Lucy and Kendall have been friends for years, and while Lucy doesn't have any siblings, she's close enough with the Knights that they're kind of her family too. Mr. Knight is killed in the mines when Kendall is thirteen and Lucy is eleven, and Lucy's father dies in the same explosion. Her mom follows soon after, and Mrs. Knight, trying her best while still growing distant at times, takes Lucy in instead of allowing her to end up in the group home. Katie is 12 the year Lucy is 16 and Kendall is 18, and when Katie is reaped, Kendall freaks out and looks to Lucy in the square in panic, just scared, not asking anything of her, and then Lucy volunteers, freaking out Kendall even more. Katie wasn't Lucy's sister, but she was the closest thing she had to one, and it was the least she could do after everything the Knights had done for her all these years.

Kevin is reaped, he's also 16, but he tells himself that at least it was him instead of his brothers. He isn't sure whether he'd have the guts to do what Lucy did. Though they have both their parents, Kevin still became more responsible given the circumstances. He has brothers to watch out for, after all. He'd had a crush on Lucy at school, but she never noticed it until he mentions it right before the games.

James is a career tribute, along with the jennifers, who form their clique once in the Capitol, and Jett, egos as big as the moon, all of them. Some last longer than others. Macy is just behind the careers. She's one of the last ones standing, but she doesn't win. Logan and Carlos are not careers. Carlos lasts longer, but Logan has decent survival skills and holds out longer than anyone thinks he will.

Jo is the daughter of the mayor of district 12. Stella is one of the youngest stylists the Capitol has ever had. She's Kevin's stylist. Lucy meets Kiara in the arena. Same sass and big brown eyes as Katie. Worse luck. They form an alliance until Lucy is too late to save her.

Vzala jsem si ji, když mě po celym týdnu, co jsme se nemohli vidět, vyzvedával po práci, ale záměrně jsem mu nic neřekla. Autem zaparkoval tak, aby nás nikdo neviděl a já si na něj konečně přesedla.

Mazlil se s mejma prsama a hlasitě u toho vydechoval. Svlíkla jsem si hořejšek a T. mi stáhl ramínka od šatů. Zrovna jsem na sobě neměla podprsenku, a to se mu šíleně líbilo. Pořád s úsměvem opakoval, že jsem moc zlobivá a za to mi s chutí propleskával kozy. Mačkal je a špičkou jazyka mi pečlivě lízal bradavky, aby mě mohl pozorovat, jak nadrženě přivírám oči. Občas mě přiškrtil oběma rukama, a pak mi přejížděl po břiše až ke kundě. Prstama se opíral o moje břicho a palcem mě dráždil přes kalhotky. Obličejem se otíral o moje kozy a ruce mi nasměroval tak, abych ho mohla držet kolem krku a hlavy.

Vzrušeně jsem mu jezdila zadkem po rozkroku, dokud jsem na stehnech neucítila jeho tvrdnoucí péro. T. mi mezitím přejížděl rukama po pasu, bocích a zadku. Občas mě přes něj poplácal nebo ho nadrženě promačkával. Chytla jsem ho za ruku a strčila jí do kalhotek, kde jsem pro něj schovávala to malý překvapení.

Když ho ucítil, zhluboka se nadechl a usmál se. Rychle mi stáhnul punčochy i s kalhotkama a vyhrnul mi šaty nad boky. Prstama ho pomalu zatlačoval hlouběji a nakonec ho vzal do ruky a krouživym pohybem vytahoval ven. Střídal ho se svejma nasliněnejma prstama a neustále mě chválil a říkal, že jsem jeho hodná holčička. Po chvilce ho do mě vrážel čím dál surověji, aby mě donutil hlasitěji vzdychat.
