State Quarters: Which one is the hardest to find?
We covered the America the Beautiful series rares, but what about the original 50 State Quarters (1999-2008)?
While billions were made, one stands out as the undisputed “key date” for collectors searching their change: the 2008-P Oklahoma quarter.
Why? It had the lowest total mintage of the entire program at just over 222 million from the Philadelphia mint (the 'D' Denver mintage was higher). “Low” is relative, but compared to Connecticut’s 1.3 billion, it’s scarce! The design (the state bird flying over a classic tribute to the “Dust Bowl” era) is also stunning.
So, next time you get a quarter, flip it. If it’s Oklahoma 2008 with a ‘P’ mint mark (or no mint mark), give it a second look!
