King of High School, Ep 1
I am probably too excited for this drama, simply because it has all the elements I adore.
Like most RomComs it starts out with exaggerated characters, and it took me a long time to get used to this aspect of RomComs. I initially quitĀ some of my favorites simply because of the first couple episodes were so overboard. But, what I've discovered is that they do this on purpose to get the viewers invested in the characters because no one cares if someone's fallen in love if they don't care about the people in the first place.
So what we learn about the mains is this:
Lee Min Suk is arrogant, brash, prone to outbursts of anger. He loves his family due to some severe abandonment issues. He's a good person if not overly bright and terribly immature.
Jung Soo Young also a smidge immature, and also quite brazen. She's absolutely not afraid to ask for what she wants, which is refreshing for the mousy office female lead. Also, she is a pro-drunk dialer.
Yoo Jin Woo is cardboard. Good looking cardboard. But he checks off all the second lead office drama characteristics: chaebol or birth-secret, unrepentant jerk, overly capable, smart. I hope they give him a bit more to do after we establish our primary couple.
Lots to play with from the character switch, to the birth secrets, to the abandonment issues, to the missing hyung, so here's to hoping we can skip the episode 12 doldrums and run straight through to the end!
Sidenote: This is my first kdrama.com drama (because i didn't know they had Gapdong!!!), and I am loving the way they handle certain Korean terminology like Oppa and Ajusshi, instead of using the name (which I hate) or translating it (which I hate MORE), or translating it in the subtitles (which is really hard to read that fast as a newbie) they define it in the overtitles. This means as a pro I get to move along, but as a newbie you can actually learn the terms. So one point for kdrama.com. The fact that I'm watching it on Wednesday instead of Monday makes me likely to stick with Viki as my primary for a while (did I mention I'm an addict?), but they're new so we'll see what they can manage.
