Part 1;

Such a feeling was rare, and completely foreign to the priest. They were the little moments in life when he wanted for nothing at all. A lightness with each breath that left him feeling drunk with the sensation of weightlessness. Fleeting as they were, he lived for those moments. Didn’t everyone? There were a few things that could make him feel truly content.

Being needed. Mahy didn’t need to be told that he was useful, he knew that already. He could do a great many things to aid those he worked with, lived with, even slept with. But none of those were when he felt needed. Needed was holding someone through a bout of night terrors or waves of fevers and sickness. It was healing a would-be mortal wound, or giving kisses to soothe hurt feelings. To put it simply, to be needed was to be irreplaceable to someone else.

Praise. Though he didn’t need to be told what he’d done was good, or that he’d done it well, it certainly didn’t hurt. Sometimes this went hand in hand with the above, because there was nothing better than receiving praise in response to providing a service that wasn’t readily available elsewhere. Something that only he could give, or at least that was appreciated greatly. Everyone wanted to feel appreciated, didn’t they?

Security. Confidence he had in regards to his skills, his knowledge, and his body. Security often came alongside little bouts of confidence which relied on many factors. Sometimes it came with being protected, while other times it was being told directly that he was something special. That he had a place, a home, he was wanted. Carrying permanent marks of lovers on his body wasn’t something he did lightly. He knew all too well that bliss could be upended in the blink of an eye, and insecurity often had an ugly and violent fallout. That was why security was possibly the most important of the factors in being truly content. He could do without praise, and he could even accept that he wasn’t needed at times. They paled in comparison to the feeling of security that was so hard to find.

There’s a beach far south on Kalimdor that he loves. Like as south as you can get. It’s a flight away from several places that he enjoys, and it’s relaxing and solitary. He likes to camp there when things get too heavy and he doesn’t want to be found easily. Watching the ocean as the sun rises and falls gives that sense of smallness that can be comforting to someone who feels that their problems are bigger than them.

Mahy licked his quill, tasting ink and pricking his tongue. Flinching, he pulled it free. His eyes lifted as the wet letters slowly lost their sheen, ink settling into the paper in the dry heat. The sun was setting, the sky alight with shifting colors all reflected on the ocean. The sound of the waves rushed over him, the drugs in his system making it possible to feel the sensation of it. His lips curled into a slight smile, closing his eyes and letting the feeling overwhelm him for a while.

By the time he opened them again, the light was gone. With a heavy sigh, he folded up his letter. Standing up, he brushed the sand from his pants. Finally he slid the letter into an envelope, Keirik Trueaim written in calligraphy on the cover. Tucking it into his bag, he headed back towards the town to find a portal. He intended to deliver the letter to Nulia, the only one he trusted never to read it. He had no way of knowing what the next day, week, or month could bring. He couldn’t go without leaving something behind. It was the first of several letters he was writing, but this one had to come first.

“To be honest Iwasn’t really sure what the hell to think. Last time I saw that face adifferent asshole was wearing it.” (There was a bit of a confused androcky start to this relationship, that’s for sure. To top it off Keirik said afew things to him that really grated and rubbed him wrong at first.)

“He’s alright. Gothis fucking rough edges but I can’t exactly complain about that. He’s good.”(Keirik’s been a good friend to him so far. Been reliable in some situationsand he knows that there’s at least the one thing they completely agree on andthat’s not a bad basis for a friendship. As he’s gotten used to Keirik’s humorhe finds the rogue rather fun to tease with now and then too.)

“I really likehim. I think we get along good. I see why Kieros is so damn fond of him.”(Kieryl is slow to make friends, but Keirik is perhaps one of his very bestones at the moment.)

“He doesn’t reallyneed to know every fucking thing about who I was and am. But it isn’t likethere’s some secret I’m deliberately keeping or anything like that.”(Details mainly. Kieryl plays a lot of things about himself close to the vest,it’s his way. He’s not hiding any specific secret from Keirik but there areseveral things he’s not necessarily likely to tell him without some good reasoneither.)

Something they wishthey could to tell your muse:

“I guess I’d tellhim he’s a fucking good friend and he matters to me? But pretty damn sure healready knows that.” (For the most part Kieryl’s not one to try and bitehis tongue on things he wants to say. Might be a few other things he’d say toKeirik if they were really drunk and seriously talking but for the most parthe’s said what he wanted to say to him. Keirik doesn’t seem to expect him tomince words either and he appreciates that.)

“Uneasy allies, Isuppose. I trust in his loyalty to Thorn even if I trust nothing else abouthim.” (He’s afraid of Oriole. He doesn’t trust him and he feels verycertain that given half a chance without worry of the consequences thespellbreaker would hurt him.)

“His loyalty toThorn is the only thing I can think of.” (Self-explanatory)

“A great deal. He hurts people.He takes great delight in hurting people. I dislike the way he smiles at me sometimes.”(Vaelanys is very aware of just what Oriole is.)

“I had someconfusion at the time as to who Oriole was. But I vaguely remember beingconfused and mildly uneasy.” (That was really such a confusing time forVaelanys his impressions of Oriole and Keirik were sort of blurred together andblended for a while.)

Their impression ofyour muse now:

“He has notimproved with greater acquaintance.” (The more Vaelanys comes to know ofOriole the more deeply uneasy the man makes him. He knows Thorn is fond of him,but to him Oriole feels very much like a dangerous beast on a small leash.)

“I am notfond.” (He really doesn’t like Oriole. Of all Thorn’s birds Oriole islikely his least favorite. But on the other hand he seems to be one of the mostreliably loyal to Thorn so at times they have worked together in a way thatsurprises him for Thorn’s sake.)

“I hope he is notaware just how uneasy he makes me.” (Vaelanys is not sure he’s managed toconceal that as well as he likes honestly. but he tries. He’d really ratherOriole didn’t smell his fear so to speak.)
