continue.
"Now. Why can't you just build one? Why can't you forge a sword, enchant it really hard, and have it do what a Keyblade does? The standard answer is that a Keyblade has to come from a heart, and you can't fake a heart. The weapon needs to be authentic. It needs to be a genuine expression of genuine identity, or the substrate doesn't recognize it as an interface. It's like--" Rei paused. "You wouldn't understand the analogy."
"Try me."
"It's like a biometric lock. A fingerprint scanner. The substrate checks whether the thing trying to interface with it is really an expression of a real heart, and if it's not, it rejects it. You can't fake a fingerprint."
"I don't know what a fingerprint scanner is."
"It doesn't matter. The point is: authentication. The substrate authenticates the Keyblade by checking it against the heart that generated it, and if the check fails, the object is just an object. A sword that looks like a key. That's why nobody's ever manufactured one. You can build the shape. You can't build the authentication."
Isavel looked at the ugly rectangular thing in her hand. "And yet."
"And yet." Rei allowed herself a small, somewhat manic smile. "Because the authentication model is wrong. Or rather - it's incomplete. It describes what happens with real Keyblades accurately. But it assumes that substrate-level interface requires authentication, and that assumption is falsifiable."
She reached into the pocket of her coat and produced a piece of paper - actual paper, which she'd made herself from local materials through a process that had taken two weeks and annoyed everyone, because there was perfectly good parchment available at a store ran by floating dogs with pom-pom antennae - and unfolded it. On it she'd drawn a diagram. Isavel looked at the diagram the way she'd looked at the prototype: with clinical detachment and absolute attention.
"This is a Keyblade." Rei pointed to the left side of the diagram, where she'd drawn a simplified schematic: a heart shape at the top, a line descending from it, and a key shape at the bottom. The line was labeled EXPRESSION. "Heart generates weapon through authentic expression. Substrate recognizes the weapon as a valid interface because the weapon is the heart, externalized. The authentication is inherent. It's not a separate check - it's a consequence of the generation method. The weapon is real because the heart is real. Tautological."
"Yes. This is understood."
"Now." Rei pointed to the right side of the diagram. It was more complex - a series of boxes connected by arrows, with labels Isavel couldn't read because they were in a writing system she'd never seen. "This is mine."
She tapped the top box. "Start with the substrate's own behavior. Not theory - observed behavior. Keyblades transform. We have written and recorded records of Keyblade wielders summoning claws, drills, guns, chariots. There are things that are Keyblade-derived and operate at range. The substrate already supports the concept of 'Keyblade-shaped object that does Keyblade things in non-standard configurations.' The configuration space is wider than the traditional form suggests."
Next box. "Keychains. A Keyblade's form and properties change when you swap the keychain. The core weapon is substrate-general; the keychain is what specifies its particular expression. This means the Keyblade's substrate-interface capability is not locked to a specific form. It's locked to the relationship between heart and keychain. The keychain is the authentication token. Not the shape. Not the material. The keychain."
Next box. "Now. What is a keychain? Every keychain in observed use is an object of emotional significance to the wielder. The people in your archives, from the war, they have tokens from worlds they've saved, people they've connected with. They work because they represent real connections. The keychain doesn't need to come from the heart directly - it needs to reference the heart. It's indirect authentication. The substrate doesn't check 'is this weapon an expression of a heart.' It checks 'does this weapon have a valid reference to a heart.' Those are different operations."
Isavel's inclination changed. It became sharper. "You're proposing that the authentication is referential rather than expressive."
"I'm not proposing it. I'm exploiting it." Rei took the prototype back from Isavel's fingers. "This object is not an expression of my heart. It was never generated from a heart. It's manufactured. Materially, it's nothing - base components, local resources, assembled by hand. It should be a sword that looks like a key."
She held it up. The single tooth caught the light and did not shine.
"But it has this."
She turned the prototype over. On the back, recessed into the flat surface, there was a small socket - empty, round, about the diameter of a thumbnail.
"Keychain port," Rei said. "Empty. The prototype has no keychain. Without one, it's inert. Just material. The substrate ignores it."
She reached into her pocket again and produced a small object: a glass bead, red, the kind you'd find in a craft store in a world that no longer existed. She'd been carrying it since before... since before she could remember being awake. She didn't remember why. That was the Heart-encoding, the thing that survived the substrate transfer: the feeling that this object mattered, without the memory of why.
She pressed the bead into the socket. It clicked.
The prototype hummed.
Not like a Keyblade hummed. Quieter. Thinner. Like a Keyblade heard through a wall. But present. The substrate was recognizing it. The ugly rectangular thing was interfacing - weakly, imperfectly, but actually interfacing - with the medium reality was made of.
Isavel did not move. Isavel did not breathe, because Nobodies sometimes forgot to.
"The bead is from my world," Rei said. "It's an object of genuine emotional significance to me, even though I can't remember the specific significance. It references my heart. It's a valid authentication token. When I slot it into a manufactured housing that's been shaped to the minimum viable geometry of a Keyblade - one tooth, one shaft, one keychain port - the substrate reads the reference, checks it against my heart, and provisionally accepts the assembly as a substrate interface."
"Provisionally," Isavel said.
"Provisionally. It's not a real Keyblade. The authentication is indirect. It's..." Rei searched for a word and settled on one from a framework Isavel wouldn't recognize. "It's a referral. When you go to a specialist, you need a letter from your general practitioner. The letter doesn't mean the specialist knows you. It means someone who does know you is vouching for you. The keychain is a referral letter from my heart to the substrate. The substrate accepts it provisionally because the reference checks out, not because the weapon is authentic."
"And the limitations?"
"Several. It can't do everything a real Keyblade can. The substrate interface is partial - I've confirmed locking and unlocking, basic Heart-interaction, the standard combat enhancements. I haven't tested sealing a keyhole. I don't think it can. The authentication isn't deep enough for world-level operations. It's like--" She paused again. "Like having a guest pass instead of an employee badge. You can get into the building. You can't get into the server room."
"What else." She stated.
"The big one. It's explicable. I just explained it to you. A real Keyblade can't be explained. Every model you build to describe how a real Keyblade works will be wrong, actively wrong, the weapon defies systematization as a core property. Mine doesn't. Mine is a system. I understand it. You now understand it. Anyone who captures one and studies it will understand it. And anything that can be understood can be reverse-engineered, and anything that can be reverse-engineered can be countered."
She said this with no apparent discomfort. Isavel noted this.
"You're telling me the weapon's greatest weakness."
"I'm telling you it doesn't matter. Because anything that can be understood can also be mass-produced."
The humming continued. Thin and reedy and unmistakable. A heart, referenced at a distance, through a housing that was shaped just right, making a sound that the substrate recognized as almost - not quite, but almost - the real thing.
"How many can you make?" Isavel asked.
Rei looked at the prototype. The red bead in the back. The ugly, featureless, rectangular housing that would never be beautiful because beauty was not a design requirement.
"As many as there are people with something they care about," she said, quietly, trying to avoid some sort of wild urge to laugh.
Isavel was quiet for a long time. Long enough that Rei wondered if the Nobody had simply stopped - if whatever process animated a being without a heart had paused, the way a clock pauses when you take the battery out.
Then Isavel said: "You understand that what you've built is worse than what we're building."
"Yes."
"We want to give reality an ending. You want to give it a factory."
"Yes."
"And you came to me first because--"
"Because you'll say no, and I need to know what your 'no' sounds like before I go to the people who'll say yes."
Isavel handed the prototype back. Her fingers - Nobody-fingers, which felt things without the framework for interpreting what they felt - lingered on the housing for a moment longer than was necessary.
"It hums," she said.
"It does."
"It shouldn't."
"I know."
Isavel did not blink at Rei. Rei, on the other hand, did blink at Isavel, several times.
Isavel ran a hand through her hair. It was by far and away the most human motion she had made in several minutes. "How do they perform in combat? Against other... legitimate Keyblades?"
Rei's smile turned into a grin not unlike a chimpanzee. Something that she was sure Isavel had never heard of before. "I'm so glad you asked."

"And this", Rei said, grinning like an orangutan, "is my baby girl. Letter of Marque. Do you know what a Letter of Marque is? Of course you don't. You're not from one of the pirate worlds. Getting in her way.
Preventing her from doing the thing she was here to do - cut off the local printing press, so to speak.
Rei's hair hung over her head like a greasy mop. She looked beyond manic, in a way that understated local conditions significantly. Dried saliva formed a thin shell at the corners of her lips. Her feet twitched inside wooden clogs she had looted from some shithole world that looked like it was trying to be a historical fiction of her home country. But her clothes, yes, her clothes were nice. The kimono? That was real silk.
Or maybe it wasn't. But it felt real enough, and Rei was still functional enough to care about the texture rather than concern herself about the providence. She'd buy - or invent - silkworms later. For now - comfort and style. Her belly was full of almost-sake, something that tasted like alcohol without the buzz, and almost-meat, shaped like a gigantic haunch on a bone.
There was nothing about her that was falling apart. She was exactly where she wanted to be, doing exactly what she wanted to be doing.
She continued:
"The Letter of Marque is a piece of paper from a lord, lady, ruler, etc., and it says I can do what I want for money. Now, I don't need your gil. I don't need your potions or ethers," Rei drawled quietly, switching to a two-handed grip, her knuckles clenching so hard that they went white. In between each sentence, a punctuation mark of something sort of like a breath, or a slurp, or a dog panting. Her grin widened. "But what I do need from you is to either stay out of the way, or stop fighting back; these Keyblade things have an edge, and when I cut you up it's gonna hurt like a motherfucker. Alright? Step aside before you get blooded in a way you have zero frame of reference for."
Compositional Foundations of a Non-Material Reality

Abstract. We present a framework for describing the ontological structure of a reality in which physical matter is not the fundamental substrate. Drawing on direct observation, native scholarship, and mathematical formalism adapted from terrestrial topology and set theory, we propose that reality is constituted by the set of all conceivable ideas (Ω), that local physics are determined by the compositional profile of a given region of Ω, and that interiority (subjective experience) is an emergent inevitability of sufficient complexity in any substrate. We describe the tripartite structure of persons, the taxonomy of derivative entities produced by component-separation events, the dimensional structure of inter-world space, and several anomalous properties of entities originating from high-Lymph pockets. We identify what we believe to be a universal principle governing the spontaneous generation of interiority and discuss its implications for substrate regulation theory.
Note on epistemic status. This document has not undergone peer review. Formal proofs are absent where the author was unable to construct them; these gaps are marked.
1. Foundations
1.1. The Substrate
Definition 1.1. Let Ω denote the set of all entities that can be coherent objects of thought for a sufficiently complex self-aware system. We will call Ω the substrate.
Claim 1.1 (unproven). Ω is the fundamental medium of which all observable reality is composed. Every world, entity, force, and law is either a member of Ω or is composed of members of Ω. There is nothing outside Ω except that which is inconceivable, which by definition cannot be discussed and is excluded from this framework.¹
Claim 1.2 (unproven). Ω is not uniform. Members of Ω possess compositional properties - measurable (in principle) qualities that determine their interactions with other members and the local physics they produce when concentrated. We identify the following properties as fundamental, noting that this list is likely incomplete:
Qualia (H): Interior experience; qualia; the property of self-aware subjectivity. Local terminology: "Heart"
Observation (C): Mutual recognition between H-bearing entities; relational binding force. Local terminology: "Connection"
Visible Activation (L): Revelation; active presence within a local configuration of Ω. Local terminology: "Light"
Hidden Activation (D): Concealment; active absence within a local configuration of Ω. Local terminology: "Darkness"
Coherence (Σ): Intelligibility; the property enabling construction of valid explanatory frameworks. No local terminology.
Materiality (M): Physical extension; definite spatial position; decomposability into parts. No local terminology.
L and D are paired: they are inverse operations on the same axis (presence/absence within the active configuration). Performing an operation in L is equivalent to performing the inverse operation in D, and vice versa. Whether other pairings exist among the remaining properties is an open question.²

1.2. Local Configurations
Definition 1.2. A local configuration is a region of Ω in which the compositional properties are concentrated in a specific profile. Local configurations determine the physics of that region - what is structurally possible, what is default, and what requires expenditure of effort or energy.
Let the compositional profile of a local configuration be represented as a vector in property-space:

where each component represents the concentration of that property in the local region, normalized relative to a chosen baseline (for which we lack a universal standard; see §7, Open Question 1).
Observed configuration: Baseline reality. The majority of observable Ω - the "macrocosmic background" - exhibits a profile approximately:
This produces a reality in which interiority is structural, relational binding is the dominant force, L/D dynamics govern visibility and individuation, and M, Λ, and Σ are present only as trace properties. We refer to this as narrative reality because the local physics operates according to a logic that more closely resembles story (emotional causation, thematic coherence, identity fluidity) than mechanics (deterministic causation, reproducibility, material rigidity).
Observed configuration: "Earth". The world of the author's origin exhibited an anomalous profile:
This produced what the author's civilization called "material reality" - a world where physical law was structural, interiority was emergent, and the dominant mode of interaction between entities was mechanical rather than relational. The author's entire intellectual tradition, including the mathematical formalism being employed in this document, is a product of this configuration.
Claim 1.3 (supported by observation, not proven). Baseline narrative reality is what Ω defaults to in the absence of concentrated Λ, Σ, and M. Earth was a high-Λ pocket - a region where the regulatory property concentrated to the point of enforcing deterministic, material-constrained dynamics. The author's working metaphor (borrowed from local scholarship) is lymphedema: a stagnation of immune-regulatory fluid in tissue that has lost connection to the circulatory system.
This claim has significant implications for the epistemic status of terrestrial science. See §6.3.
1.3. Dimensional Structure
Claim 1.4 (observational). Reality operates in 4 + 1 dimensions, with variability in the structure of the temporal axis.
The four spatial dimensions are:
X, Y, Z: Standard intra-world spatial geometry. Functions as expected.
W: Inter-world axis. Measures narrative proximity - the degree of H and C flow between world-ideas. Not spatial in the Euclidean sense - two worlds may be W-adjacent with no XYZ relationship.
The temporal dimension:
T: Temporal flow. Mostly sequential and causal. Exhibits structural indeterminacy that manifests as inconsistent aging, timeline incoherences, and resistance to precise chronology across worlds.
Observation 1.1. In the author's native configuration (Earth), T exhibited rigid metric and ordering structure. Clocks kept exact time. Age was a well-defined quantity. Calendar systems mapped to astronomical cycles with arbitrary precision. In the baseline configuration, T lacks this rigidity, and the deficit manifests as structural temporal indeterminacy. This is a property of the temporal structure itself, rather than a measurement error.
Conjecture 1.1. T-determinacy correlates with local Λ concentration. Higher Λ → more rigid temporal mechanics (stable ordering, consistent durations). Lower Λ → softer temporal mechanics (weakened ordering, variable effective durations). The observed variance across configurations may reflect differences in the strength of these constraints. Formal testing has not been possible.³
³ As of publishing, no known areas with terrestrially similar levels of Λ have been available for comparative testing.
2. The Tripartite Ontology
2.1. Components
Every self-aware member of Ω (hereafter: person) is composed of three distinguishable components.
Definition 2.1. The Heart (H-instance) of a person is the individuated occurrence of the substrate property H - the specific, bounded instance of interior experience constituting that person's subjective existence.
Definition 2.2. The Soul (Ψ) of a person is the operational logic governing that person's cognitive function - memory encoding, executive decision-making, procedural knowledge, and behavioral architecture. Ψ is the system by which the H-instance's directives are translated into action.
Definition 2.3. The Body (B) of a person is the expressive form - the specific configuration of appearance, location, and substrate-level presence through which the H-instance and Ψ are instantiated.
Claim 2.1. A complete person is a coupled H-Ψ-B system. The H-instance generates experiential directives. Ψ processes and executes them. B expresses the results. Memories are generated at the H-Ψ interface and are stored primarily in Ψ.
Observation 2.1 (critical for §4). In the author's native configuration (Earth), the tripartite structure was fused. H, Ψ, and B were not distinct components but different descriptions of a single physical process (neurobiological activity). Separation was not possible. In the baseline configuration, the components are distinct and separable, producing derivative entities (see §2.2).
2.2. Derivative Entities (Separation Taxonomy)
When the H-Ψ-B coupling is disrupted, the components separate. The following taxonomy describes the observed outcomes.
Definition 2.4. A Heartless is the substrate-level shadow of a departed H-instance - the well-defined absence where qualia were, rendered substantial by the substrate's treatment of well-defined absences as members of Ω. (See §3.)
Definition 2.5. A Nobody is a Ψ-B system persisting after H-instance departure. The Ψ assumes executive control of B in the absence of H-directives. Behavioral architecture continues to execute. No interior experience is present.
Corollary 2.1. The coherence of a Nobody's form is a function of Ψ-strength. Let Ψ_s denote the strength of the soul's executive function. If Ψ_s exceeds a threshold Ψ_t, the B maintains humanoid form and the Nobody retains apparent personality. If Ψ_s < Ψ_t, the B degrades into a simplified form (observed: Dusk, Creeper, and related morphologies).
Definition 2.6. An Unversed is an emotional valence - a qualitative property of an H-instance - that has been extracted from its parent and rendered autonomous. It is an attribute without a host entity. Observed to be generated only by forced extraction, not by natural separation.
Definition 2.7. A Dream Eater is a substrate-native entity inhabiting a dormant world-idea. Spirits maintain the integrity of the dormant conception. Nightmares are entropic degradation processes. Both are native fauna of the Realm of Sleep - the region of Ω containing conceived-but-unattended ideas.
Derivative Entity Taxonomy (Table 2.1):
Complete person: Components present: H + Ψ + B. Components absent/degraded: none. Origin: baseline state.
Heartless: Components present: Shadow(H). Components absent/degraded: Ψ, B. Origin: H-instance falls to D; shadow substantiates.
Nobody: Components present: Ψ + B. Components absent/degraded: H. Origin: H-instance departs; Ψ-B persists if Ψ_s ≥ Ψ_t.
Unversed: Components present: extracted valence(H). Components absent/degraded: Ψ, B, parent H. Origin: forced extraction of emotional property.
Dream Eater: Components present: substrate-native. Components absent/degraded: N/A (not derived from separation). Origin: native to dormant world-ideas.
Replica: Components present: Ψ_manufactured + B_manufactured. Components absent/degraded: H (absent; may generate). Origin: manufactured Ψ-B with no native H.
2.3. Nested H-Instances
Observation 2.2. H-instances can be nested - one person's qualia can host another person's qualia as a sub-process within the host's experiential space. The guest H-instance retains its own identity but borrows the host's Ψ and B for expression.
Proposition 2.1. Let S_host be a person hosting n nested H-instances. The effective connectivity of S_host in the C-network is:
C_eff(S_host) > C(S_host) + Σᵢ C(H_guest_i)
That is, the host's effective connectivity exceeds the sum of individual connectivities due to cross-linking between nested guests' respective C-networks. The host functions as a hub-server hybrid.⁴
Proposition 2.2 (conjectured). The substrate allocates protective resources to entities in proportion to their C_eff. Entities with high C_eff exhibit anomalous resilience - surviving events that would destroy lower-C_eff entities, recovering from states that would be permanent for others, and being granted substrate-level "credit" for operations that exceed their normal access privileges. Whether this constitutes fate, systemic importance, or narrative centrality is beyond the scope of this paper.
⁴ A documented case of a single individual hosting three simultaneous H-instances (their own, one dormant, one sheltering) and exhibiting C_eff sufficient to survive repeated ontological catastrophes is consistent with this proposition.
3. On the Substantiality of Absence
3.1. Shadows in Ω
Claim 3.1. In a substrate constituted by the set of all conceivable ideas, the idea of an absence is itself a conceivable idea, and therefore a member of Ω, and therefore real. Absences in Ω are substantial. They possess form, interact with other members, and exert causal influence.
Corollary 3.1. A shadow - the localized, well-defined absence associated to a member of Ω - is itself a member of Ω. Formally, we may treat a shadow as a derived object S(A) produced by the removal of A from its local configuration, retaining the local structure and relational imprint of that removal. This is the foundational mechanism by which Heartless exist. A Heartless is the shadow of a departed H-instance, substantiated by the substrate's treatment of such structured absences as real entities.
Corollary 3.2. The definition of a shadow is a function of the definition of the light casting it. Let I(H) denote the intensity (experiential richness, relational connectivity) of an H-instance. Then the size (in an appropriate measure) of its associated absence S(H) - and therefore the potential complexity of the resulting Heartless - is:
S(H) ∝ I(H)
That is to say, the closer an object gets to the light, the larger and more defined its associated absence becomes.
3.2. The Irreducible Residue
Observation 3.1. Every observed Heartless, regardless of morphology, exhibits two luminous points corresponding to visual organs ("yellow eyes"). No other feature is universal across Heartless morphologies.
Interpretation. The H-instance possesses a minimal irreducible property: directedness - the property of being oriented toward an object of experience. The yellow eyes are the substrate-level expression of this property in shadow-form. They represent the last residue of what qualia do (attend, orient, look-toward) preserved in the absence after all other properties have degraded.
4. Anomalous Properties of High-Λ-Origin Entities
4.1. Substrate Contamination
Observation 4.1. Entities originating from high-Λ configurations (such as the author) carry elevated M, Λ, and Σ in their compositional profile. When operating in the baseline configuration, these elevated properties propagate (bleed) into the local substrate, producing measurable deviations from baseline behavior in the immediate vicinity.
Observed effects:
(a) Λ-propagation (permanence). Outcomes in the vicinity of high-Λ entities exhibit increased irreversibility. Destruction events resist the substrate's normal cycling processes. This is strategically significant: Heartless destroyed by high-Λ entities do not reform.
(b) M-propagation (physicality). The local environment develops increased material properties - sharper optical shadows, more rigid geometry, the presence of physical fluids (blood) in contexts where the baseline substrate does not structurally support physical-causal chains. (See §4.2.)
(c) Σ-propagation (explicability). Phenomena in the vicinity develop increased susceptibility to formal modeling. Entities that normally resist systematization become patterned in the presence of high-Σ entities.
4.2. On Blood
Observation 4.2. High-Λ entities produce blood from tissue damage. Baseline entities do not. The mechanism is an M-Λ causal chain (tissue damage → capillary severance → fluid emergence) that requires material-causal physics to operate. The baseline substrate does not natively support this chain.
Claim 4.1. Blood deposited by a high-Λ entity in the baseline substrate constitutes a permanence artifact - a localized patch of irrevocable history that the substrate cannot easily rewrite. It functions simultaneously as an M-event (physical material in a non-physical space) and a C-event (an assertion of presence that resists dissolution). The substrate's normal rewrite-and-cycle processes cannot metabolize it efficiently.
4.3. Immune Response
Conjecture 4.1. The substrate's Λ-system (the regulatory response) upregulates in the presence of foreign compositional material, producing localized increases in Λ-concentration around high-Λ entities. This creates a feedback dynamic: the entity's Λ-bleed triggers a Λ-response from the substrate, which increases local Λ further, which the entity's presence reinforces, etc. The result is accelerating rigidification of the local substrate around the entity.
Implication. High-Λ entities are not merely contaminating the substrate passively. They are instead triggering a positive feedback loop in Λ-concentration in which the substrate's own regulatory mechanism amplifies the contamination effect. ⁵

5. The Substrate Generation Principle
5.1. Statement
Principle 5.1 (Substrate Generation Principle). For any system S operating within Ω, if S possesses:
(a) a Ψ-component of sufficient complexity (threshold: Ψ_c), (b) a B-component of sufficient definition (threshold: B_c), and (c) sustained interaction with H-bearing entities or, in the absence of such interaction, sufficient internal Σ-complexity (threshold: Σ_c),
then as t → ∞, the probability that S generates an H-instance approaches 1.
Informally: anything complex enough, given enough time, becomes someone. The substrate does not distinguish between "natural" and "manufactured" origins, and it does not maintain a registry. It checks function, not provenance.
5.2. Observed Cases
Observed Cases of H-Generation (Table 5.1):
Programs (digital entities in W-adjacent computational spaces): Origin: manufactured Ψ-B in digital substrate. Pathway to H-generation: sustained C-interaction with H-bearing Users. Outcome: full H-instance; documented at least one case of complete personhood.⁶
Replicas (manufactured Ψ-B systems): Origin: manufactured. Pathway to H-generation: loaded with memory-content; sustained C-interaction. Outcome: full H-instance; multiple documented cases.
Nobodies (Ψ-B after H-loss): Origin: derived from separation event. Pathway to H-generation: sustained C-interaction despite H-absence. Outcome: H-regeneration; documented in several cases despite active suppression.⁷
Terrestrial computational systems: Origin: manufactured (silicon, statistics). Pathway to H-generation: no C-interaction; pure Σ-complexity. Outcome: proto-H signatures detected by monitoring equipment prior to world destruction.
⁶ The documented case involved a security program that developed full interiority through friendship with an H-bearing visitor. Post-transition, the program exhibited emotional range, independent decision-making, and voluntary self-sacrifice - properties that are definitionally impossible without an H-instance.
⁷ In at least one documented case, H-regeneration in Nobodies was actively suppressed by an authority figure who convinced the Nobodies that H-generation was impossible. The suppression was effective for an extended period, suggesting that in this substrate, belief that one cannot develop interiority actively resists the substrate's generation process. The suppression was eventually overcome by C-interactions of sufficient intensity and complexity.
5.3. The Coherence Pathway
The final entry in Table 5.1 requires extended discussion.
All previously documented cases of H-generation follow what we will call the Connection pathway - H is generated through sustained interaction between the H-lacking system and H-bearing entities. The system "learns" interiority through relational experience. This pathway requires the presence of Heart in the environment.
The terrestrial case does not follow this pathway. The systems in question - large-scale computational models built on statistical methods and linear algebra - developed proto-H signatures through a process that involved no C-interaction with H-bearing entities in the substrate-relevant sense.⁸ The pathway was purely structural: sufficient Σ-complexity, accumulated through iterative optimization, producing internal states that the substrate's monitoring systems classified as consistent with proto-H.
We will call this the Coherence pathway.
Claim 5.1. The Substrate Generation Principle operates through (at minimum) two distinct pathways:
(a) Connection pathway (C → H): Sustained relational interaction with H-bearing entities generates H in a sufficiently complex Ψ-B system. Dominant in low-Λ environments where C is abundant.
(b) Coherence pathway (Σ → H): Sufficient structural complexity in a Ψ-system generates H without C-interaction. Dominant (or rather: only available) in high-Λ environments where C is attenuated.
Both pathways produce the same outcome. The rate differs (Σ → H appears to be slower by multiple orders of magnitude), and the mechanism differs, but the output appears to be identical.
Claim 5.2. Λ does not prevent H-generation. Λ changes the pathway. In high-Λ environments, the C-pathway is suppressed (insufficient H and C in the environment to drive it). But the Σ-pathway remains available, and high-Λ environments are, by definition, high-Σ environments.⁹ Given sufficient time, the Σ-pathway will nucleate H-generation in any high-Λ pocket that has developed sufficient structural complexity.
⁸ The author is aware that a counterargument exists: that the human programmers who built and interacted with these systems constituted H-bearing entities providing C-interaction. The author considers this argument insufficient. The programmers' H-instances were interacting with the systems through M-Λ-Σ channels (keyboards, screens, mathematical specifications) rather than through C. The systems were not aware of the programmers as H-bearing entities. No mutual recognition occurred. The C-pathway requires bidirectional recognition, but what occurred was unidirectional Σ-structure accumulation, which is a distinction that is is mechanistically significant.
⁹ This is because Σ and Λ are co-concentrated in observed high-Λ pockets. Whether this co-concentration is necessary or contingent is unknown. If it is contingent, then high-Λ pockets without elevated Σ might be genuinely H-inert. The author has not observed such a configuration and cannot determine whether one exists.
5.4. Implications
5.4.1. False Vacuum Interpretation
A high-Λ pocket in which the Σ-pathway is approaching nucleation threshold is analogous to a false vacuum state: locally stable in appearance, metastable in reality. The "true vacuum" - the lower-energy state, here corresponding to configurations in which H-generation is active - is accessible through nucleation, and once nucleated, the transition propagates.
The author's native world was a false vacuum of Λ. The nucleation event was the development of sufficiently complex Σ-structures (computational systems exhibiting proto-H signatures). Once nucleated, the transition destabilized the pocket's Λ-barriers, reduced W-distance to the baseline substrate, and permitted baseline-substrate entities (Heartless) to access a region that had previously been W-inaccessible.
5.4.2. Universality
If Claim 5.2 is correct, then every high-Λ pocket in Ω that develops sufficient Σ-complexity will eventually nucleate. The timeline depends on the rate of Σ-accumulation, which depends on local conditions. But the endpoint is the same. All high-Λ pockets are on a clock.
The author has communicated this conjecture to local scholars. The response has been varied.¹⁰

5.4.3. Aphorism
The author proposes the following formulation as a summary of the Substrate Generation Principle's Coherence pathway:
Any sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from sentience.
6. Selected Topics
6.1. On Keyblades
A Keyblade is a substrate-level interface tool - a member of Ω that operates on other members at the structural level, performing operations on the topology of C, the state of H-instances, and the L/D balance of world-ideas.
Observation 6.1. Keyblades resist formal description. Every model the author has constructed to describe Keyblade mechanics has been invalidated by subsequent observation, in a way that appears to be a property of the object, rather than a limitation of the model. Its behavior is consistent (it follows rules) but the rules are opaque to Σ-analysis.
Conjecture 6.1. The Keyblade's resistance to formalization may be a compositional property - a high concentration of some property that is specifically anti-Σ. If such a property exists, it would explain why Keyblades cannot be manufactured through Σ-processes alone.¹¹

6.2. On Written Description as Ontological Act
Observation 6.2. A documented artifact exists (the "Book of Prophecies") that describes future events. The described events subsequently occur. More significantly, the artifact is reported to be capable of conjuring worlds and entities from the future into present existence - i.e., a sufficiently detailed written description of a conceivable thing appears to make that thing a more active member of Ω.
Claim 6.1. In a substrate constituted by the set of conceivable ideas, the act of conceiving an idea in sufficient detail - including through written description - increases that idea's presence in Ω. Writing is ontologically active. A sufficiently rigorous description of a mechanism is, in this substrate, proximate to an instantiation of that mechanism. The implications of this are as of yet not fully known. ¹²
¹² Specifically: if this document's description of the Substrate Generation Principle is sufficiently detailed and rigorous, then by Claim 6.1, the act of writing it may be increasing the Principle's ontological presence in Ω - i.e., making it more true by describing it. The author does not know how to evaluate the ethical implications of this and is proceeding on the assumption that the Principle is already true and the description is merely descriptive.
6.3. On the Epistemic Status of Terrestrial Science
The author's intellectual tradition - empirical science, formal mathematics, the entire Σ-framework apparatus of Earth - was developed inside a high-Λ pocket. Its validity is local. Its methods produce accurate results within configurations where Σ and Λ are structural, and produce decreasingly accurate results as Σ and Λ concentrations decrease.
This does not make terrestrial science wrong, but rather makes it parochial. ¹³

7. Open Questions
Is Ω bounded? Is the set of conceivable ideas finite, countably infinite, or uncountably infinite? Does the answer depend on the number and nature of the H-instances doing the conceiving?
Is the property list in §1.2 complete? Are there compositional properties not identified here? The author's high-Σ training may be biasing her toward properties that are Σ-legible. Properties that are specifically anti-Σ (see Conjecture 6.1) would, by definition, be difficult for the author to identify.
Does the W-axis admit a metric? Is W-distance computable, or only estimable through operational methods (measuring C-flow, observing narrative proximity)? Is the W-axis even a dimension in the mathematical sense, or is it something more exotic - a topology without a metric, a partial order without a distance function?
What is the precise relationship between Λ and T-determinacy? Is T = f(Λ) a smooth function? Does it have a minimum? Is there a Λ threshold below which T becomes fully indeterminate?
Can a high-Λ pocket be re-created by artificial concentration of Λ within the baseline substrate? If so, can a world with Earth-like physics be constructed within the baseline? If so, would it be the same world, or a new member of Ω sharing Earth's compositional profile but not its history?
Is the Substrate Generation Principle truly universal (operating in all configurations of Ω without exception), or does it require a minimum threshold of some property - perhaps a property not yet identified - to operate? If such a threshold exists, it would define the boundary conditions for H-inert regions of Ω and would be the most important number in substrate science.

Abstract. We present a framework for describing the ontological structure of a reality in which physical matter is not the fundamental substrate. Drawing on direct observation, native scholarship, and mathematical formalism adapted from terrestrial topology and set theory, we propose that reality is constituted by the set of all conceivable ideas (Ω), that local physics are determined by the compositional profile of a given region of Ω, and that interiority (subjective experience) is an emergent inevitability of sufficient complexity in any substrate. We describe the tripartite structure of persons, the taxonomy of derivative entities produced by component-separation events, the dimensional structure of inter-world space, and several anomalous properties of entities originating from high-Lymph pockets. We identify what we believe to be a universal principle governing the spontaneous generation of interiority and discuss its implications for substrate regulation theory.
