A Night with Mr. Toad
Ken Middleham USA, 1961
Phase IV (1974)
Enjoyable but disappointing killer-ant science fiction horror/fantasy from the brilliant Saul Bass (more famous for his animations and title sequence designs - particularly Psycho and Vertigo). Â
Some very stylish images, but the acting and script mean that the most interesting sections are the macro-lens work involving the insects themselves... which were actually shot by wildlife photographer Ken Middleham. Â
Maybe a second viewing will be less disappointing now I won’t have my hopes built up by the Director’s name.
I heard about this band because I was looking for guitar music with a very specific idea in mind. This song has 86 youtube views last I checked, so I am going to take the liberty of linking to the original as well:Â

This image is from The Secret Life of 118 Green Street, featuring Ken Middleham footage, which I always recommend whenever I’m given the opportunity.Â

This Land Presents: Thomas Shahan (by THIS LAND PRESS) At about 03:10, Shahan shows off his backward-lens setup that he uses for photographing jumping spiders, that sounds very similar to the lens setup that Ken Middleham used for photographing ants for Phase IV (see [Episode 003 of The Optical](http://opticalpodcast.com/episode_003)). Special thanks to listener Chris Galegar for the link!
Filming the Invisible, showing the nature photography of Ken Middleham, Cinematographer, who also shot all of the ant photography for the Saul Bass film *Phase IV,* featured in our next episode of The Optical podcast, coming tomorrow.
Ken Middleham's handiwork in Days of Heaven. Devastating.
