I kind of wanted to write this story in the Madison Scouts prospective Contras Facebook group, but I didn't think I'd have the space.
Waaaaaaaaay back in July 2012, I saw the Scouts for the first time at Cavalcade of Brass in Lisle Illinois, the Cavaliers' home show. At that time, I was just getting into drum corps. I didn't know much about it, other than some random videos on YouTube, and that I knew I wanted to do it someday. Scratch that. I knew a bunch about it. At least I thought I did. I knew what was on the Internet. Which, because you holding up is a distorted view of it, If you ask anybody who's ever marched. I've been following the scores all season, the show was less then A week after teal sound folder, As well as the racing scouts. They were both supposed to be at that show. That was also the first time I saw the Cadets, The Cavaliers, Pioneer, and Spirit of Atlanta, if I remember correctly. My two favorites were the Cavaliers and the Madison Scouts. At that time, I dreamt of being the cavalier, Because they were so close to home, and their spring training and home show is 3 miles away from my house. (I almost filled a spot this year) Looking back, 15 Minutes of Fame was not the best show, but it was very entertaining to the novice drum corps fan. I met a woman at show really inspired me. We talked for a while in the stands, and she told me to do it. She told me I should audition, even if I didn't think I was good enough. She made me want to march.
Fast forward all the way to prelims night 2013. I was in the theater watching the shows just like many of you who were not on the field that right we're doing. I went by myself, but there were quite a few others in the theatre, and I thought I sat next to an older man, maybe news mid-to-late 50s. I thought nothing of it. As the night progressed, Will more and more standing ovation from the theater, until we got to the Madison Scouts show. When the corps started singing on the field, everybody stood up, just to listen and pay respect. The man next to me was singing You'll Never Walk Alone as tears rolled down his face. And then hit me like a ton of bricks. this man was a Madison Scout and even after all these years, the experience meant so much to him. And in that second, I knew I wanted in. All the while, I was texting with Chris Stansbury about each show. We both really like the Boston Crusaders and Madison Scouts. I, being the cocky sonofabitch I am, said, in the moment, that I would be auditioning for the scouts seriously, instead of what is going to do, which was do the video audition to get feedback about what I could do better to get into a different corps, because I was not confident my skills.
The next few months cool give me delete lots and lots of research about all the different corps, including the Madison Scouts. I decided that I would audition for the Boston Crusaders, because there auditions are about an hour away from where I go to college. I was still playing around with the idea of doing Madison's video audition. That is, until, I found Turner Hawkins in the Madison Scouts tag, when he was just starting out on tumblr. It was right after I had moved into my dorm, the week before school started when I had the entire place to myself. I bombarded him with questions about the audition process and stuff, and he really helped me decide that this was what I wanted.Β
Fast forward to now, 12 days before my video audition. I would not be where I am right now without the lady at the show last July, the guy at prelims in the theater, Chris Stansbury, or Turner Hawkins.
If you guys are reading this right now, I would like to say thank you. Even if I don't get a contract, this whole experience has made me grow as musician and as a person. Thanks and thanks again,
P.S. I'm sorry if there're any grammar errors were anything like that, I'm using dictation on my computer, sometimes it does not understand everything I am saying. I did my best to edit, but you must remember, it's past midnight.
