Notes: this is @samanddeaninpanties fault ilybby<3

The first time that it happened, it was absolutely Castielâs fault and he accepted full blame.
Although he wouldnât think of himself as timid, by any means, there was a sense of hesitation when he became wholly and - most likely - irreversibly human that it took some pushing to explore himself as a human. Castiel had exercised free will more than most angels had, but he was also accustomed to such flexing of his independence as a thing that ended catastrophically.
Literally, catastrophically.
And no, trying different toppings on his sandwiches or picking out his own clothes at GoodWill werenât the sort of decisions that could lead to another apocalypse.
So, Castiel had been in the process of taking initiative and exploring what he wanted.
When that initiative happened to be kissing Kevin in the library, he was definitely at fault when they were caught.
It was not a new aspect to their relationship, the touching and the kissing - Castiel enjoyed these parts of being human - but the impulse to touch when Kevin was reaching for the top shelf on his toes and his shirt rid up, it seized Castiel suddenly. Touching had turned into kissing, a soft one to the back of Kevinâs neck to start, then more across his jaw and over his lips when he had turned in Castielâs arms to return the affection.
There may have been rubbing involved, hip to hip, by the time that Sam had found them.
-
The second time that it happened, it was both of their faults and neither had seen it coming.
It was Kevinâs idea to start hunting as a duo, away from Sam and Dean - and for as much as Castiel loved his found family, he could agree that they needed time apart sometimes.
Still high strung with the tension of a hunt and giddy on the success of it, they had barely parked when Kevin was across the seat pulling at Castielâs clothes, mouth hot against his neck, and Castiel was happy to push back. Guide him to leaning against the door, tug his jeans open, suck down his cock.
It was enjoyable, getting used to living in his body as a humans. The lingering hurts of the hunt barely proved distraction, the  aching muscles and a twinge in his lower back and gravedirt gritty under his nails. Not when the car was hot with their shared breath and Kevin was shuddering beneath him.
Only, apparently Dean had been looking out for them to return to the bunker after Castiel had texted they would be home that night, and he had come to find them.
Dean did not cover his eyes and run away like Sam.
Dean rapped his knuckles on the door window and winked at them.
-
The third time that it happened, was absolutely neither of their faults.
One would assumed that a private bed in a private bedroom was a safe place to engage in intercourse. This was what Castiel had been led to belief. Dean had lectured him on boundaries once. Laid out all the little quirks to being a human. Castiel understood this better now.
It could be argued that Castiel should have had the forethought to lock the door to their room. But he had not locked it the night before, and when he was roused in the morning to Kevinâs erection against the small of his back and a hand creeping over his hip, well, of course he wasnât in the mood to get up and check that the door was locked. The only thing Castiel cared to do was part his thighs enough to bring Kevin between and rock back against him.
Dean had appalling manners and did not knock.
Castiel had been on the crest of orgasm, thrusting into the firm grip of Kevinâs hand, teeth scraping against the back of his shoulder and the sheets warm around them and it was perfect until the door banged against the wall and Dean announced pancakes for breakfast.
Castiel had a growing suspicion that Dean was, as Dean would say it, fucking with them.
-
There was a legitimate reason for Castiel to be in the storeroom that led into the dungeon.
He had been researching a weapon that might be useful for a potential case, when Kevin had found him to tell him that the Men of Letterâs didnât have the right one in storage.
And as the opportunity had presented itself - privacy, definitely quiet privacy from both of the Winchesters - the two of them had seized it.
None of them used the dungeon anymore, after things had quieted down and it was only the occasional disturbance of a ghost or vampire that got them out hunting. So when Kevin had the idea of pulling back the storage shelves and hiding somewhere no one would come barging in, Castiel was easily led by the end of his belt.
Fumbling to pull the heavy shelves shut behind them, Castiel almost tripped with his jeans around his ankles, turned and pushed Kevin up against the wall. Sinking to the floor, he kissed Kevinâs belly as he pulled his shirt up, sucked his cock with the growing proficiency Castiel was eager to master.
Kevin was a smart man and had brought lube with him when he came to find Castiel with information about the weapon he was looking for.
Ah.
They would find something else for the hunt.
Slick and hot and squirming on Castielâs fingers, Kevin didnât attempt to muffle the noises he made as they echoed in the cavernous room. Castiel knew the process of this, of kissing and foreplay and preparation, but it sometimes startled him how things blurred together with the heat and urgency of it, how fast he ended up inside of Kevin, strong legs wrapped around Castielâs waist as he fucked Kevin against the wall.
Hands fisted in Castielâs shirt - he was still mostly clothed, jeans around his ankles, shirt on; wasnât the removal of clothes supposed to be part of the process? - Kevin was wrapped around him and moaning into Castielâs neck when the world quite suddenly tilted away.
Stumbling forward, through the shelves that shifted and parted in front of them, Castiel tripped on his jeans, twisted sideways to keep Kevin from falling on the concrete, and slammed down hard onto his shoulder with a blinding jolt of pain.
-
âIn the dungeon, seriously Cas?â
Dean sounded miffed. It was unfathomable why. On the other side of the kitchen, he was carefully studying the bruising on Kevinâs face before deeming nothing broken and slapping a bag of peas over the side that had smacked on the floor.
âItâs not like you respect the privacy of our bedroom.â Castiel shot back.
âThat was one time!â
âOkay, Cas,â Sam told him, hands careful on Castielâs shoulder and arm, âitâs just dislocated, I can pop it back in. On the count of threeâŚâ
Kevin winced in sympathy on the count of two when Sam jerked and slammed something and Castiel involuntarily screamed.
âWho dislocates their shoulder during sex?â Dean was pacing.
âApparently, I do.â
âYou uh,â looking uncomfortable next to him, Sam waved a hand in front of his crotch, âYou didnât, hurt anything else did you? I donât know if I can help with that, we might have to go to the hospital.â
âOh my god did you break your dick?â Dean gaped at him.
âI did not injure my penis. Thank you for the concern Sam.â It was a bit of a hazy memory, but everything seemed to be fine, although, âAre you alright Kevin?â
Covering the half of his face that wasnât covered with peas, Kevin mumbled through his fingers, âItâs fine. Sorebutfine. I need a drink.â
Dean pointed a finger, âThat, I can do.â
Castielâs shoulder was throbbing and he finally felt that he was beginning to understand a very human sense of shame about his sexual activities. âI would like a drink as well.â
âI think we all need one,â Dean said.
He had come running when he heard things falling off the shelves with a loud crash. Castiel, for some reason he cannot fathom, had still been erect after dislocating his shoulder.
âYeah, me too.â Sam settled at the kitchen table, giving Kevin a sympathetic smile.
âBut I swear,â Dean warned, âif you two get kinky in the shower and fall, I am not helping.â
âAll you did was put a bag of peas on my face,â Kevin told him.
âHey, I helped.â
Kevin slapped the peas on the table and glared at Dean, âIt would be better if you could learn how to knock.â
Dean rolled his eyes.
Castiel, cradling a cold beer in the hand of his non-injured arm, shared a commiserating look with Sam as Dean and Kevin resuscitated their ongoing list of grievances in regards to sharing living spaces.

Notes: for the SPN Rare Pair Bingo, square used âyouâve been blasting Adele for the last three days, are you ok?â
-
Senior year was definitely a lot better than all three previous years of school. True, it was stressful and hectic with grad school applications and his honors thesis, but there was one major factor that made his life so much better. Kevin had been able to get into the shiny new senior housing on campus. Goodbye dorms, goodbye shoe box rooms, goodbye three shower stalls for a floor full of boys.
The senior housing apartments were nice. He had room mates still, but they each got their own room in a unit with shared kitchen and living room. Not only that, there were two bathrooms â he only had to share with one other guy. It was fantastic.
True, he could have gone for off campus apartment earlier, but his scholarships only covered on campus housing.
His room mates were pretty cool too. If they werenât so busy with school, Kevin would probably be better friends with them than just mumbled hellos over breakfast and blood shot eyes over the coffee pot at three am during an all nighter. Kevin shared a few beers with Sam every now and then, and Garth was almost overly friendly but he was harmless. Cas didnât come out of his room much, he was pretty weird, but quiet and thus a good room mate.
No one, however, was a good room mate â or decent human being â in the weeks winding down to finals. Sam was snappy, Garth was in a constant state of panicked frenzy, Kevin lived on coffee and caffeine pills, their apartment was a mess and Cas, well he apparently was averse to headphones to spare everyone else in the apartment the misery of his music tastes.
When Kevin heard the familiar strains of the same Adele CD that had been playing on loop for a few days - on a nice Saturday afternoon when he had projects to finish and tests to study for - instead of complaining about it he packed up and headed to the library.
The library was open late for three weeks before finals, but it did have to close at midnight. Grabbing coffee from a 24/7 Starbucks on the way home, Kevin was set for another all nighter cramming but when he kicked off his shoes inside their apartment, he could still hear that goddam Adele CD playing, the very same one that he had left because of that morning.
There was only so much he could take.
Sam and Garth were no where to be found, so it was up to Kevin. He was tired and hungry and every time he blinked he saw numbers on the inside of his eyelids and he just could not listen to this CD one more time.
Pounding on the door to Casâ room, Kevin was maybe feeling a little bitchy, but the moment Cas opened the door â eyes red rimmed, hair wild, in a ratty t-shirt and boxers â Kevin stumbled over what he was going to say.
âHey â uh⌠you okay Cas?â
He could see a tick in the other guyâs jaw. âIâm fine.â
God, he reeked of alcohol and desperation and Kevin tried to remember the last time heâd actually seen Cas outside his room.
âDude youâve been blasting Adele for the last three days, you are not okay.â
His shoulders slumped and Cas squinted at the floor, mumbling another âIâm fineâ before trying to shut the door on Kevin.
Pushing it open, Kevin stepped into his room, taking the complete mess that was really nothing like what heâd seen of Cas so far, always neat pressed and on top of school.
âWhatâs going on?â
Cas sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. âItâs been a long week.â
âYou clearly need better coping mechanisms.â
âI am aware of that, however, I am entirely unmotivated to change at this point.â
The Adele was still blaring, âCan we at least turn the music off, this CD is really getting on my nerves.â
Cas almost tripped on a bottle on his way across the room to shut his stereo off.
Kevin leaned against the door frame, still not going away, âWouldnât of figured you were a fan of hers.â
âI like a lot of different music.â
âStill not going to tell me whatâs going on?â
âNo.â
Rolling his eyes, Kevin stepped carefully over to Cas and grabbed his shirt, dragging him in the direction of the bathroom, âOkay, one, you reek â take a shower and brush your teeth. Two, I canât remember when I saw you out of the room last, Iâm gonna make dinner. Come out when youâre done.â
Cas scowled at Kevin, but let himself be herded into the bathroom where Kevin turned on the shower head before leaving and shutting the door. He had been so focused on school himself that he was probably being counterproductive because a deficiency of sleep and inadequate eating patterns could sap focus and reduce intelligence, so really, Kevin could use a break and he could definitely use food too.
-
This being finals week and college, food turned out to be Ramen noodles because the cupboards in their shared kitchen were almost bare. Kevin managed to scrounge up an old can of peas and carrots too, adding that in for a little color and variety. He had plenty of coffee though, and put on a pot while the noodles simmered.
Cas came out of the bathroom in boxers and an inside out tee shirt, but it was an improvement. Pink cheeked, thick stubble on his jaw, he shuffled over to the kitchen table and sat down. Kevin put a mug of coffee with a spoon of sugar in front of him.
âThank you.â
âDonât mention it.â
Mixing in the flavor powder, Kevin split up the Ramen and sat down at the table with his own mug of coffee.
Cas practically inhaled the soup.
Kevin considered pushing his over, but it was actually pretty good with peas and carrots in it. âAre you still hungry? I think we have some tuna and crackers.â
Cas grunted and stood, taking his bowl to the sink and washing it before searching the cupboards for the tuna and crackers. He settled back at the table with just the open can and the box of crackers.
âThis is more than just finals stress, isnât it? You sure youâre ok Cas?â
Scrubbing his eyes, slumped over the table, Cas shrugged. âIn the past week Iâve found out that my dad is back in rehab, Iâm failing calculus, my favorite pair of jeans ripped, and I broke up with Cain.â
âShit.â
âYeah.â
âWhyâd you two break up?â
âIâd rather not talk about it.â
âYeah, no thatâs totally fine. I uh, Iâm not really good at this kind of stuff, but I could help you study for calculus?â
Sipping his coffee, Cas offered a weak smile. âI know youâre busy with your own school work.â
âI really donât mind, Iâm going crazy working on my thesis paper, but math is actually pretty relaxing. I could use the break.â
Clearing the table, Cas refilled their coffee mugs. âYouâre a very good friend Kevin.â
âCome on, grab your books, weâre studying in my room because yours is a wreck.â
-
It was five A.M by the time they closed their books. Cas was wicked smart but he had problems grasping the concepts the way the text explained them. Kevin just spun the theory from different angles until Cas latched on and then it wasnât too bad. If he aced his final heâd pull through the class.
Jotting down a few more notes, legs folded on top of Kevinâs bed where theyâd sprawled with pillows a few hours ago, Cas finally set everything aside. Kevin was yawning and weirdly still a little twitchy from all the coffee even though he was brain dead.
âI canât believe you made that make sense. Thank you so much Kevin.â
Waving him off, Kevin face planted on the bed wedged between Cas and the wall. âSâno problem.â
Cas shifted away a little, looked down at Kevin, then at the door. Kevin decided to just loop an arm around his stomach and tug him back. He was warm. And he smelled good now that he was freshly showered. Kevin didnât really have a lot of people in his bed. Like, ever. He didnât really want anything other than someone to curl up next to. Was rebound cuddles a thing? It should totally be a thing.
âWeâll clean your bedroom together tomorrow, ok. You can stay here if you want. Just to cuddle.â
Cas stretched out on the bed, shuffling under the sheets and lying facing Kevin. Tentatively, he settled a hand on Kevinâs hip and it was a warm, comfortable weight. Kevin scooted closer and nudged his face against Casâ chest.
âAre you sure this is all right?â
âDefinitely. Go to sleep Cas.â
There was a light kiss on the top of his head and Cas wrapped an arm tighter around Kevin. He could feel the moment Cas actually relaxed, sagging against the too-hard, too-small mattress and curling up against Kevin. It was nice and that all he needed to know right now, they could think about it more in the morning over coffee.

Square Completed: Kevin & Castiel
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: ~1200
Cas and Kevin decide to get drunk together. Â Newly human, Cas needs a distraction from his general undesirability and powerlessness. Â And Kevin just... wants to not think about the general unfairness of his entire life. Â But naturally, the alcohol and the silence stretching between them only seems to make him dwell harder. Â
Finally Kevin cracks. âI mean, look at me.  Iâm 18 years old, a high school dropout with no prospects, I have three people in the world, two of whom probably resent me because Iâm a fucking burden, and at this rate I probably wonât even make it to drinking age.â  He leans his head back against the couch, staring at the ceiling. âI should be in college.  I used to have goals that involved more than just not dying.  I should have a girlfriend.  Or⌠boyfriend.â He coughs and looks sideways at Castiel whose expression doesnât change a whit at the admission.  âAnd on top of all of that, Iâm a fucking virgin.â
That admission has Cas tilting his head. Â âIs the concept of having sex so essential to being human?â Â
Kevin snorts beside him and knocks their legs together. Â âItâs like, what every teenage boy aspires to do.â Â
Cas is silent for a moment, choosing his words carefully. Â âBut is it what you desire?â
Kevin was clearly not expecting that question, and he sighs and rubs a hand over his jaw. Â Silence stretches between them, and Kevin boldly reaches out to grasp Casâ hand. Â Castiel looks at him but doesnât pull away. Â Instead he turns his hand to bring them palm-to-palm and entwines their fingers together.
âI thought it was what I was supposed to want,â Kevin admits, quietly, eyes riveted to their joined hands. Â âBut what I actually want is just.. intimacy. Â I mean, I donât want sex, I just want to be held.â
Kevin sees Cas nodding out of his peripheral vision, like Cas actually knows what heâs talking about, and Kevin closes his eyes and tips his head back again. Â âI donât think Iâm even making sense.â Â
Cas makes a sound of dissent. âSkin hunger,â he says thoughtfully. Â âYouâre touch starved.â
âIâm what?â
âHumans. Â They have a need, fundamentally, for physical affection. Â Especially, but not necessarily, skin to skin contact,â Cas pauses, deliberately. Â âHow often are you touched, Kevin?â Â
Kevin thought about laughing, but he glanced down to their joined hands and thought about how good it felt to have someoneâs hand in his. Â Nothing sexual, just that closeness that he hadnât even realized just how much he had been craving. Â When had he last been touched? Â Even just casually? Â
âI think Dean gave me a hug like, a year ago,â Â he replies. Â No small amount of bitterness entering his tone at the realization of just how alone he had been for so long.
Cas squeezes his hand briefly before turning toward him on the couch. Â âDo you trust me?â
âAs much as I trust anyone these days.â
âWill you lie here with me?â Â
Well. Â Kevin hadnât been expecting that turn. Â
âUm,â he hesitates. Â âSure?â Â
âIf you donât feel comfortable, Kevin, that is okay. Â But I believe this will help both of us. Â I donât intend anything sexual.â
Kevin nods with a little more surety at that, and Castiel turns on the couch laying on his side, nestled against the back of the sofa, and gestures for Kevin to lay next to him next to the edge. Â Kevin debates laying facing Cas, but decides heâd rather not have to look at him. Â He couldnât face the evidence of just how weak he felt. Â
As soon as he lays down, Casâs arms wrap around him, holding him close but not too tight. Â One beneath his arm, the other over his hip; coming to rest over his chest and stomach respectively. Â Slowly, tension leaks from Kevinâs frame, and he feels Casâs arms loosen in relaxation. Â
Cas breaks the silence around them. Â âIâve been human less than two months, and I crave human touch daily. Â I had sex with a woman, who turned out to be a reaper, because I thought it would cure my need for affection. Â But I find that I also do not desire sex. Â Yet I could not go even another two weeks without this. Â You are so strong, Kevin, but you donât deserve to be alone.â
Kevin feels his eyes fill with tears. Â He tries to stop them, but just as suddenly a sob wracks his body. Â And then another, until he finds himself shaking and crying uncontrollably in the safety of Castielâs arms. Â He buries his face in the cushion of the couch; can feel his tears wetting the cloth beneath him.
Slowly, he feels the tears slow, the sobs come less harshly, and Kevin settles enough to register Castiel rubbing circles on his back, forehead resting against Kevinâs hair, making soothing noises. Â Kevin falls asleep cradled there. Â
He wakes to whispered conversation, can hear Deanâs voice from the doorway, and feel more than hear Casâs sleep-deep rumbling reply. Â Casâs hand comes up to shoo Dean out the door, and Kevin smiles when his arm comes back around to hold Kevin again, Casâs large hand settling gently over his heart.
âHave you lost feeling to your left hand yet?â Kevin asks when he realizes heâs still laying atop one of Casâs arms. Â
âI believe it has âgone to sleepâ, yes. Â But it doesnât bother me.â
âMan, that is gonna tingle so badly when we get up.â Â
Cas makes a low noise of assent. Â âYes, that is likely.â
Kevin huffs out a small laugh. Â âDo you want me to move?â
âNot particularly. Â But if youâre hungry, I believe Dean is making waffles.â Â
So thatâs what Dean had been whispering to Cas about. Â Kevin can feel his face flushing at what kind of picture they must have made for Dean to stumble upon, sleeping overnight on the couch in the library together. Â But he feels relieved that Dean must not have been too scandalized, having retreated back to the kitchen with a wave of Casâs hand.
Kevin makes a noncommittal noise, and doesnât move.
It must be afternoon by the time they finally untangle themselves and sit up on the couch. Â Kevin immediately feels the need to hold onto Castiel and never let go again, and he barely catches himself from reaching out to grab onto Casâs hand, or sleeve, or just any part of him. Â Something to remind him that heâs not alone, that he doesnât have to be alone. Â Maybe heâs earned that right. Â To be selfish for once. Â Before he can reach out though, Cas is already closing the distance to grasp his hand firmly, before tugging him up off the couch. Â
âYou need to eat,â Cas explains. Â He folds Kevin into one last hug, never letting go of Kevinâs hand. Â Kevin whines into Casâs shoulder, and Cas chuckles. Â âIâm here for you, Kevin. Â Anything you need, just ask.â Â
Kevin smiles up at him, and for the first time since he was cursed with being a goddamn prophet, he feels like maybe heâs going to be okay.
Okay so Iâve realized that Iâm the biggest sucker for Kevin having this huge crush on Cas who doesnât realize it at all. Like, Kevin doing all these little things with or for him, listening to his stories, talking about history, introducing him to new things, and basically being a super sweet friend. Everyone can see Kevinâs got it bad, but they donât know how to break it to him that Cas already has his eyes on someone else.Â

13 Days of Halloween Challenge, Day 5: Spiders or Black Cats.
Cas looked behind himself for the umpteenth time. Â The cat was still there. Â It had been following him for the last two miles of his walk, and he was just around the corner from the bunker. Â It was keeping a safe distance, but it looked friendly enough. Â If it were something supernatural, like a witchâs familiar, though, the last thing Cas wanted to do would be to lead it back to the bunker.
He crouched down and held out his hand toward the cat in invitation. Â The cat approached tentatively. Â He sniffed Casâ hand curiously, then rubbed his cheek against Casâ palm. Â Cas carefully picked the cat up, holding him out at armâs length, and squinted at him curiously--examining him closely. Â The cat just blinked at him and made a small plaintive noise. Â
âIâm sorry, little guy, just had to make sure you werenât evil is all,â Cas said, trying to keep his voice soft and calming, pulling the cat in to cradle on his lap. Â He pulled out his cell phone.
âHello, Dean,â Cas said, when he heard it pick up.
âHey, Cas, whatâs up?â
âThere has been a black cat following me for a couple miles. Â I donât detect anything supernatural, and it doesnât seem to have a collar on it.â
There was a lengthy pause on the other end before Dean huffed out a sigh.
âI suppose Kevinâs been wanting a cat, has he?â Dean asked, mostly rhetorically.
âHe may have mentioned. Â But I assure you, this was a coincidence.â Â Cas could practically hear Deanâs eye roll through the line.
âAlright, bring it home. Â But if I end up a sneezing watery-eyed mess Iâm blaming you.â Â Dean hung up before Cas could thank him. Â
âWell, little one? Â Would you like to keep walking or shall I carry you the rest of the way?â Â The cat squirmed a little and made to jump to the ground. Â âAlright then, follow me.â
When they got to the bunker, Cas once again scooped the cat up into his arms. Â He wanted to introduce it to Kevin before it got to roaming about the place.
âI wonder what Kevin will want to name you,â Cas murmured thoughtfully as he headed toward the library. Â He poked his head in but it seemed Kevin wasnât there. Â As he stepped out into the hallway he nearly collided with Sam. Â Samâs eyes lit up when he saw the little furball Cas carried.
âHello, Sam,â Cas said with a smile. Â âIâd introduce him, but he doesnât have a name yet.â
Sam reached out a hand but waited until Cas nodded before he began petting the cat. Â
âAw what a soft little guy you are,â Sam cooed. Â âKevin will love you.â Â
âI hope so,â Cas agreed. Â âAny idea where he is?â
âI think he went to lay down. Â Translating was giving him a headache.â
âThank you,â Cas said, and headed toward the room he and Kevin shared. Â
He entered quietly. Â The lamp on Kevinâs nightstand was lit but Kevin was curled up on his side facing away from the door so Cas tread carefully. Â When he rounded the end of the bed, Kevin opened one eye sleepily.
âCas?â
âHello, Kevin. Â Did I wake you?â Cas asked quietly. Â
Kevin made a noise which Cas thought was a denial before rolling on his back.
âSit, sit,â Kevin said, patting the bed. Â Both eyes finally opening and focusing on Cas. Â âWait, is that a cat?â Â
Kevin bolted upright and Cas sat carefully on the edge of the bed, setting the cat down in the space between them. Â
âHe followed me home,â Cas explained. Â âHe doesnât have any tags, so I think heâs a stray, but we can always check him for a microchip at the veterinarian. Â I was thinking you could name him.â
Kevin held his hand out to the cat, and scritched behind its ears. Â The cat purred beautifully. Â Kevin beamed up at Cas. Â
âYâknow, in Chinese culture, black cats are an omen of poverty and famine,â Kevin said conversationally, pulling the cat into his lap and running his hand along his flank. Â The cat sprawled out luxuriously, already seeming at home. Â Cas furrowed his brow.
âIs that- Do you- Is it okay if we keep it? Â Do you not want a black cat?â Cas asked, concern tinging his tone. Â Kevin just laughed lightly.
âCas, I think we passed poverty a while ago. Â If you havenât noticed neither of us even has a home. Â I donât think this cat can hurt us any in that department.â Â Kevin meant it to be a joke but Casâ frown deepened.
âAre you unhappy here, Kevin?â
âItâs not exactly where I saw my life heading.â
âBut are you unhappy?â
Kevin smiled. Â âMy beautiful, strong, thoughtful ex-angel boyfriend just brought me home a cat. Â I donât care that Iâm never going to be the first Asian-American president. Â Well. Â I care a little. Â But I love you, and the life weâve built here, more.â Â
As if sensing the moment, the cat stood and stretched, moving to lay on the other side of the bed. Â Cas surged forward to kiss Kevin. Â He wrapped an arm around Kevinâs back pressing them flush together and Kevin moaned, breaking the kiss with a gasp.
âWhat was that for?â
âI love you.â Â Casâ voice was deep with emotion. Â
âI love you, too.â Â
Cas laid down next to Kevin then, pulling him close.
Castiel woke with a yawn, rolling over on to his side and wincing. His ribs still hurt from the hunt several days ago. A whole nest of eight vampires taken out by him, Sam, Dean and Kevin. It had been a good hunt. No matter how long he was human though, he didnât think he could get used to the jolt of waking up with an aching, battered body.
Normally, Castiel loved mornings. Kevin was as much of a morning person as he was. That is to say, not at all. Kevin usually burrowed deeper in to the sheets at the first shift of the mattress when Castiel woke up. But sleepy good morning kisses and heavy hands and shared heat under the blanket, Castiel liked these things.
Kevinâs side of the bed was empty. Patting the sheets, Castiel found them cold. Had he not just gone for a bathroom break? Scrunching up his nose, also painfully tender, Castiel moaned and burrowed in to the blankets. He didnât want to get up.
The older Dean got, the more time they took in between hunts. It should at least be another week, maybe two, before they started to itch for a fight again. Not that Castiel resented the work. It was important work, it was good to help others, it was necessary and it gave him a sense of purpose. But it hurt.
Stretching out on his back, Castiel pushed the sheets down to his waist. Torso bare, tattoos to hide him, to protect him, to keep him whole, were stark black lines and whorls across his chest. There was a smattering of impressive scars he was starting to collect too. His entire right side was purple and yellow at the moment. Sometimes, when he was still enough to float out of himself, he thought it was kind of pretty. But that should be morbid.
Scratching his belly, he was ready to get up and hunt for Kevin in the labyrinth of the bunker - probably in the library or kitchen - when he heard scuffling outside the bedroom door. It swung open and Kevin padded quietly in. Rumpled hair, a bandage wrapped around one arm, pale blue boxers and a baggy gray shirt, he came across the room carrying a tray.
Scooting up the bed to sit against the headboard, Castiel watched curiously.
Kevin settled gingerly on the bed, careful with the tray, and Castiel helped steady it for him. There were two steaming glasses of coffee, two glasses of orange juice, a bowl of fresh chopped fruit, and one plate mounded high with fluffy pancakes dripping melted butter.
âKevin, whatâs this?â
Kevin smiled at him, leaning over to peck him on the cheeks.
âHappy birthday.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, I donât know if angels really have birthdays, but itâs been a year since youâve been human.â
Castiel scrunched up his nose, thinking. âHas it?â
âOkay, maybe not precisely, but itâs been a year since you showed up at the bunker.â
âOh.â
Castiel looked at the food, tray sitting on his lap, looked to Kevin, leaning against the headboard next to him with that curious smile on his face that Castiel could never quite decipher.
âItâs been a year already?â
âYep. Guess we can call it your birthday and our anniversary all in one and make it easy. Thatâs pretty convenient for me.â
Castiel was getting good at being human, he thought. Yet the sheer swell and intensity of unrestrained emotions still managed to bow him sometimes. For as much smaller perspective and power he had, everything seemed much larger.
Holding the tray with one hand so it wouldnât spill, Castiel reached his arm in the middle to loop around Kevinâs shoulders and pull him closer. Kevin sighed happily and kissed easily.
Kevin had been there, filling in as a stagehand as jobs got shuffled around  - with Gadreel gone tonight Cas knew it would likely be the same Dean was watching Cas out of the corner of his eye, pretending to pay attention to his make-up. Knowing Kevin would be in charge of his Act 2 quick change and that they would no longer be able to pointedly ignore each other made it hard enough to button his shirt with steady hands.
Cas floated through the next two days of performances. The familiar music floated through his head and his body moved automatically, as it was trained to do. Samandriel went home sick yesterday and Gadreel hadnât been seen all day. No one had said much more than a perfunctory hello, even Dean, though he had also brought coffee, so there was that gesture. When Cas went on stage for sound check he found himself doing it in the dark. He squinted, hissing in pain and making the speakers crackle when they turned back on, bright as they were during performances before he got offstage.
