Having moved to England at the age of 8 from Australia, I had no idea what football was. My first day in my new neighbourhood, I went out to meet the local lads who were playing football on a small strip of green outside my new home.

I hadn’t seen or heard of football prior to this, having played a lot of cricket and ‘Ozzy rules football’ back in Australia. The lads got me involved by quickly explaining the rules, putting me on one of the teams and informing me my first responsibility was to defend a corner as a defender. As the plastic air floater was whipped in towards my head I shut my eyes and attacked the ball, I made a good contact with the ball and instantly felt a sense of satisfaction. This feeling suddenly transformed to anguish as I realised my first touch in English football was a bullet header own goal. From that moment on, I was a goalkeeper.

I was very raw and had to learn quickly by watching and imitating my heroes, David Seaman, Gianluca Pagliuca of Inter Milan, Oliver Kahn of Bayern Munich and Ian Chatfield of Crawley Town, in who were then playing in the Beazer Homes League, my home town team  who I went to watch on a regular basis. I was playing for a local team, the school and local representative sides, but it wasn’t until the age of 13 where I was scouted by Brighton & Hove Albion FC and signed for their Schoolboy Academy that I first received specialist goalkeeper training.

For the next 3 years, every Monday night for a couple of hours I was put through my paces with some high quality goalkeeper training, however, looking back I wish I had the opportunity to do more to perfect my trade as I now realise that practice and training are vital to a goalkeeper’s development.
