if you need to hear it...
there’s this idea in art communities and professions that you are what you create but i just want to stress that your identity as a person is and will always be separate from your creations (or lack thereof). the quality of your art does not equate to the quality of your character or your worthiness to create as an artist.
it’s so hard to get out of the mindset of needing to prove to yourself and others, specifically family members (as capitalism doesn’t reward creatives) that you have a right to be doing what you’re doing, and if you’re not good at it then you should give it up. whether it be painting, drawing, writing, filmmaking, dance, theatre, design, whatever....this is not true!!!! we’re all learning our crafts and we will never get to where we wish to be if we don’t spend a large portion of our time being less than perfect. as kids we’re taught that inherent talent gives us permission to pursues these things but that’s not true!! art is a craft that requires practice but you can’t practice if you’re constantly equating the product of your efforts to your self worth. it’s not healthy and it’s no way to sustain a life. i’m sick and tired of hating myself because i hate my work, or critiquing myself because i critique my work. the two are separate!
stop attaching your identity to the things you create, stop measuring your worth in the quality of your art, stop comparing your progress to that of others leading different lives than yours. art is permission to make mistakes. your worth remains even when your work suffers, and having the courage to create in the first place is enough of an accomplishment to justify your existence as an artist!!!! that is all thanks for coming to my ted talk
